This document provides information on improving memory and reading skills. It discusses the three stages of memory: sensory register, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Various memory techniques are described, such as meaningful organization, visualization, recitation, and developing interest. The document also discusses effective reading strategies like SQ4R (survey, question, read, recite, review), applying different reading speeds, and marking a text to identify key points for success on tests. Positive thinking is emphasized as important for improving reading and life.

Studies gets simpler once you are aware of your method of studying. Understand the type of learner that you are and try and work on your shortcomings.
This includes a brief detail on the categories of learners and the very effective SQ3R study tool.
These study methods have proved to improve concentration, focus ,memory and quality of study.
Learning Objective: Assess methods for improving study skills
Learning to study effectively is a skill that benefits everyone, even the smartest in the class. When polled, most college students would agree that when they started college, they did not know how to properly study. In this seminar, we will address preparatory study principles, such as setting goals, knowing your learning style, being an active reader, participating in study groups, organizing your notes and study materials, and writing drafts of papers, that can help all students improve their study skills and perform better.
At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:
a. Identify the traits of successful studying candidates.
b. Generate methods for achieving successful studying habits.
c. Outline methods for implementing successful studying techniques.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

5. Short Term Memory
Lasts about a half a minute
Temporary and limited
Records what we see, hear, do, taste,
touch
Purpose is to ponder significance
and decide if it is important enough
to remember
6. Magical Number 7
It is easier to remember material
grouped in chunks of seven (+ or –2)
8. Long Term Memory
Large capacity
Permanent storage
Use it to store important information
for future use
Use it to store information for college
success
9. How are long term
memories formed?
Takes purposeful action
Repetition
Meaningful association
It must have survival value
Personal reasons
To pass a test
11. Is It True that We Never
Forget?
We remember what is stored in
Long Term Memory (LTM)
This is the goal of college study
12. How Long Do We
Remember?
Sensory Register less than one
second
Short Term less than one minute
Long Term permanent
13. To Store Information in
Long Term Memory
Requires rehearsal
Apply memory techniques
14. •Rate of Forgetting (or
losing access)
•AFTER 20 MINUTES 47%
• AFTER 1 DAY 62%
•AFTER 2 DAYS 69%
•AFTER 15 DAYS 75%
•AFTER 31 DAYS 78%

24. Visualization
Make a mental picture of what you
want to remember
Commercials make good use of this
technique
25. Recitation
One of the most powerful techniques
Memories exist in the form of a
chemical neural trace
Some researchers think it takes 5
seconds to establish this trace
Repeat it 5 times or keep it in your
mind for 5 seconds
43. Exercises to Strengthen the
Mind
Puzzles
Music

Ask the instructor
Stand up and read
Use tutoring
Pretend you understand
Take a break and come back later
64. Read with a Dictionary
Use 3X5 cards to
learn new words
65. Recite
Most powerful memory technique
Converts information from short
term to long term memory
Keeps you alert
FAST
69. How to Review
After each main section, review the
main points
At the end of the chapter, quickly
review the main points one more
time
Do your review quickly
73. Online Reading
