For fabricators of welded structures that are subjected to cyclic loading, fatigue life analysis is critical—a significant percentage of engineering failures are
due to fatigue.
Design & Fabrication of Low Cost Small-Scale Fatigue Testing MachineAvinash Barve
Many engineering machines and mechanical components are subjected to fluctuating stresses, taking place at relatively high frequencies and under these conditions, failure is found to occur. This is “fatigue failure”.
Fatigue is a failure of material or machine due to the action of repeated or fluctuating stress on a machine member for some number of times/cycles. This failure begins with a small crack. The initial crack is so minute that it cannot be detected by the naked eye and is even quite difficult to locate . And this led to the invention of a fatigue the testing machine.
In view of effective design that will not fail accidentally, this research is conceived. This testing machine will determine the strength of materials under the action of fatigue load. Specimens are subjected to repeated varying forces or fluctuating loading of specific magnitude while the cycles or stress reversals are counted to destruction. The first test will include the fatigue test of the material . The second test which we are going to combine testing of bending or torsion. Thus the results of these processes will be plotted through software integration.
DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT OF EXPERIMENTAL SETUP OF INTEGRATED FATIGUE TESTING MACHINEAvinash Barve
The fatigue testing machine mostly used for industrial or laboratory applications that are
limited to performing single fatigue tests with the high leading cost. In the present paper, the experimental
setup of the traditional fatigue testing machine is integrated with a torsional test, to experimentally study
the effect of fluctuating stresses on the material under service. In contradiction to earlier machines, the
machine herein developed provides uniform bending and twisting moment distribution along the length of
the test specimen. The machine performs fatigue test and torsional test, which provides the extreme force
needed to understand the properties and behavior of materials. The machine consists of an electric motor
to provide the required torque and two circular arms with adjustable chucks to fit test samples of various
sizes. The machine provides computerized data for samples that fail with data pertaining to each sample. The
experimental model is designed and fabricated to match our customer's unique test objective.
Importance of Force Measurements and Their Traceability in Steel IndustryBülent AYDEMİR
In iron and steel industry, force measurements play an important role in areas such as pressing, rolling and extrusion, both in process control and in development of reproducible similar products and quality. In order to obtain accurate and reliable measurement results, it is needed to perform traceable calibrations of devices used in measurements. Calibration of devices should be performed according to ISO, ASTM, and TS standards. Using inappropriate equipment will result in production losses and cost increases that will be reflected in product quality. For this reason, calibrated devices should be used in measurements; also these devices should have acceptable range of deviation. In this study, usage area of force measurements in iron and steel industry and importance of certifying performed measurements have been examined.

Modeling and Simulation of Base Plate of Friction Stir Welding-Advanced Weldi...ijsrd.com
Friction stir processing is an emerging technique based on the principles of friction stir welding (FSW). It is a solid-state joining method that is energy efficient, environmentally friendly, and versatile. It is considered by many to be the most significant development in metal joining in a decade. The basic concept of friction stir processing is remarkably simple. A rotating tool with pin and shoulder is inserted in the material to be joined, and traversed along the line of interest. The heating is localized, and is generated by friction between the tool and the work piece, with additional adiabatic heating from metal deformation. A processed zone is produced by movement of material from the front of the pin to the back of the pin.

I remember the first time I was driving home from a far location. This was one of the scariest days of my life. The reason this day was so terrifying is that I had my first flat tire. I was miles from home, and where the flat tire occurred was while I was in the middle lane of a busy intersection. The popping of the tire was so loud and then I swerved. Luckily I missed the cars nearby, and was able to pull into the right lane to address the situation. I then called a tow truck and was towed to a nearby mechanic. To my surprise the reason for the flat tire was that there wasn’t enough air in the tire. I thought to myself I could have avoided all this if I just paid a bit more attention to the pressure in my car’s tires. This was a lesson I wasn’t going to forget anytime soon. Hopefully with this knowledge you can avoid making the same mistake I did. Your wallet and personal safety will thank you.
Expectations for design-to-deliver times can be up to half of what they were just ten to fifteen years ago. As a result, manufacturers are forced to compress their design and development processes. This has accelerated the pace at which technology must advance to allow manufacturers to streamline their processes and meet these challenging expectations. Further, to meet consumer demand for ongoing and rapid innovation, companies are exploring alternative design processes, new development models, and advanced manufacturing techniques.

FEA Based Validation of Weld Joint Used In Chassis of Light Commercial Vehicl...ijiert bestjournal
Generally automotive systems are subjected to dynam ic and static loads, due to hives driving and adverse conditions of the road surface, thus it causes cracks, noise, vibration and failure in an automobile, since in general the total effect of work for automobile system is lowered. Such effect is arising due to behaviour in types of loading, construction and condition of the work where the automobile system is and reducing it s strength. Therefore however most of the Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) chassis are man ufactured by welding to reduce the weight of the chassis. Hence there is a more stress concentration occurs at a welded joint region. The fundamental task is to develop a model of welded joint to sustain various loads of LCV chassis. Effect of different design parameters, properties of material are observed with respect to the strength of the weld and location of stress concentrations are identified. During the design process model parameters are often alter ed to evaluate alternative welding joining choices,to reduce weight of the system to sustain varying loading conditions without failure.
A study on the mechanical properties of s45 c medium type carbon steel specim...eSAT Journals
Abstract The experimental process is a fundamental technique used to determine the nature and behavior of many materials under study. In order to evaluate the fundamental properties of many engineering materials the use of mechanical testing techniques frequently play a crucial role. The development of new materials and the control of material quality are essential in the process of design and in their usage for industrial applications and construction. In this experiment, there were 2 sets (5 samples each) of medium type steel specimens S45C of 0.45% carbon content that were rigorously prepared according to ASTM standards under specific varied parameters. These parameters include the machining cutter speeds on the lathe machine and the mediums selected and temperatures set for the quenching process on the steel specimens in order to affect their overall microstructure. The specimens were then subjected to aggregate mechanical loading using a conventional tensile testing machine. The consequential effect of material structure metamorphosis under the selected quenching techniques was ultimately not part of the study as it involves microscopic analysis of grain boundaries and high-end precision equipment would be necessary to do any significant material analysis. The results of the experiment suggest that the macroscopic (not microscopic) effect of the lathe machining speeds do not significantly affect the tensile material strength of the S45 medium carbon steel specimen. Thus, the mediums and temperatures selected for the quenching process on the specimens had a marginal but significant effect on the elevated levels of tensile mechanical strength and strain of medium type carbon steel. Keywords: mechanical properties, carbon steel, lathe machine, S45C, quenching process, tensile test, stress, strain.

Contrary to dictionary definition, there is no such thing as complete hermeticity. All materials are gas permeable to some degree. A quality hermetic seal keeps the internal environment safe from contamination by external moisture and gases for its designed lifespan. This lifespan can range from a few months for a candy bar wrapper to decades
for high-reliability military electronics.

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.
Harnessing WebAssembly for Real-time Stateless Streaming PipelinesChristina Lin
Traditionally, dealing with real-time data pipelines has involved significant overhead, even for straightforward tasks like data transformation or masking. However, in this talk, we’ll venture into the dynamic realm of WebAssembly (WASM) and discover how it can revolutionize the creation of stateless streaming pipelines within a Kafka (Redpanda) broker. These pipelines are adept at managing low-latency, high-data-volume scenarios.

FATIGUE LIFE
For fabricators of welded structures that
are subjected to cyclic loading, fatigue
life analysis is critical—a significant
percentage of engineering failures are
due to fatigue. Heavy structures are
rarely subjected to constant load in their
lifetime, as factors like varying service
and environmental conditions cause
load to fluctuate. These fluctuations can
cause cracks to develop in the structure,
which can in turn lead to sudden
catastrophic failure.
HEAVY STRUCTURES ARE RARELY SUBJECTED
TO CONSTANT LOAD IN THEIR LIFETIME . . .
3. HOW TO IMPROVE
FATIGUE PERFORMANCE
2
EWI has the capabilities to characterize fatigue failure of
welded structures. Accurate assessments can be made with a
combination of simulation, analytical, and experimental methods
and knowledge of the loading modes. Weld test data is used
to support the analysis and prediction methods appropriate for
welded structures. EWI has developed and performed testing
on a wide array of materials, including steel, titanium, and
aluminum alloys, as well as composite-reinforced materials.
Fatigue performance can be predicted and improved through
non-destructive testing, structural modeling, welding and joining
techniques, and/or improved materials.
EWI has a full suite of software and analytical tools to model thermodynamics, structural response, and microstructure
prediction to support structural integrity and fatigue performance improvement.

ASSESSING
STRUCTURAL
INTEGRITY
Structural integrity assessment includes strength
and toughness calculations, weldability evaluation,
material testing, structural analysis, and lifecycle
prediction. When determining a structure’s reliability,
it is critical to answer the following questions:
n Does the structure have sufficient strength,
ductility, and toughness to meet the
demands placed on it?
n Can the base material and weld metal resist
catastrophic crack propagation?
n What discontinuities can be tolerated?
n Will the structure pass qualification tests?
n Can the desired lifetime be achieved?

CRITICAL
ASSESSMENT
EWI designed a testing program to evaluate fatigue
improvement techniques on a full-scale structure. Three
improvement techniques were tested on fillet-welded
sleeves for 168-mm-diameter pipes using resonant fatigue.
Improvements were observed when treatments were applied
even after 50% of the cyclic lifetime has been consumed. An
8 times extension of the remaining life was observed when
compressive stresses were induced in the toe of the weld
along with blunting of sharp transitions.
