VITAMIN-D BIOSYNTHESIS
-The major natural source of the vitamin D
is synthesis of cholecalciferol in the skin
from cholesterol through a chemical
reaction that is dependent on sun
exposure (specifically UVB radiation).
-Cholecalciferol is converted in the liver to
Calcidiol (25-hydroxycholecalciferol)
-Calcidiol is further hydroxylated by the
kidneys to form calcitriol(also known as1,2
5-dihydroxycholecalcifero),the biologically
active form of vitamin D.
-Vitamin D is converted to Calcidiol in the
liver. Part of the Calcidiol is converted by
the kidneys to calcitriol, the biologically
active form of vitamin D. It circulates as a
hormone in the blood, regulating the
concentration of calcium and phosphate in
the bloodstream and promoting the healthy
growth and remodeling of bone.
