Group 05 presented on the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD). The CSSD receives, stores, processes, distributes, and controls sterile and non-sterile supplies for hospitals. It receives soiled items, cleans and disinfects them, sterilizes using autoclaves, and distributes the sterile supplies. The staff uses chemical and biological indicators to ensure sterilization and proper handling. When autoclaving liquids, specific settings and procedures must be followed to prevent explosions. Nurses working in the CSSD are responsible for inventory, budgeting, hygiene, supervision, documentation, and reprocessing medical devices.

3. What is CSSD ?
The Central Sterile Supply Department
(CSSD) is the service responsible for
receiving, storing, processing, distributing
and controlling the professional supplies
and equipment (both sterile and non-
sterile) for all user unit of hospital for the
care and safety of patient under strict
quality control

11. How liquids are being autoclaved
An autoclave is a pressure chamber used
to carry out industrial processes requiring
elevated temperature and pressure
different from ambient air pressure.
Autoclaves are used in medical
applications to perform sterilization and
in the chemical industry to cure coatings.
The most common temperatures used
are 121 C- 132 C.

12. When we placed the liquids in autoclaving machine we must follow
some important steps.
• Place soiled glassware and label ware in secondary containers and
autoclave them in the solids cycle.
• Do not fill containers more than 2/3 full with fluids.
• Loosen caps or use wrapped instruments, lay them in a secondary
container before autoclaving in wrapped goods cycle.
• Never autoclave sealed containers of liquid as this could result in an
explosion of superheated liquid.
• When we autoclaving fluids in setting bar we use yellow color
button. It may course pressure decreases more slowly at the end of
sterilization.
• The autoclave must have a “LIQUID” setting that can be used for
liquid materials.
• The setting for liquids run for a longer period at a lower
temperature to minimize liquid evaporation and spills.

14. Roles and responsibilities of a nurse works in the CSSD
• A Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) nurse is a member
of a medical facility, usually a hospital or clinic, responsible for
maintaining the facility’s supply of sterile devices. Many CSSD
supervisors have experience in nursing.
