This document provides an overview of evidence-based practice and how to recognize high-quality research. It defines evidence-based practice as using research findings and theory to inform instructional techniques rather than personal opinions. Good research is characterized by asking relevant questions and using appropriate research methods. Experimental comparisons should have experimental control, random assignment, and appropriate measures reported with means, standard deviations and sample sizes. When experimental comparisons show no effect, this could be due to a lack of statistical significance, small effect size, or limitations in the research design or measures. Researchers should consider how similar the learners and context are to their own situation and look for studies that are replicated with practical as well as statistical significance.
