Celador's Ownership and Operating Model
1.
2. CELADOR: OWNERSHIP
Celador is an independent production company formed in 1983, which
produced lots of popular TV shows. It is best known for the show ‘Who
wants to be a millionaire?’ and it owns 18 radio stations.
Celador was originally taken over by Complete Communications, which
bought out Shareholders including Paul Smith CBE and Jasper Carrott.
Under the ownership of Complete, Celador expanded its fledgling radio,
film and international business. Later on, Complete Communications
announced its intention to sell the company.
In 2004, Celador took legal action on Disney as they had been claimed there
was unpaid profits from their screening of the programme in America. In
2010 the company was awarded with £177m from damages failing to
receive fair share of the profits.
In 2006, they offered to sell their UK programme, ‘Who wants to be a
millionaire?’ and then they eventually started to sell other parts of the
business.
3. CELADOR: OPERATING MODEL
Celador is a small company that makes films on a project-by-project basis,
contracting free lance staff. They use strategies like this to make money
to enable them to produce films.
First the company is set up with a fund to use for their production. This Is
called Initial Capitalization. If the company decides otherwise, they can
use Project capitalization which is when companies finance from those
similar sources for a specific project.
The company will do deals with other small companies making partnership
and co-funding. They might also fund the project by selling it to a
distributor before it has been created.
The last thing is licensing where companies will do a deal with a huge
production company.

Competitors of Celador Productions are companies such as Sony, Film4
Productions, and DNA Productions.
However, Celador managed to make more profit than Film 4 Productions
with their film their Descent because Film 4 Productions made a loss
with their film Attack the Block.
Sony managed to make way more profit than Celador with Spiderman 2
because they spent a massive budget on the making of this film.
Celador made more profit than DNA Films who made the film Shallow
grave. However, Shallow Grave still made at least some profit.
