This document outlines content guidelines for films with different age ratings: - Films rated 15 should not contain discriminatory language or depict misuse of drugs. Moderate language, brief sexual activity, and infrequent horror are acceptable. - Films rated 12A can contain racist or homophobic remarks. They should not promote drug misuse or show how to access drugs. Strong language is allowed. Threat and horror can be shown. - Films rated 18 are only suitable for adults and can depict drugs and violence in more detail. Language is rarely restricted and sex and nudity can be shown explicitly.

2. Should not be seen in a cinema, or purchased
by someone under the age of 15
 Discrimination: Aggressive discriminatory language is unlikely and the
film doesn’t over all promote discrimination
 Drugs: misuse of drugs is infrequent and it shouldn’t give instructions on
how to misuse drugs.
 Language: moderate or strong language is used but only in context
 Sex: sexual activity can be shown but it brief and discrete.
 Threat: a moderate amount of threat, only infrequent horror scenes and
overall it isn’t disturbing.
 Violence: isn’t detailed but some gore is acceptable in context. Sexual
violence is hinted at but not shown and is acceptable in context
 Sex/Nudity: sex is reference and can be briefly portrayed

3. Under 12s can’t see a 12a in a cinema without
being accompanied by an adult
 Discrimination: although it doesn’t promote discrimination as a whole
there may be racist or homophobic remarks
 Drugs: the film as a whole shouldn’t promote drug misuse or show in
detail how to use easily accessible items.
 Language: strong language and very strong language could be allowed.
 Threat: threat and horror could be shown but there isn’t a huge amount
of focus on it.
 Violence: isn’t detailed but some gore is acceptable in context. Sexual
violence is hinted at but not shown and is acceptable in context
 Sex/nudity: there are no limits on nudity and sex can be portrayed and
hinted at but not in detail

4. Suitable only for adults, although many things
are allowed, it’s still for public viewing
 Discrimination:
 Drugs: can be shown in detail, and are portrayed positivly
 Language: language is rarely limited or restricted
 Violence: strong, violence and horror is acceptable with more detail than
there would be in a 15
 Sex/nudity: sex and sexaual violence can be shown more explicitly.
