This document discusses anticipatory socialization and how individuals develop expectations for future organizational roles and careers. It explains that anticipatory socialization occurs during childhood and young adulthood as individuals gather occupational information from their environment, including peers, education, family, media, and previous experiences. One influential source is the gendered toys children are provided, which can socialize early expectations about gender and careers. The document also discusses anticipatory organizational socialization and the processes of recruitment, determining person-organization and person-job fit, and selection that help individuals choose which organizations to join.

6. Divide into 4 groups
Pick a store: Wal-Mart, Target, Amazon, FAO Schwartz
Explore the toy section of the store’s Web site and
answer the following research questions:
RQ1: Upon entering the store site, at what point and for
what age are you first able to shop by gender?
RQ2: What toys are presented for boys and for girls?
RQ3: What “pretend play” toys are designated for boys and
which are designated for girls?
Do NOT make judgments about what you consider “boy” or
“girl” appropriate. Just rely on the filters & record findings.

8. Compare toy-store designated “girl toys” and “boy toys”
What are the implications for early stages of career socialization?
How have your own experiences from childhood shaped your
career expectations?
How will you respond next time you need a birthday gift for a kid?
