The two main objectives of the FD2018 can be
unpacked into several components
 Take stock of progress towards long-term global goals
including:
o collective efforts (as well as outcomes of efforts) of Parties,
o global peaking of greenhouse gases (GHG) as soon as possible,
o balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and
removals by sinks in the second half of this century,
o the reductions are made on the basis of equity, and in the
context of sustainable development and efforts to eradicate
poverty
 Informing the preparation of NDCs, including:
o information necessary for clarity, transparency and
understanding (CTU)

Conclusions
 The many components of the FD2018 objectives will require a
variety of information to be examined; it is unclear however, if and
how all these components will be treated explicitly but there are
implications on data and resource needs on the FD2018.
 Challenges associated with information needs to take stock of
collective efforts ex ante include non-comparable and insufficient
data.
 Input from multiple third party experts can help in filling some of
these information gaps.
 Many decisions on the 2018 facilitative dialogue have yet to be
made, understanding its information needs and challenges can help
o address the FD2018 objectives and its components,
o facilitate agreement on how the FD2018 could be conducted and
o focus discussions at the FD2018 itself.
