The circulatory system consists of the heart, blood, and blood vessels. The heart pumps blood continuously through arteries, veins, and capillaries. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to tissues, while veins return oxygen-poor blood back to the heart. Capillaries allow for the exchange of oxygen, food, waste, and carbon dioxide between blood and cells. Heart rate increases during exercise and fever to pump more blood and regulate body temperature.
