Leading Across Generations
What does it mean to work with a generation? What is a generation? A generation is generally understood as people who were born in a similar time frame, who have experienced similar life situations, share similar views, attitudes and maybe values which differ from other generations. Great events, traumatic events and unique situations define our experiences and alter out thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Examples of such accounts can include WWI, Depression, bombing of Pearl Harbor, WWII, Korean War, Polio vaccination, assassinations of the Kennedys and King, Walk on the Moon, Vietnam War, computer revolution, Twin Towers, shootings in schools, Super bowls, Presidential elections, special New Year’s Eve parties and so on. My grandmother grew up in the depression and was concerned about such things as lights being on in a room that no one was in and running the water full blast – and to me, these seem inconsequential, even trivial. The events such as those listed above can influence us in positive and negative ways and in the way we think about other nationalities and religions, the workplace, values on how we parent, use of technologies, education, the value we place on others, and even how we try to protect ourselves.

For many years, western companies looking for new users and new revenues have been attracted to the large populations and higher growth of emerging markets like India and China. Digital startups like Spotify and Net-A-Porter are the most recent arrivals on new shores. But product managers often find that importing their offerings as-is leads to rejection by emerging market consumers, and find that their attempts to make new products are not taken up by local consumers. How can we make products and services that are appealing to these new user groups?
In this talk I take a deep-dive into developing customised products for emerging market users, and reflect on the unique challenges that westerners face when we try to understand and design in this domain. When westerners design for emerging market users, we can be blind to what our users really want and instead offer what we want them to have; we can assume they live in cultural isolation and that they need help understanding complicated technology. I challenge these myths and illustrate alternative design approaches looking at successful products like the Tata Nano.
And all this through a talk that covers Darwin, Psy, Bollywood, Adaptive Path, the British Empire and the cost of a data connection in Bangalore costs. Researchers and designers will walk away with challenged and empowered to think and create differently for emerging market users as well as users at home.

Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that troubled him greatly, but he could not remember the dream. He called on his magicians and wise men to interpret the dream for him, but they could not without knowing the dream. Daniel was able to pray and receive revelation from God about the dream. He interpreted that the dream depicted four successive world empires represented by parts of a statue, and that a stone cut without hands would destroy them and establish God's eternal kingdom. Nebuchadnezzar was greatly impressed by Daniel's ability to interpret the dream and elevated his status.

- 13. Have you heard of the rainbow project? Students are given 5 blank New Yorker cartoons and must craft captions for each one. They must also write a narrate story, using as their guide only a title supplied by the test givers. (sample title: Octopus’s Sneakers) The Rainbow Project has been twice as successful as the SAT in predicting how well a students perform in college. What’s more, the persistent gap in performance between white students and racial minorities evident on the SAT narrows considerably on this test. This test is still in the experimental stages and is being funded by the COLLEGE BOARD. Daniel Pink
