•
•
•
•
Album: 'A Flash Flood Of Colour' by 'Enter Shikari'
Music genre: (difficult to place) Techno Rock.
Extreme psychedelic techno dance type music outbreaks, mixed with a
scream/rap style of singing creates a heavy rock sound which is individual
and exclusive to the band.
Message: Anti war and promoting Peace contrasts with the sounds,
Anger and strong messages of their lyrics are put forward clearly.
Bright alarming red of the cover connotes the danger of the meaning behind
lyrics.
Connotations of a warning sign of the outcome of war/poverty.
The bright triangle symbol would be easily recognised by fans of this band.
It has been placed in a contrasting natural setting of a forest symbolising
unnaturalness of war and injustice in the world.
The red triangle is a symbol of this corruption mentioned throughout the
album.
Sans Serif font is used to indicate the band name and album name clearly.
5. Deaf Havana
•
•
•
•
Album: 'Fools and Worthless Liars' by 'Deaf Havana‘.
Music genre: Metal/screamo.
Singer James sings of life experiences throughout most tracks.
Message: Child in picture connotes innocence and youth.
Contrasted with adult clothing, a news paper and brief case.
Costume suggests innocence has been disrupted. Aged photograph
signifies the snapshot nature of the lyrics.
• The main focus of the mise en scene is the little boy, who is off
centred. Attention is drawn to the space behind him, which makes
him look quite isolated.
• Colour: The sepia tone here connotes a dark time, which is reflected
in the nature of the music.
• Lettering: Sans Serif capitals signify no nonsense and suggest the
text has been taken from an archive.
7. Biffy Clyro
•
•
Album: Biffy Clyro's 2007 album 'Puzzle'.
Genre: Scottish Rock. Citing the influence of Nirvana and metalica. The
picture on the album cover doesn’t have connotations of this music genre.
•
Image: Naked model with jigsaw design in an empty room - off centred in
the mise en scene and using the rule of thirds. The lyrics of the album are
reflected which can be described as ambiguous with a sinister, though
sincere tone.
The pose (body language) of the actor connotes stress and deep thought.
Perhaps the model needs to work out how to put himself together? This
invites the target audience to purchase the album and solve the puzzles of
the lyrics themselves.
•
•
•
Mise en scene shows vague figures moving an object out through the door
in background. This could signify a new direction for the band musically.
Lettering: Bold, clear, white, sans serif font in capitals. Simple and no
nonsense which doesn't distract from the main image but is prominent.
