Maintenance of street assets is a critical activity for local authorities. Publishing real-time maintenance schedules on these assets will provide the public with greater transparency and higher service standards. The “My Work” application, developed on the Esri platform, provides an infrastructure that allows the council to capture asset data quickly and efficiently on tablet devices. The status of maintenance jobs is updated and reported live to the council website. To deliver operational efficiency, My Work also delivers a Web-based monitoring tool to aid the management of these assets, which provides performance information and drives resource planning. Historical data will be available to allow staff to suggest working practice improvements.

English Heritage - Asessing the risk of flooding with GISEsri UK
English Heritage is guardian to many of the most important archaeological and historic sites in the country. With just over 420 individual properties in its care ranging from prehistoric stone circles to a cold-war bunker, English Heritage needed a clear assessment of the threat flooding and erosion poses to its estate, recognising that the risks may be increasing in severity due to climate change. Coastal properties were assessed in 2011 and now work has just been completed assessing the risk flooding and erosion poses to the inland estate of some 360 properties. The challenge was to use GIS to assess the risk posed to each property from flooding using data supplied by the Environment Agency and then to prepare a report presenting the evidence for use by managers. The predicted impact on each estate was presented in tabular format using data derived from the project GIS along with more detailed assessments of 60 estates found to be at highest risk. The report concluded with an overall summary of the exposure of the English Heritage Estate to flood risk and put forward suggestions for future work to inform discussions between English Heritage, the Environment Agency and Local Authorities.

In the UK there are hundreds of wind farm applications made every year. This data is recorded and provided free of charge by Renewables UK and DECC. There are thousands of applications listed in these databases. Some of the proposed turbines in these applications will interfere with radar due to their height and location, many will not. In order to assess where to focus our efforts we need to identify where these are, on what scale the developments, which radars they are likely to interfere with and at what stage of planning they are at.
When these developments have been identified, we need to establish the best location to position our 3D radar so we can successfully mitigate the effects of wind turbines on surrounding radars.

Moving 1000+ ArcGIS for Desktop Editor users to the web
The Forestry Commission have a duty of care for over 700,000 hectares of woodlands in England and Scotland with a market value in excess of £3 billion. Forester Desktop is the Commission’s principal corporate asset management system that underpins all the key business processes and activities taking place on the Forestry Commission estate - from conservation and recreation to land ownership, civil engineering and forest management.
The Forester Desktop application enables 1000+ front line staff do their jobs, helping to ensure legal and policy compliance, reducing and mitigating risks and acting as a corporate memory and knowledge base. However, in 2012 a number of challenges were identified by the business, namely the need for greater data transparency and collaboration; increase the user base; reduce complexity for users; meet the needs of a distributed and mobile workforce; to enable country divergence; not to be constrained by infrastructure. Coupled with advances in technology and increased bandwidth to rural areas, the Forestry Commission have met this challenge by delivering a centralised web editing solution.

The role of GIS in managing London’s Road Space
London is changing. The population is set to grow to 10 million by 2031 and the economy is recovering. London’s road space is central to enabling this growth. Alan will share with us how the team at TfL are implementing an enterprise-wide GIS as the foundation to support the planning and operational challenges associated with the variety and extent of construction and changes to the road space over the next 20 years. Alan’s challenge is how he can enable the transformation of London’s road space, whilst not impeding the movement of people and goods around the city so that London continues to be a great place to live, work, do business in.

About a year ago, we started using Progressive Web Apps (PWAs). The idea behind PWA was to replace native mobile apps. In this talk, I will show you what is possible to build with PWA, what kind of limitations exist, and what we learned in our journey. Along the way, you will see where progressive web apps can be a good fit for your own projects.
The main API for PWA creation is Service Workers, they are the heart of this “new web”. With Service workers, we can send push notifications to the user or do background sync and show data even when the user is offline. They are not some science fiction, but a script that is quite easy to use.
In this talk, we will see overview what are service workers and when and how to use them.

Streamlining the design and operation of infrastructure in WalesEsri UK
Streamlining the design and operation of infrastructure in Wales is both an imperative issue and a challenging undertaking, particularly when responding to the climate crisis and budgetary constraints in the Welsh context. The cost of digitisation and varying levels of digital knowledge amongst professionals often impede efforts to streamline processes. ‘Going digital’ with purchases of data, systems and training can be a hurdle for many infrastructure projects, particularly for smaller ones where digitalisation capex can be prohibitively high. See a Welsh example from AtkinsRéalis that provides a workable and highly successful demonstrator of how projects can benefit from a shared GIS model, providing rapid collaboration against a design deadline of climate change.

How climate data can help address the climate challengeEsri UK
Climate change has already altered the weather we experience and the magnitude of impacts from extreme temperatures and rainfall. These impacts manifest locally and can cause human causalities and damage to infrastructure and natural systems. In future, some further climate change is now inevitable, but the rate and magnitude of change will depend on global greenhouse gas emissions. New data and tools to use the data are available to help plot a path through the climate and weather challenges, enabling organisations at all scales to adapt to the changing conditions.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

2. My Work and My Account
Maintenance of street assets is a critical activity for local authorities.
Publishing real-time maintenance schedules on these assets will provide
the public with greater transparency and higher service standards. The
“My Work” application, developed on the Esri platform, provides an
infrastructure that allows the council to capture asset data quickly and
efficiently on tablet devices. The status of maintenance jobs is updated
and reported live to the council website. To deliver operational efficiency,
My Work also delivers a Web-based monitoring tool to aid the
management of these assets, which provides performance information
and drives resource planning. Historical data will be available to allow staff
to suggest working practice improvements.
My Account allows customers to log “Ad Hoc” maintenance issues online
via the Council website
