Rating trailers
Mandela Long
Walk To
Freedom
I rated similar this trailer as BBFC examiners.
I identified weapons, in the trailer I can see
gun. Also without any problem I can see
discrimination among black people.
Moreover you can see violence, fights etc.
So I rate it as 15 +, however BBFC Examiners
gave PG, as they said that ‘ we don’t see
any blood or injuries, and there is a strong,
positive feeling running throughout the
whole trailer.’
I learn that even there is weapon in the
trailer or violence, they children above eight
years old can watch this with parents.
I rated similar this trailer as BBFC examiners.
However I identified weapons, as in the
trailer you can see whip. Similar I recognise
discrimination among black people, as they
were white people’s slaves. Moreover I can
see violence, outright sadistic violence again
among black people. Through that I rates
movie as a 15 +, however BBFC Examiners
gave PG, as they said that ‘despite the often
threatening tone, the violence is mostly
impressionistic, with no strong detail of any
blood or injuries. There are also no racist
terms used during the verbal abuse and
racism is implicitly condemned.’
I learn that children aged 12 can watch films
even with violence and discrimination
theme.

BBFC rating
Discrimination
Discriminatory language or behaviour is unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly disapproved of.
Drugs
References to illegal drugs or drug misuse must be infrequent and innocuous, or have a clear educational purpose or anti-drug message
suitable for young children.
Imitable behaviour
Potentially dangerous or anti-social behaviour which young children may copy must be clearly disapproved of. No emphasis on realistic
or easily accessible weapons.
Language
Infrequent use only of very mild bad language.
Nudity
Occasional nudity, with no sexual context.
Sex
Only very mild sexual behaviour (for example, kissing) and references to such behaviour.
Threat
Scary or potentially unsettling sequences should be mild, brief and unlikely to cause undue anxiety to young children. The outcome
should be reassuring.
Violence
Violence will generally be very mild. Mild violence may be acceptable if it is justified by context (for example, comedic, animated, wholly
unrealistic).
U Universal – Suitable for all
Discrimination
Discriminatory language or behaviour is unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly disapproved of, or in an educational or historical context,
or in a particularly dated work with no likely appeal to children. Discrimination by a character with whom children can readily identify is
unlikely to be acceptable.
Drugs
References to illegal drugs or drug misuse must be innocuous or carry a suitable anti-drug message.
Imitable behaviour
No detail of potentially dangerous behaviour which young children are likely to copy, if that behaviour is presented as safe or fun. No
glamorisation of realistic or easily accessible weapons such as knives. No focus on anti-social behaviour which young children are likely to
copy.
Language
Mild bad language only. Aggressive or very frequent use of mild bad language may result in a work being passed at a higher category.
Nudity
There may be nudity with no sexual context.
Sex
Sexual activity may be implied, but should be discreet and infrequent. Mild sex references and innuendo only.
Threat
Frightening sequences or situations where characters are in danger should not be prolonged or intense. Fantasy settings may be a
mitigating factor.
Violence
Violence will usually be mild. However there may be moderate violence, without detail, if justified by its context (for example, history,
comedy or fantasy).
PG Parental Guidance – General
viewing, but some scenes may be
unsuitable for young children
Discrimination
Discriminatory language or behaviour must not be endorsed by the work as a whole. Aggressive discriminatory language or behaviour is
unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly condemned.
Drugs
Misuse of drugs must be infrequent and should not be glamorised or give instructional detail.
Imitable behaviour
No promotion of potentially dangerous behaviour which children are likely to copy. No glamorisation of realistic or easily accessible
weapons such as knives. No endorsement of anti-social behaviour.
Language
There may be moderate language. Strong language may be permitted, depending on the manner in which it is used, who is using the
language, its frequency within the work as a whole and any special contextual justification.
Nudity
There may be nudity, but in a sexual context it must be brief and discreet.
Sex
Sexual activity may be briefly and discreetly portrayed. Moderate sex references are permitted, but frequent crude references are unlikely
to be acceptable.
Threat
There may be moderate physical and psychological threat and horror sequences. Although some scenes may be disturbing, the overall
tone should not be. Horror sequences should not be frequent or sustained.
Violence
There may be moderate violence but it should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood, but occasional gory
moments may be permitted if justified by the context. Sexual violence may only be implied or briefly and discreetly indicated, and its
depiction must be justified by context.
12A/12 – Suitable for 12 years
and over
UK vs. US rating
The United Kingdom
U: Universal, suitable for all
PG: Parental Guidance
12/12A: Suitable for 12 years and over
15: Suitable for 15 years and over
18: Suitable only for adults
The United States
G: General audiences
PG: Parental guidance suggested
PG-13: Parents strongly cautioned
R: Restricted
NC-17: No-one 17 and under admitted
At first comparison, it might appear that the American system of film rating is more liberal than that used in the UK, in that
younger viewers are technically allowed to see higher rated films in US theatres.
In British cinemas, parents/adults accompanying children are not allowed to take youngsters below 12 years olds into any
film rated higher than 12A. However, in the US, adults are permitted to take children of any age up to 17 years old to see a
film that has been passed as high as R (‘Restricted’)
The only film category that youngsters are expressly prohibited from seeing in US cinemas is the NC-17 – the rough
equivalent of the UK 18 rating. US rating board stating that NC-17 does not mean “obscene” or “pornographic” in the
common or legal meaning of those words, and should not be construed as a negative judgment in any sense. The rating
simply signals that the content is appropriate only for an adult audience’
RATING REAL TRAILERS
The Smurfs – U
I would rate ‘the smurfs’ a U, because this trailer doesn’t contain
any discrimination, bad language, drugs etc. The trailer seen to
be appropriate for people in all ages, but especially young
children
However we can see violence, for
example when on of the smurfs kicks a
cat .
But this doesn’t make film
unappropriated for young audience as
this violence is not sadistic
Maleficent – PG
I rated this trailers as PG, as this is based on fairy tale,
however some scenes are really sensitive and some parents
maybe doesn't wish their children to watch it.
For example when
witch throw Fairies
Or when there is fight
The mockingjay pt1– 15
I rated this trailers as 12A or PG13
because I think this trailers doesn’t
contain to much violence with details
or doesn’t include strong language, so
therefore I think this film is suitable
for children aged 12 and over.

  • 3. Mandela Long Walk To Freedom I rated similar this trailer as BBFC examiners. I identified weapons, in the trailer I can see gun. Also without any problem I can see discrimination among black people. Moreover you can see violence, fights etc. So I rate it as 15 +, however BBFC Examiners gave PG, as they said that ‘ we don’t see any blood or injuries, and there is a strong, positive feeling running throughout the whole trailer.’ I learn that even there is weapon in the trailer or violence, they children above eight years old can watch this with parents.
  • 4. I rated similar this trailer as BBFC examiners. However I identified weapons, as in the trailer you can see whip. Similar I recognise discrimination among black people, as they were white people’s slaves. Moreover I can see violence, outright sadistic violence again among black people. Through that I rates movie as a 15 +, however BBFC Examiners gave PG, as they said that ‘despite the often threatening tone, the violence is mostly impressionistic, with no strong detail of any blood or injuries. There are also no racist terms used during the verbal abuse and racism is implicitly condemned.’ I learn that children aged 12 can watch films even with violence and discrimination theme. 12 years a Slave
  • 6. Discrimination Discriminatory language or behaviour is unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly disapproved of. Drugs References to illegal drugs or drug misuse must be infrequent and innocuous, or have a clear educational purpose or anti-drug message suitable for young children. Imitable behaviour Potentially dangerous or anti-social behaviour which young children may copy must be clearly disapproved of. No emphasis on realistic or easily accessible weapons. Language Infrequent use only of very mild bad language. Nudity Occasional nudity, with no sexual context. Sex Only very mild sexual behaviour (for example, kissing) and references to such behaviour. Threat Scary or potentially unsettling sequences should be mild, brief and unlikely to cause undue anxiety to young children. The outcome should be reassuring. Violence Violence will generally be very mild. Mild violence may be acceptable if it is justified by context (for example, comedic, animated, wholly unrealistic). U Universal – Suitable for all
  • 7. Discrimination Discriminatory language or behaviour is unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly disapproved of, or in an educational or historical context, or in a particularly dated work with no likely appeal to children. Discrimination by a character with whom children can readily identify is unlikely to be acceptable. Drugs References to illegal drugs or drug misuse must be innocuous or carry a suitable anti-drug message. Imitable behaviour No detail of potentially dangerous behaviour which young children are likely to copy, if that behaviour is presented as safe or fun. No glamorisation of realistic or easily accessible weapons such as knives. No focus on anti-social behaviour which young children are likely to copy. Language Mild bad language only. Aggressive or very frequent use of mild bad language may result in a work being passed at a higher category. Nudity There may be nudity with no sexual context. Sex Sexual activity may be implied, but should be discreet and infrequent. Mild sex references and innuendo only. Threat Frightening sequences or situations where characters are in danger should not be prolonged or intense. Fantasy settings may be a mitigating factor. Violence Violence will usually be mild. However there may be moderate violence, without detail, if justified by its context (for example, history, comedy or fantasy). UK vs. US rating The United Kingdom U: Universal, suitable for all PG: Parental Guidance 12/12A: Suitable for 12 years and over 15: Suitable for 15 years and over 18: Suitable only for adults The United States G: General audiences PG: Parental guidance suggested PG-13: Parents strongly cautioned R: Restricted NC-17: No-one 17 and under admitted At first comparison, it might appear that the American system of film rating is more liberal than that used in the UK, in that younger viewers are technically allowed to see higher rated films in US theatres. In British cinemas, parents/adults accompanying children are not allowed to take youngsters below 12 years olds into any film rated higher than 12A. • 11. The Smurfs – U I would rate ‘the smurfs’ a U, because this trailer doesn’t contain any discrimination, bad language, drugs etc. The trailer seen to be appropriate for people in all ages, but especially young children However we can see violence, for example when on of the smurfs kicks a cat . But this doesn’t make film unappropriated for young audience as this violence is not sadistic
