Cell division occurs through two main processes: mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis produces two identical daughter cells from one parent cell during growth and tissue repair. Meiosis produces gametes with half the number of chromosomes from a single cell for sexual reproduction. The cell cycle consists of interphase, where the cell grows and duplicates its DNA, and either mitosis or meiosis, where the genetic material divides. During mitosis, the duplicated chromosomes align and separate into two identical daughter cells.
