There are three main types of case studies: intrinsic, instrumental, and multiple case studies. Intrinsic case studies focus on understanding a specific individual or situation. Instrumental case studies examine a particular case to gain insight into an issue or refine a theory. Multiple case studies study multiple cases as part of an overall study to make conclusions more compelling and valid. Qualitative research techniques include ethnographic research to understand how people live and historical research to study the past. There are various sampling methods for qualitative research such as typical, critical, homogeneous, theoretical, snowball, opportunistic, confirming, and maximal variation samples.
