This document provides guidelines for cataloging art reproductions in a library collection, including information about physical description, subject analysis, and MARC formatting. Key details that should be included are the method of reproduction, dimensions, original artwork information if known, and subject headings for subject access. Sample records demonstrate how to catalogue different types of art reproductions, such as postcards, study prints from calendars, and apply subject analysis.

2. •A copy of a two- or three- dimensional work of
art that has been mechanically reproduced.
Reproductions of paintings, drawings, sculptures,
architectural renderings, and copies not made
from the original negative of photographs
created as works of art are included under this
heading and designated by the term “art
reproduction.” Originals of such works of art are
designated “art original”.

3. Physical description area
•Extent of item. List the number of art
reproductions. (1 art reproduction)
•Other physical details (: b&w and col.)
Two-dimensional materials. List the method of
the reproduction (1 art reproduction, 24 study
prints, 1 postcard, 1 sculpture) and b&w, col., sepia,
etc.
Three-dimensional materials. List the material
from which the item was made if this can be stated
concisely. If this is not possible, either omit this
information or give it in the note area. List b&w,
col., or one or two colours.

4. Two-dimensional materials. Height x width
of the item itself excluding mount or frame
are listed in centimeters. (; 61 x 46 cm.)
Three-dimensional materials. List the
dimensions in centimeters with, if necessary,
a word or phrase identifying the dimension.
When an item is packaged, list the type of
package and its dimensions. (; 15 cm. high)

5. Note Area
List the nature of the item unless this is apparent
from the rest of the catalogue record. (On card 10 x
16 cm.)
List unmounted or mounted and details of mounting if
such information is useful. (Unmounted)
If known, list information about the original, such as
location and size. (Original 155 x 408 cm.)
Three dimensional materials. Scale is listed if this
information is known and useful. (Reproduction of
original : 1966. Bronze; 427 cm. high. In Nathan
Philipps Square, Toronto)

6. Subject Analysis
Subject analysis policies for a multimedia collection
should be applied to art reproductions. The
classification numbers and subject headings found
in the sample records demonstrate possible
approaches to subject access that may be useful in
some collections. More specific subject headings
can be listed if patrons typically request works of
art by subject content.
