Platinum is a precious metal with an atomic number of 78 and mass of 195.084. It is found naturally in gold-bearing sands and mines in Colombia and the western US. Platinum is resistant to tarnishing, does not harm the environment, and has a shiny smooth appearance. It is used to make jewelry, laboratory utensils, electrical wires, and was formerly used in leaded gasoline. However, platinum poses safety concerns as it can alter DNA, cause hearing damage, and kill animals that ingest plants containing platinum.
