This session will look at how we can use digital technology to democratise access to archaeological and museum collections, as well as increase public awareness and knowledge of these collections using innovative tools such as 3D modelling and AR/VR experiences.
Extending the University 'community': Integrating Research, Learning and Comm...David McGillivray
In this seminar I explore the challenges facing universities when trying to live up to their commitments towards community engagement and the transformation of the social, cultural and economic environment in the regions they serve. I focus on how the University needs to extend beyond the confines of its campuses and the importance of the curriculum being adaptable to respond to external drivers. I draw on two participatory arts and media projects that I led on behalf of UWS to highlight the opportunities and threats that exist when the University takes its research and learning activities outside the lecture theatre or seminar room - physically and virtually. I will stress that whilst universities rightly focus on the delivery of formal, accredited learning they can also make a significant contribution to their constituencies through the realm of informal learning and the production (and circulation) of open educational resources. I will talk about two externally funded practice-research projects that included significant internal stakeholder involvement across UWS. The first of these is citizenrelay, a project that made an impact on the practices of the University by recruiting students as producers of content, providing them with opportunities for volunteering and other paid employment and that brought about discussion of curriculum changes as a result. Second, I will focus on an ongoing project, Digital Commonwealth, which takes UWS staff and students outside the boundaries of their traditional practice by working with community groups and organisations in the regions around our four campuses and beyond to deliver formal and informal learning in the fields of creative practice (songwriting, filmmaking, creative writing), journalism and community development.

FryskLab is an initiative of Library Service Friesland (Bibliotheekservice Fryslân, BSF) and the Frisian public library network. Friesland is a rural province in the northern part of the Netherlands and FryskLab, operating from a truck formerly used as a bookmobile, is Europe’s first official library FabLab, or “fabrication laboratory”. Its varied team consists of IT specialists, arts management professionals and librarians, and its goal is to examine the extent to which this mobile FabLab initiative contributes to the development of creative, technical and entrepreneurial skills of children and young adults. The project is ultimately expected to result in an increase of the innovative capacities of the entire province of Friesland.
Officially launched in 2014, FryskLab has so far received a number of awards, including the American Library Association’s (ALA) 2017 Presidential Citations for Innovative International Library Projects award. Making knowledge and sharing the future, the motto of the FryskLab project, reinforces the role of libraries in facilitating access to various “tools of knowledge” (equipment and technology) and providing support in the form of various educational and training programmes, effectively bringing together physical and digital, traditional and modern means of acquiring knowledge.

In this presentation I will briefly present the structure of the public library network in the Netherlands, with particular emphasis on the way public library innovation is “organised”. There is currently a community of practice (CoP) organised for every specific area of library innovation which at the same time also addresses officially established national priorities, i.e. lifelong learning, development of traditional library services, education of the young population, etc. Librarians in each of the CoPs share experiences specific to their field based on which they identify future activities aimed at the development of the particular field. Librarians included in this CoP system come from libraries of all types and sizes regardless of the province or region.

What is SIGGRAPH NEXT?

What will be the next big thing at SIGGRAPH, and how can the SIGGRAPH community contribute in an impactful way to fields outside of traditional computer graphics? SIGGRAPH NEXT at SIGGRAPH 2015 explored these questions. In this new addition to the SIGGRAPH program, an eclectic set of speakers gave TED-style talks and posed grand challenges to the SIGGRAPH community. In this blog post, Professor Ramesh Raskar of the MIT Media Lab introduces SIGGRAPH NEXT and outlines his vision for it.
What will be the next big thing at SIGGRAPH?
The SIGGRAPH community has a set of hammers that it uses to solve problems: geometry processing, rendering, animation, and imaging. What will be the next hammer, the next major field of study, appear at SIGGRAPH? Let’s examine where our research ideas come from. Often, advances in machine learning, optimization, signal processing, and optics forge our hammers. Our selection of hammer also depends on the nails we see. The most common application areas of computer graphics currently include computer-aided design, movies, games, and photography.
We often ask: “Does this work contribute to SIGGRAPH techniques?”
We should also ask, “Does this work contribute SIGGRAPH techniques to _____?”
When we answer the challenges posed by these traditional application areas of computer graphics, we are “drinking our own champagne.” We have made amazing progress in these application areas, and we should celebrate! SIGGRAPH NEXT is about finding new varieties of champagne; for that, we need new varieties of grapes. We should invite others from nontraditional and emerging application areas to enjoy our champagne with us, and they will become part of our community. First, we can expand our work in existing areas like mobile, user interaction, virtual reality, fabrication, and new types of cameras. We can also expand into emerging areas such as healthcare, energy, education, entrepreneurship, materials, tissue fabrication, and social media. What’s next?
Professor Raskar highlights three top areas where we can make an impact. One big take-home message is that many of these applications involve biology: bio is the new digital, and it will affect us ubiquitously.
The future of technology in peacebuilding: Presentation at MIT Media LabSanjana Hattotuwa
In early April this year, I was invited to deliver a keynote address at the inaugural Build Peace conference, held at MIT Media Lab. My presentation was given, almost to the day, twenty years after the Rwandan genocide. Just before I went on stage, we all observed a minute's silence to remember the victims.
The genocide wasn't on my mind when I made the slides for the presentation, but brought into sharp focus the thrust of my submission, which was to look ten to fifteen years into the future, and how information and communications technologies (ICTs) would feature in both the genesis and inflammation of complex political emergencies (CPEs) - in other words, violent conflict - as well as aid in peacebuilding and conflict transformation.

Our view was that inclusion in learning needs to be interest-based not curriculum-based, and that people would work how to develop their communities socially rather than themselves personally.

Knowledge Sharing for Social Innovation: The Dutch Tilburg Regional CaseCommunitySense
Social innovation as a process is about multiple stakeholders working together on joint, economically and socially sustainable solutions for wicked societal problems. Social innovation both co-creates value for individual stakeholders involved, and contributes to the common good. It has been an important theme in the the Dutch city of Tilburg and the surrounding region of Midden-Brabant for years. A successful regional social innovation ecosystem exists. Knowledge sharing about the innovations remains a bottleneck, however. Two initiatives to increase regional social innovation knowledge sharing capacity are presented: the social innovation storytelling architecture and the Tilburg public library prototype KnowledgeCloud for catalyzing knowledge sharing across regional themes of interest.

The “eScouts: Intergenerational circle for community service” project is a complex, multidimensional and comprehensive initiative aiming to develop an exchange of innovative intergenerational learning experiences between people older than 55 years old and young volunteers in six European Member State (Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the UK).
eScouts is aimed to develop an innovative intergenerational learning exchange between senior adults and youth volunteers in the context of non-formal education. It is centred on the development of the digital competences of the eldest and on the guidance to the youngest to better face their upcoming adult life challenges.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

be a completely "green" building, both in design, building and implementation as a community
