It has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Annual rainfall ranges from 30-50 cm mostly in winter. Common plants include blue oak, manzanita, chamise and greasewood, which have hard leaves and can withstand the heat and poor soils. Animals living in the chaparral biome include coyotes, lizards, mountain lions, foxes and snakes and have adapted to the hot, dry conditions.

1. Flora
 Plants must be able to adapt to the heat,
humidity and poor soil slightly
 Most plants are small, hard leaves which are
able to maintain moisture.
 Examples of plants include blue oak, corn oak,
poison oak, stunted trees, shrubs, cacti.
