CHANGES TO ISO 9001
By Ferry Machine Corp
INTRODUCTION
 A family-owned operation with more than six decades of history,
Ferry Machine Corporation specializes in the manufacture of
aerospace components as well as medical and surgical
instruments. Ferry Machine maintains a number of industry
credentials, including ISO 9001 certification.
ISO 9001 was created by the International Organization for
Standardization. As the world’s largest developer of voluntary
international standards, the organization helps industries
integrate proper procedures that both ensure the quality of
products and services and help to safeguard consumers.
Among its 19,500 international standards, covering sectors from
agriculture to technology, is ISO 9001.
CHANGES TO ISO 9001
 It relates to quality management systems and includes recent revisions
to reflect changes seen in globalization, reduction in tariffs, and trade
across borders, in addition to other factors changing the marketplace.
Dubbed ISO 9001:2015, the new standard takes into account the growth
in service-based economies and complex supply chains to establish
management techniques for processes used in creating products and
services.
While there is no specific prescribed documented procedures, ISO
9001:2015 encourages companies to develop their own approaches to
ensuring a high level of product and service quality. Risk-based thinking
should be considered when formulating a process to guarantee potential
obstacles are handled appropriately within specific sectors.
The updated standard offers a three-year period for companies to
transition certifications. After September 2018, certifications under ISO
9001:2008 will no longer be valid.
