Style and influences
Florence and the Machine's style has been described as "dark, robust and romantic".
Their music is a mix of "classic soul and midnight-on-the-moors English art rock".
Welch stated that her lyrics related to Renaissance artists: "We're dealing with all of the same things they did—love and death, time and
pain, heaven and hell.“
Album influences
LUNGS :- From 2008, Welch had a relationship with Stuart Hammond, a literary editor; their temporary split provided inspiration for much of
the Lungs album.
CEREMONIALS :- In 2011 the couple announced that they had broken up by mutual decision because of conflicting career demands; the break-up
provided material for Florence and the Machine's 2nd album

FRAME
When she sings her songs she can’t
fully express how she feels to the
listeners.
The flowers seem to be
blooming this suggests that she
herself as an artist is blooming
in this album
Typically shown in a
forest type display.
Birds are conventionally known as free as
they have the ability to fly however in this
album art work the are resting on branches,
this may suggest that the birds don't
necessarily want to be free but want to be
with someone. As this album was inspired by
Florence's break up.
Presenting herself may
suggest that this album is
personal to her.
Only shows the top half of
herself so that the album art
work displays the lungs.
Unconventional to have an album to be called this as
normally an album would be named after the favourite
song by the artist but the album being called lungs
suggest that the songs are initially part of your lungs.
People can become breathless
either within a relationship or just
lost someone or enduring pain.
Our lungs are a perminant
accessory that we wear
everyday in every situation as it
has to with out it we could no
longer live
The dress is revealing to show her skin and the lung necklace,
this suggests that in this album she is very open in her emotions
and feelings over all herself, therefore revealing her lungs
(which keeps her alive) and her skin (which can be easily
damaged).
CLOTHING
Man made fabric instead of a forest setting this suggests
that Florence is not free and that she is restricted by her
emotions and only some come through. This album was
inspired by her break up therefore most of her feelings
are man-made.
Typically forest colours.

THE BACK COVER
CONTRASTS WITH AREAS
OF COLOUR ON DIGIPAK
ESPECIALLY ON THE
FRONT CLOVER
This visual technique may suggested the
music is the most important aspect of the
brand, as they really care about the quality
of the music more than the more visual
aspects that are typically focused on in the
mainstream pop genre.
BLACK &

Too seem simple
The lung diagram however
contrasts with this as it is
seen as complex organ to
allow us to breath so is
essential for us to live.

7. Inside Panes Cover
The image seen on the inside front pane show Florence performing. This
image portrays the idea the Florence is an talented and interactive live
performer (with the image showing her very close to the audience and her
fans) this image show that she is very interested in live, authentic, un
mainstream music.
The image on the CD itself is very
entropic; it is not very clear what the
picture shows.
However it maybe Florence herself tearing apart a
Heart they may suggest that in this album she is
exposing her heart from the inside out by herself as
she herself is doing this.

BOOKLET BACKGROUND
Same as the front cover , but without Florence this may have been
used so that the CD visual, as the CD plays her emotions therefore
the image of her is no longer required.
8. The booklet within the Digipak contains entropic images of Florence.
The images also come lyrics from the
songs on the album, the visual reflect
and emphasise the artist's lyrics.
The images are very original and
eccentric making them a typical visual
convention of the indie genre.
