What is the crisis?
Is it that:
Youth are politically disengaged?
Or
New forms of political engagement are emerging that
threaten the status quo?
Are we asking the right questions in trying to diagnose
the issue?
Some challenges
for the future
•Minimise the short-termism of the 4 year election cycle.
•Future generations as a represented constituency (Krznaric, 2019).
Need for long-term political commitments:
•Direct democracy
•Electronic voting
Participatory democracy:
•Of what are we citizens (online societies, inter-/transnational
societies)?
•Who is eligible for citizenship (AI, robots)?
•What rights & obligations do citizenship entail?
•Is citizenship always total or can we be partial citizens?
Evolving notions of citizenship:
•Simulated realities
•Maker cultures & societies (hacktivism 2.0)
New forms of political engagement:
CREATIVITY LIBERAL ARTS CRITICAL THINKING COLLABORATION AND TEACH ABOUT
THE FUTURE!

  • 5. Youth and politics “Participation in political activities is in crisis, especially when it comes to young people, and this is a major issue facing contemporary democracies.” Kitanova, 2019
  • 6. The “crisis” in brief: • Declining participation in elections • Declining participation in political organizations • Declining trust in government institutions (Harvard University Institute of Politics)
  • 7. Yet… Arab Spring Free the Nipple Me Too movement Greta Thunberg March for our Lives SlutWalk Extinction Rebellion (or what Boris Johnson referred to as the “uncooperative crusties”) Movements initiated by and/or led by young people and all largely involving online communities.
  • 8. What is the crisis? Is it that: Youth are politically disengaged? Or New forms of political engagement are emerging that threaten the status quo? Are we asking the right questions in trying to diagnose the issue?
  • 9. Some challenges for the future •Minimise the short-termism of the 4 year election cycle. •Future generations as a represented constituency (Krznaric, 2019). Need for long-term political commitments: •Direct democracy •Electronic voting Participatory democracy: •Of what are we citizens (online societies, inter-/transnational societies)? •Who is eligible for citizenship (AI, robots)? •What rights & obligations do citizenship entail? •Is citizenship always total or can we be partial citizens? Evolving notions of citizenship: •Simulated realities •Maker cultures & societies (hacktivism 2.0) New forms of political engagement:
