National Parks Across The Planet
Wonder, vastness, unsullied nature, and untouched beauty: all words that describe national
parks across the planet. One such place, a series of islands about 600 miles off the coast of
Ecuador, became officially recognized as an Ecuadorian National Park in 1959, and later a
UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 (Galapagos Islands Geology Volcanoes, n.d.). None other
than the Galapagos Islands themselves, the park is perhaps one of, if not the most captivating
National Parks on the globe. When one hears Galapagos Islands, the ecological diversity is often
the first association brought to mind. While it holds true that the islands contain possibly one of the
most diversified bionomics in the world, its geological history is just as... Show more content on

The Ecuadorian archipelago sits entirely on the Nazca tectonic plate, a continental plate constantly
subjected to volcanic and tectonic activity. While the plate endlessly drifts east southeast, it
encounters the Galapagos hot spot, a source of intense and relentless volcanic activity in the ocean.
According to White (1997), large columns of torrid rock approximately 100 kilometers in diameter,
called mantle plumes, emerge from the mantle at a rate of an estimated ten centimeters per year. A
peculiar interaction occurs with these plumes; once they rise from the lower asthenosphere to the
upper lithosphere, the plumes actually melt by approximately twenty percent from the sheer force
of pressure decompression rather than heat, as the lithosphere is cooler than the asthenosphere. This
melting begins at roughly 150 kilometers in depth, and continues rising until the process is halted
by reaching the lithosphere; the resulting magma rises into collections in and immediately beneath
the lithosphere, named magma chambers. When the conditions are ideal, these chambers can
release their magma onto the surface in an explosive attempt to equalize density and pressure,
colloquially known as a volcanic eruption (White, 1997). Consecutive eruptions like these over
hundreds of thousands of years cause the actual formation of a volcano; furthermore, over time,
magma can crystallise in the magma chamber causing a thickening of the chamber, and thus an

Japanese Culture In Japan
Social Analysis Japanese culture is a blend of modern western culture and traditional Asian
culture (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan, n.d.) And great value is placed on the need for
harmony, consensus decision making and social conformity and especially close co operation
between government and private enterprise, this emphasis on consensus will need to be taken
into account in business negotiations (Griffin Pustay, 2015, p. 61) Positive market aspects are
Japan s high! Education levels, with universal elementary education and literacy (Abe, 2013;
Institute of Export, 2015). However, problem workforce skill levels should the need arise to
employ local labour with 83% of employers having problems filling vacancies; these positions
include sales representative, engineers and IT staff (Manpower Group, 2015). This may require
sourcing staff from Australia. Should this be the case it will be necessary to apply for a
certificate of eligibility and a visa for periods of 3 months, up to 5 years, processing for this
usually takes 3 months (Embassy of Japan in Australia, 2014). The population is ageing and
increasingly health conscious, which provide greater scope for products promoting health benefits
such as SAFCOl ready to eat tuna meals (Austrade, 2016). Japan has a sizeable middle class with
the affluence to afford imported food products. (Griffin Pustay, 2015, p. 191). Since 1945 popular
culture, including music, fashions and foods have seen western influence, with

Theodore Roosevelt s Shaping of America Essay
Theodor Roosevelt, our 26th president, was a gruff politician who had a huge impact on
America. He is known for his accomplishments in the political, social, and business world during
the Progressive Era. His accomplishments helped shape America, and because of this influence,
he is one of the faces found on Mount Rushmore. Theodor Roosevelt was born on October 27,
1858, in New York, New York. As a child he was frail and timid, and as a result, most of his
education was through tutors in his home before he went to college. Around the age of 13 he
became determined to learn how to defend himself, because while on a stage coach two other boys
started to beat him up and he could not defend himself. He knew that his efforts in learning how...

On one occasion when he was against a bill to make manufacturing cigars in one s home illegal.
He however promptly changed his mind when he saw the conditions of the homes. The tobacco
was stowed about everywhere, alongside the foul bedding, and in a corner where there were
scraps of food. His disgust and shock validated his changing vote. During Roosevelt s third term,
he received a telegram that stated that both his wife and mother were very ill. They both died
within hours of each other. In his diary, Roosevelt drew an X across most of the page, and wrote,
The light has gone out of my life. After this tragic loss, he decided to go to a ranch that he had
purchased in 1883 and become a rancher. Unfortunately, Roosevelt was not taken seriously by
the locals as a real rancher, because they thought of him as a city New Yorker, who was not tough
enough for the Dakota Badlands. He had to initially put up with their ridicule. But in the end, he
proved them all wrong. On one occasion, he apprehended two criminals and watched them for
hours before the authorities came. A newspaper wrote Theodore is a Dakota Cowboy. When he
first went on the range, the cowboys took him for a dude, but there is no man who inspires such
enthusiastic regard among them as he. Shortly after his return to New York, Roosevelt was elected
governor. Later, Roosevelt was chosen as the running mate to William

W. E. B. Dubois Cultural Context
I decided to focus my discussion on W.E.B. Du Bois and the cultural context at the time. W.E.B.
Du Bois or William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was a teacher, editor, author, and philosopher.
Unfortunately, he missed Martin Luther King s I Have a Dream speech, and he died on the eve
of that speech. Du Bois worked with a lot of organizations like the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He was born in 1868 in Massachusetts. Five years
ago, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation which made slavery illegal in
America. Du Bois attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. He went to college in 1885
while times were difficult. These times were tough because the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) tried to

Du Bois wanted to fight racial inequality and unfair treatment, so he fought by teaching and
educating people. He thought educating people would cause people to realize the problems of
discrimination and unfair treatment by color. Moreover, education would change the minds and
souls of people. Due to the historical events, the KKK, and racial inequities, this drove Du Bois
to write The Souls of Black Folk. The Souls of Black Folk focuses on the color line problem,
how African Americans suffer like their low financial success, and racial inequities. The Souls
of Black Folk is one of Du Bois s most famous and influential books. Du Bois s ultimate goal in
The Souls of Black Folk is to promote the concept of human brotherhood. Also, his goal in that
book is to not have a color line because it breaks human relationships and societies apart. An
interesting fact about Du Bois is he was the first African American to receive a Ph.D. from
Harvard. After multiple school degrees, he set off writing and publishing multiple works like The
Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study, The Souls of Black Folk, The Comet, and

Long Beach Appraisal
Everyone involved in selling and buying of real estate in Long Beach has some unconditional
interest in appraisals. The result of an appraisal has something or the other to do with what the
buyer, seller, realtor, and lender are expecting out of the sale. If a property has been valued quite
low by the appraiser, the seller would then be needed to lower the market price he or she had set.
If we consider a Realtor in this case, it would mean a significant dip in commission. On the other
hand, a high valuation of a property may result in the buyer having to pay a lot more than its true
worth. In this situation, a realtor may receive high or low commission, depending on the final
selling/buying price of the property. With these situations, you... Show more content on

If you are considering to hire someone to do this job, you should make sure that you approach a
local appraiser, having a number of appraisal years in his locker. If you reach someone who has
recently received the license, you may have to bear some frustrations in getting what you
expect. However, an experienced appraiser will save you from having sleepless nights. This is
why you should always work with an appraiser who comes with all the credentials. The appraiser
may be hired, either by the buyer or the seller; for different reasons, of course. A buyer would
hire an appraiser to have an accurate assessment of property, its price, and mortgage options. On
the other hand, a seller would do the hiring to know the value of his or her property. Based on
the valuation and the areas of improvement, the seller can make amendments to his or her
property, if viable. This will help the seller in coming up to a maximum price that he or she can
get after selling his or her property. The seller would work to get the most of his or her property
and the buyer would look to pay as least as possible. In all of this, it is very important not to
forget the real reason why appraisals are done. An appraisal report features many things, most of
which are very hard to understand for a common buyer or seller. Good appraisers will ensure that
they go that extra mile and make buyers or sellers understand things that

The Snow Man By Wallace Stevens
In The Snow Man by modernist poet Wallace Stevens, the idea is brought up that one must have a
certain mind to see things a certain way; in his poem, Stevens explores the idea of perception,
challenging the realities commonly seen, with one common scene often interpreted. The poem
describes a scene in the midst of winter s gloom, then shifts into the perceptionof this scene, saying
how in reality there is no gloom. Stevens mentions how one must have a mindof winter (line 1) to
refuse internal psychological interpretations on the outside world. But at the same time, he is
leaning to the other side, saying how difficult something like that is. In an earlier line, Stevens
says to regard (line 2), but he laters shifts to behold. (line 5) The word behold implies awe, and
the words that follow it, the junipers shagged with ice/ the spruces rough in the distant glitter/ of
the January sun; (lines 5 7) seem to evoke a sense of melancholy. He follows that set up with a
sort of obvious fact tone in his next line by saying and not to think of any misery in the sound of
the wind. (lines 7 8) Stevens is stating that one must have a mind of winter, or a mind that is like
winter, in order to look at all the desolation, and not think of precisely that. But he uses language
that sets up a very lonely mood, which is the reality of what he is trying to say. As something is
seen and perceived, minds interpret it accordingly to what they feel; vise versa, something
commonly associated

Daniel Boone Research Paper
The famous trail blazer and frontiersman Daniel Boone spent his early childhood on what is
now the Daniel Boone Homestead. He grew up on the homestead, where he learned to love the
wilderness. In 1750, when Daniel was fifth teen years old, his parents decided to move from the
homestead. They moved to western North Carolina where they could own more land. After his
family moved, other noble families like the Maugridge and DeTurks bought the land and lived
there. They built many additions to the 579 acres of land, such as adding saw mills, barns,
blacksmith houses and the remodeling the Boone home itself. The historical site of the Daniel

Comparative Character Analysis on Simeon and Levi from...
Anita Diamant s novel The Red Tent is a Midrash revolved around the biblical passage of Genesis
34: Dinah and the Shechemites. In this story Anita Diamant gives a voice to Simeon and Levi s
sister, Dinah, who is known as the woman who was raped then later loved by Shechem. After
Shechem s injustice of Dinah, Shechem and his city were slaughtered by Simeon and Levi. Both
biblepassages and the novel The Red Tentprovide some similar and some different characteristic
traits for Simeon and Levi which in turn allows the readers to take away and learn more from the
Midrash story. The readers are able to further involve themselves in the relevance of Dinah s voice
and story. Even though Simeon and Levi are separate individuals, for the purpose... Show more

Simeon and Levi grew through both their experiences of violence and faith. Eventually they
repented their sins they brought upon Joseph, their brother. The most significant aspect of their
personalities is their zeal for cruelty and violence. In the Testament of the Patriarchs, it is
understood that God came to both the Simeonites and Levites discussing their enthusiasm for
violence. Eventually, even though warned by Simeon, the Simeonites could not overcome their
obsession of cruelty and violence. Therefore, the Simeonites numbers eventually decreased and they
were finally absorbed into the Judahites. The Levites, on the other hand, overcame their zeal for
cruelty and violence by focusing their fixation towards God thereby becoming a holy priesthood.
Through passages in the bible and the Testament of the Patriarchs, Simeon and Levi were
characterized as cruel, rash and violent leaders who were considered righteous in their vengeance of
Shechem. But they made many dishonest and immoral decisions such as enslaving Joseph. Even
though they made these dishonest decisions, the Levites were able to sustain and thrive as a holy
priesthoodНѕ whereas the Simeonites were unable to change their ways, this eventually led to their
obsolescence. In Anita Diamant s novel, The Red Tent,

Gung Ho Movie Analysis
Gung Ho Movie 1.What is your opinion of Hunt Stevenson? What kind of leader was he? Was he
effective? In my opinion, Hunt Stevenson, is a good leader. In the situation of the car plant, a
cross cultural leadership was needed no only because of the Japanese but for the expectations
that the owner had from the American employees. In order for the American workers to
understand and adapt to the expectations, they needed a leader who was able to make them see
that they were expected to work in a different way. This is a very difficult task, and Hunt
Stevenson was able to do this, which in my opinion is admirable. In addition, this could have been
a very stressful situation, but he managed to carry out the project in the best possible way. In...

For that reason, they went back to the car plant determined to attain the original goal. 4.What
evidence can you show, through using examples from the movie, that there was a decline in the
economy of the town? This company was the main source of jobs in this town. In one part of the
movie, Hunt Stevenson girlfriend mentions how other businesses were shutting down after the
car plant was closed. Therefore, this shows how there was a decline in the economy of the town.
This was a chain reaction. The explanation to these collapse of the economy of Haleyville is that
since income went down, the purchasing power of the citizens was not the same, and other
businesses could no longer operate without customers. 5.What were some of your favorite
humorous parts of the movie? I found really funny when Oishi realized that they were going to
shut down the car plant. He went to the river and Hunt Stevenson though he was going to drown
himself. Also, whenever the employees were encouraged to do some exercise routines before
starting to work. Another funny part was when Buster came back to the car plant, he was

movie and tell me if you think the movie is still relevant today I personally believe that this is a
great movie. The story of the auto plant in Haleyville exemplified many of the topics that I have

Female Genitalia Mutilation ( Fgm )
Female Circumcision: Female Genitalia Mutilation As a nursing student in my first experience
working in a labor ward, I witnessed a lady birthing a baby with part of the birth canal scarred and
narrow due to her circumcision at puberty. To say that the birthing process was hard to watch is an
understatement. As the labor progressed with no sight of the baby coming out naturally, she was
offered a C section, which she vehemently turned down. She said, I don t want to be the joke of my
peers. I have to do it like others did it. Watching this, made me more curious and passionate to find
the origin of this practice and hopefully, educate the practitioners leading to its eradication. Some
may argue that the after effects of female genital mutilation (FGM) are not new. I hope that my
research into the origin of this practice will help the public health community understand how it can
help these women and eradicate this practice. For everything that has a beginning, most of the time,
has an end. Delancer (2015) presenting a speech to The United Nations High Commissioner for
Human Rights (UNHCHR) on traditions that hurt women states that: Most women in developing
countries are unaware of their basic human rights. It is this state of ignorance which ensures their
acceptance and consequently, the perpetuation of harmful traditional practices affecting their well
being and that of their children. Even when women acquire a degree of economic and political

The Importance Of Threats In Birds
While in modern birds, CML originates on the pygostyle if present, since it had been either absent
or reduced among most birds. Hemal arches were observed in Sapeornis, but not in Confuciusornis.
The formation of the pygostyle alone is to enough to cause abrupt reduction of CML in
Confuciusornis and in living birds. Researchers believed the complex functional repertoire of extant
birdtails was most likely a result of decoupling of the tail from the hindlimbs, with further
adaptations within the tail involving flight. Next, researchers performed a developmental analysis
on the tail structures. During tail extension, the retinoic acid (RA) gradient is opposed by posterior

Rashid, et al. 2014). The study also shown Hoxb13 also was able to inhibit neuronal proliferation,
this ensures the lack of spinal ganglia at the end of the tail. Another ability of Hoxb13 was
intersecting the Wnt/Fgf/RA gradient by decreasing concentrations of Cyp26a1, this also leads to
tail termination. Researchers also believed that there should be one or more mutations involve in
the transition of bird tails from long theropod tails to short avian tails with distal pygostyle.
Changes in cis regulatory regions (CREs) were most likely responsible for this phenotypic change.
Despite the lack of dinosaur DNA, researchers were still able to examine gene pathways that
generated dinosaur traits through an evolutionary developmental biology, also known as the evo
devo approach. In order to narrow down the list of genes that may have been modulated by
mutation, they looked at the genetic analysis of the mouse, because mouse has the greatest
accumulated data on mutations among all other vertebrate. From the MGI Jackson Laboratories
database, only two mutants, the Hoxb13 and Slx4 knockout mice, among the 159 mutants with
affected tails have a modest increased in the numbers of caudal vertebrae. The study suggests that
the early decoupling of the tail from hind limb may have facilitated tail shortening through a
process of relaxed purifying selection

Hemingway s Use of Economy In The End of Something Essay
Hemingway s Use of Economy In The End of Something
Hemingway is renowned for his brief, simple and economical writing style. This is present in the
story The end of something , but how does he achieve this and what effect does it have on the story.
Hemingway has an economical writing style, which is achieved through the repetition of words. An
example of this is the use of the word said after any dialogue between Marjorie and Nick. This can
seem quite juvenile in style, many authors would be more descriptive, but by repeating this simple
and plain word Hemingway is commenting on the tediousness of their relationship. This is
reinforced later when Nick remarks it isn t fun anymore . When ... Show more content on

There are several lines and words in the story that have double meanings and it is for us the
reader to interpret them. An example of this is the word Lying in the following sentence Yes
Nick said lying, his face on the blanket . Lying could mean one of two things, lying face down
or not telling the truth. If we take the former meaning he could be lying because he doesn t want
to look at Bill because he feels guilty, if we take the latter then it suggests that Nick is
embarrassed about his actions and doesn t want to admit that he hurt Marjorie. The use of double
entrГ©es make the audience think more about there own perception and is also economical
because it is using one word to convey two meanings. There is also a vagueness in the story
where we the audience are meant to fill in the gaps. For example the relationship between Bill and
Nick is not explained, are they just friends or is there an illusion to a homoerotic relationship?
Making the audience an active reader is the one of the main functions of an economical style.
The metaphors in the story require an active reader to perceive them. An example of an extended
metaphor in the story is fishing. In this metaphor, Nick is a fish, for whom biting would be
deciding to marry. Marjorie is hopeful that the fish are

University September 19th, 2014 Abstract The aerodynamic characteristics of a Circulation
Control Wing (CCW) air foil have been investigated and comparison studies were made by
different companies and aeronautic organization throughout world. The program has been very
intense and many original results have been granted though different models of Circulation
Control Wings. CCW system as tested will be difficult without examining the noise field of an
isolated thin slot of span comparable to that used in the CCW itself. Moreover, many more work
has been done like extremely high aspect ratio jets similar to the CCW slot. This technology
mainly use on the main wing of an aircraft in order to increase the maximum lift coefficient when
large lifting forces at low speeds. The implementation of CCW system can create more air flow
over the surface of flaps and slates consequently aircrafts can allow much more lift at low speeds.
Introduction What is CCW? Circulation Control Wing (CCW) is one type of control technology
of air blowing around a surface like flaps and redder edge to change the force and moment
characteristic of an aerodynamic body. CCW technology is widely using in the aircraft wings and
helicopter rotors and even to automobile industry for improved aerodynamic performance.

Alka Seltzer Research Paper
Alka Seltzer is a medicine that acts as a pain reliever and an antacid. Antacids are used to help
neutralize the acids in the stomach and help treat acid reflux, heartburn, indigestion, and gastritis.
The tablets contain sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) and citric acid (C6H8O7). The sodium
bicarbonate is a base that helps neutralize the acids in the stomach, mainly hydrochloric acid(HCl).
It does this by the following reaction: Na3C3H5O7(aq) + 3HCl(aq) H3C3H5O7(aq) + 3NaCl(aq).
When the tablets are dropped into the water, a reaction occurs in which water (H2O), sodium

The Total Revenue And Total Cost
A.Profit Maximization a1. The total revenue (TR) to total cost (TC) approach relies on the fact that
profit equals revenue minus that cost and focuses on maximizing the greatest difference between
TR and TC.
Total Revenue (TR): Is the income made from the sales of a given product. (McConnell., 2011)
This total does not take include the cost of producing the product. To calculate the TR of a product,
you must first multiply the sales price of the widget by the quantity sold.
TR = Sales Price * Quantity Sold
Total Cost (TC): The sum of fixed cost and variable cost at each level of output. (McConnell., 2011)
TC = TFC + TVC (Total cost = Total Fixed Cost + Total Variable Cost)
Graphically speaking the total revenue curve rises, but at a decreasing rate the curve turns into
more of a horizontal line. Ultimately, total revenue begins to decrease. a2. The marginal revenue
(MR) to marginal cost (MC) approach uses marginal analysis by comparing (MR) and (MC).
Marginal Cost (MC): The change in total cost as the output level changes one unit. (McConnell.,
2011)
Marginal Revenue (MR): The change in total revenue from the sale of one additional level of
output. (McConnell., 2011)
MR = (change in total revenue) / (change in quantity/output) or MR = ∆TR / ∆Q
Since Company A is a price taker, the sale of each additional widget adds to total revenue the same
amount that is equal to the selling price. Thus, marginal revenue equals the same selling price that

Shakespeare s Sister
Virginia Woolf in the chapter Shakespeare s Sister from A Room of One s Own states that
women in the 19th and 20th century did not have the same privileges and opportunities that men
got in their lifetime, thus not being able to explore their passions of writing and art, rather being
the slave of any boy whose parents forced a ring upon her finger (694). She uses this to argue
why women are seen as inferior to men and that if women had had the same freedoms to live life
contrary to what society insists, they would be able to write like Shakespeare and have an equal
playing field to men.
One of Woolf s main points in her essay is that women did not get the same opportunities as men
and were discouraged by society to write, act, and make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Woolf states: Because the mind of an artist, in order to achieve the prodigious effort of freeing
whole and entire the work that is in him, must be incandescent, like Shakespeare s mind, (703).
By this she means that men had the freedom to write, they did not have society discouraging
them, or putting roadblocks in their way. Women could not think for themselves because society
was constantly telling them what they should do and who they should marry, and encouraging
them to be mothers, rather than leaders. Having to live up to society s expectations certainly did
not let women have an incandescent mind. Woolf also states: The world did not say to her as it
said to them, Write if you choose; it makes no difference to me. The world said with a guffaw,
Write? What s the good of your writing (701). This lack of encouragement for women made it
difficult for them to achieve their dreams and be able to showcase their talents to the world.
This false notion of men being intellectually superior to women was a widely accepted idea in the
19th century. Woolf explains, there was an enormous body of masculine opinion to the effect that
nothing could be expected of women intellectually (702). By this, one could infer that women were
only seen for their beauty, and as wives. This objectification of women is seen in society today
through media s portrayal of women, and through many cultural norms of women being expected to

righteous. The world was judged and found wicked, and so it was drowned. A new start is to be

Greek myth. Both are strikingly similar, in that the worldwas punished for its wickedness by being
flooded. In each of the flood stories, the cause of the flood, the circumstances, and the aftermath
are very nearly the same. The world was wicked. And so the world had to be punished. In the

Therefore, He decided to destroy mankind and start anew. However, there was one man who
found grace in the eyes of God, and his name was Noah. Noah alone was a righteous man who

ark in order to preserve life on the earth. God wanted mankind to continue, but those that were on
the earth at that time were so corrupt, they needed to be destroyed. In the Greek myth, mankind
was again found to be wicked. This wickedness was exemplified by Lycaon, a tyrant king who

Naturalism Literary Period
Naturalist writing portrays individuality within a character allowing one to obtain humanistic
themes from these literary works. Naturalists utilize mundane monotonous lives and reveal the
heroine within, when all (environment, opportunities, intuition) seems out of control. This type of
literature was found relatable during the rapid urbanization and naturalization after the Civil War,
where many in bustling developing cities suffered from poverty and its poorly prevented
consequences. The American naturalist movement was important due to the introduction of themes
involving popular apprehension during this time period including; man vs. nature, man vs. society,

Also unlike romanticism, Zola uses his characters as a device for symbolism rather than a hero for
readers to look up to. In these naturalistic writing of Zola, there is also much emphasis of people
working together in groups, the literary references are greatly due to the labor wars that were taking
place during the turn of the century. Zola also took frankness about sexual functions much further
than the early Realists had dared; and it is this, combined with a pervasive pessimism about
humanity, which chiefly characterizes the Naturalist novel (Brians). Americans were attracted to
this relatable coarse naturalism, more than that of realism.
Though realism and naturalism were introduced through the protest against romanticism, without
these tragic tales of fiction, the stories we know today, such as the all American detective story
would not be a part of even our most elementary entertainment.
Naturalism s main attraction to the American people was due to the timeframe in which it
introduced its morals and themes to the population. The repugnant forces and perplexing
relationships in life are represented through naturalist literature. Plots in literary naturalism follow a
prominent decline. These plots often elaborate a character s general worsening. Naturalist stories
tend to be written in an omniscient third person point of view. This format presents an objective

Charlie completely alters his lifestyle to provide for Raymond. At the beginning when Charlie

Biblical Allegory In The Edenian
In a world where popular culture is ever changing, the Bible continues to provide inspiration for
many cultural texts. The practice of religion has always been tied to popular music in a
symbiotic way (Rauhut, 2017), and representations of the Bible remain prolific in popular music
today. Sara Bareilles is an American pop rock and soul artist, who achieved mainstream success
with her 2007 song (I m not gonna write you a) love song. Her third album The Blessed Unrest
was released in 2013, and features the song Eden (Bareilles, Sara Hales, Matt. 2013), a song that
contains heavy biblical connotations. The lyrics of Eden are symbolic of the traditional story of
Adam and Evein Genesis 2 and 3 from the Christian Old Testament, and demonstrate how music
continues to be influenced by the Bible in the 21st Century. The song Eden offers an excellent
example of the way biblical allegory can be used to retell stories from the Bible through music,
however it also shows how popular culture provides alternative interpretations of biblical texts as
well. In this essay, I will first explore the world in the text through an in depth analysis of the
biblical allegory within the lyrics of Eden, to show how it conveys the traditional story from
Genesis 2 and 3. I will then go on to consider the world behind the text; discussing how Eden is
inspired by Bareilles own life, and the way artistic decisions made within the song differ from the
interpretation of the traditional biblical text.

Conventions Of Harold And Maude Ashby
In the Hal Ashby film, Harold and Maude, Ashby uses the conventions of the romantic comedy to
bring Harold and Maude together in order to show the audience that life should be lived while being
the truest person they can be. This film uses the conventions of romantic comedy to make a film
that celebrates nonconformity and choosing ones own path in life rather than one that is
predetermined by others. The conventions of meeting/separating/uniting, the use of spontaneous
burst of song, the idea of the unruly woman, and the opposing characterization of Harold and Maude
are effectively used in the filmas a way to push the theme forward and reveal the message of the
film.

Harold is obsessed with death and goes to funeral and demolition sites for fun. He does not go
there to enjoy what life there was in the objects before their demise, but to obsess over the decay
and death. This is due to his mother s reaction when he blows up the chemistry room at his
boarding school and is told of his death. She faints for the attention of the police officers and the
party goers. Harold begins seeing death as a way to get attention, and sees death, and his fake
suicide attempts as a way to live. Maude is instead obsessed with life. She goes to funerals in
order to celebrate the life that was lived before the death, and goes to greenhouses to see how
things grow and live. As she tells Harold, I like to watch things grow. (Harold and Maude)
Maude s obsession with life is what allows Harold to learn how to live. Since she enjoys
watching things grow and seeing how they turn out, she decides to help Harold. She is also a
Holocaust survivor. She already has an intimate experience with death from her time in the
concentration camps. Instead of choosing to obsess over the death and destruction she witnessed,
she instead chooses to obsess over the life that she, and others lived. Her obsession with life
represents the breaking of societal roles that many people are forced into. Since Harold and
Maude are such opposite characters in how they view life, the film is able to

Micro-Economic Impacts on Tesco Plc
1.0 Introduction
In this essay we are going to evaluate the micro economic factors on the activities and performance
of Tesco.
Tesco Plc (2011) states, that the retail industry is a highly competitive environment. Tesco
competes with a wide variety of retailers of varying sizes and faces increased competition from
UK retailers as well as international operators in the UK and overseas. Failure to compete with
competitors on areas including price, product range, quality and service could have an adverse
effect on the organisations financial results. Tesco aims to have a broad appeal on price, range and
store format in a way that allows them to compete in different markets. There is a risk that Tesco
may not deliver their stated strategy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
5.0 Barriers to Entry
Barriers to entry are the means by which Tesco s potential competitors are blocked out. Due to
Tesco s monopolistic characteristics, Tesco will be able to enjoy higher profits in the long run as
rivals have not diluted market share. Three barriers of entry are:
Patents are legal property rights to prevent the entry of rivals. They are generally valid for an
average of 20 years and give Tesco the right to prevent competitors from using patented products.
Tesco can sell licences to competitors for a stated fee.
Using Advertising and Marketing Tesco have developed customerloyalty; their club card has
played a pivotal role in their customer loyalty. Thus making demand less sensitive to price; due to
advertising leading to an outward shift in demand.
Tesco engage in brand proliferation, as it is a firm which sells a vast range of products, this may
portray Tesco differently to consumers. This is common barriers to entry in these types of markets
as it is non price competitions for household good.
6.0 Porter s Five Forces
In order to evaluate the competitive environment surrounding Tesco, I shall utilise Porter s five
forces model illustrated in figure 2.

Angelman Syndrome
There are many diseases and syndromes that occur in the developmental stage of human
development. One of the many syndromes is Angelman syndrome. When this syndrome was first
discovered by Harry Angelman, it was known as happy puppet syndrome . This syndrome is not
typically diagnosed at birth, but can also be diagnosed from the ages of one to six. This syndrome
is a neuro genetic disorder that occurs in one in 15,000 people. Because of its rareness, this
syndrome is often misdiagnosed as autism or cerebral palsy. Make thesis Angelman syndromeis
caused by a defect in the UBE3Agene, has various symptoms, that can be misdiagnosed, and
patients will live with lifelong treatment. The are various causes of Angelman syndrome, but the

Angelman syndrome can be diagnosed within the first year of the life if the abnormalities are
noticed and investigated, but the disorder is more often diagnosed between 1 and 4 years of age
as the child s abnormalities become more clinically apparent (Bevinetto). In order to confirm the
diagnosis, a blood test must be done to look at the child s genetics (Angelman). Then, a
combination of genetic test can reveal the chromosome defects. There are three different defect
tests may reveal: parental DNA pattern, missing chromosome, or gene mutation. Parental DNA
pattern test screens for three of the four genetic defaults that cause this syndrome. To find out if the
chromosome is missing either a fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) test or a comparative
genomic hybridization test (CGH) can show if portions of chromosomes are missing. It is rare if
Angelman syndrome occurs with only a gene mutation. This happens when the UBE3A gene is
present and active, but mutated. A UBE3A gene sequencing test is used to look for maternal
mutation (Mayo). After the diagnosis is complete, treatments are discussed with the patient and their

Compare And Contrast Nuclear Fission And Nuclear Fusion
Even though nuclear fusion and nuclear fission sound alike, they re very different from each other.
Nuclear fusion is when two or more nuclei combine to making a new element with a higher atomic
number, and nuclear fission is the act of splitting a large atom into two or more smaller, lighter
atoms. Nuclear fissionreleases heat energy by splitting the atoms, and nuclear fusion makes heat
energy by taking smaller atoms and combining them together to make a bigger one. Nuclear fission
usually doesn t occur in nature, and is mostly used in nuclear powerplants and stuff like that, while
nuclear fusion occurs in nature all the time; such as stars and the sun. Nuclear fusion is basically
electricity that we use in our everyday lives. Nuclear

Ageing Is Not A Disease, And Should Not Be Dreaded
Age comes with so many challenges including development of conditions that affect the well
being of the ageing individuals. There are so many people who would love to remain youthful,
but this is beyond the control of anybody. However, ageing is not a disease, and should not be
dreaded. In fact, old people still have so much to offer to the society including the experiences they
have accumulated over the years, the wisdom they have learned, and sometimes they even have
valuable skills which they can pass on to the younger generations. Older people have so much
information within them and all that one needs to do is to consult their knowledge and learn from
those experiences. The World Health Organization states that, The ageingof the... Show more

Unfortunately, retirement means an individual has to change the lifestyle the individual has been
used to, especially because most people start working at the age of early twenties (WHO, 2012 ).
A strain on pension and social security systems, and the fact that individuals are no longer having
the regular income they are used to earning despite the fact that they still want to maintain the
same lifestyle that they have been enjoying when working. These changes are more likely the
causes of stress and even depression if they are not handled in the right manner. In fact, it is
noteworthy to understand that for the ageing to retire gracefully and not face those challenges,
they need to plan their retirement way before they are officially retired so that when they stop
working, they already have a plan which will not disrupt them so much from their activities, and,
therefore, they are able to transition to a new lifestyle easily. In so doing, the ageing population
also avoids developing diseases associated with depression, which could make them lose
functionality in the society.

How Night by Elie Wiesel Helped People Connect to the...
Words, the written language, a way to express feelings, emotions, experiences, and all that your
mind can recall from life or fantasy. Although many have heard of the terrors faced by the Jews
in countries that were under German control during World War II, few have stepped back and
really thought about the weight of what really happened to the people in the concentration camps.
I believe Night helped people connect to what really happened. This is an actual person s life,
their story, poured out onto pages that reflect not only facts but his deepest pains and fears. While
recounting his physical discomforts and many hardships, he also gives a viewpoint for our
imaginations. The best way I have been introduced to how it would even remotely... Show more

This level of rich memory relates the reader to the experience, making it easier for that person to
remember the events being explained. As once said by George Santayana, Those who cannot
remember the past are condemned to repeat it. With all the people who endured this first hand
gone, it is a rare and wondrous thing to behold an entire story from beginning to end by someone
who lived it first hand. Of course, the story not only tells us about Elie s tragedies, but also his
people as a whole, as well as, giving other short stories of how the calamity affected other
individuals around him. Such as, on page 103, when he is talking about the collective death cry
on the wagons, Someone had just died. Others, close to death, imitated his cry. And their cries
seemed to come from beyond the grave....The death rattle of an entire convoy with the end
approaching. Such a dark and gruesome depiction of a wave of death sweeping over so many
people around him. This vivid description as well as many others help bring to light the diverse
stories going on. Elie was definitely not the only one being exposed to the contention. There were
so many besides him that suffered. This is one way, I believe, that the author meant to cite that.
Another reason this account of Elie s memories is to see the differences and similarities between
various stories told by many people is to have a

Persuasive Essay On How To Build A Fire
Have you ever went camping with friends or family and admired the welcoming campfires that
were built? Roasting marshmallows, sharing stories, or just sitting and absorbing the nature
around you are just a few of the many enjoyable activities that can be done with a bonfire!
However, what may look like a simple set up might be more complex than one would assume. In
fact, there are several steps a person should follow when constructing a campfire. Practicing these
instructions can not only lead to a more successful, thriving bonfire, but can also guide you to
becoming more safe and aware. When my dad taught me how to build a fire, it was an overall
bonding experience. He was patient with me through the many failed attempts and constantly
reminded me that safety was the most important factor. The skills that I learned from him will
continue to come in handy any time my friends or family want to gather around a campfire. The
first step that is pretty essential in building a campfire, that several people may overlook, is
finding a suitable, safe place to have one. If there is a fire ring that is already present, then even
better. Try to look for an open space away from buildings or other things that are easily
flammable. Ask yourself a few questions before you start: Are campfires allowed in this area? Are
the weather conditions up to par? (It shouldn t be too windy or rainy.) Is the site properly
prepared? Lastly, do you have fire safety equipment? Such as a fire extinguisher

Compare And Contrast African Slavery Vs American Slavery
First, African slavery was very different than normal slavery, like in America before it was
abolished. In Africa, slaves had very different opportunities compared to the slaves of another
culture. Slaves in Africa could (depending on the location) be integrated into the slave owner s
family, or even obtain positions of military or administrative importance. Also, in early African
culture, slaves were used as a way to determine land ownership. Before colonial officials imposed
European law, African tribes distributed land based on the amount of laborers available to the
family, thus beginning regular raids on other tribes to obtain slaves and by extension: land. African
slaves became a major export of Africaas well. Arabs and Europeans began trading for slaves,
heavily affecting the economy of Africa. From this it is easily seen that African slaverywas very
different compared to the slavery of other cultures.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

not limited to: Whites, Blacks, Muslims, Christians, and Pagans. As Europe became a maritime
nation, the slave trade was greatly changed. European s decided they would no longer have their
own people as slaves, and began taking slaves from Africa along with the other nations of the time.

  • 2. National Parks Across The Planet Wonder, vastness, unsullied nature, and untouched beauty: all words that describe national parks across the planet. One such place, a series of islands about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, became officially recognized as an Ecuadorian National Park in 1959, and later a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 (Galapagos Islands Geology Volcanoes, n.d.). None other than the Galapagos Islands themselves, the park is perhaps one of, if not the most captivating National Parks on the globe. When one hears Galapagos Islands, the ecological diversity is often the first association brought to mind. While it holds true that the islands contain possibly one of the most diversified bionomics in the world, its geological history is just as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Ecuadorian archipelago sits entirely on the Nazca tectonic plate, a continental plate constantly subjected to volcanic and tectonic activity. While the plate endlessly drifts east southeast, it encounters the Galapagos hot spot, a source of intense and relentless volcanic activity in the ocean. According to White (1997), large columns of torrid rock approximately 100 kilometers in diameter, called mantle plumes, emerge from the mantle at a rate of an estimated ten centimeters per year. A peculiar interaction occurs with these plumes; once they rise from the lower asthenosphere to the upper lithosphere, the plumes actually melt by approximately twenty percent from the sheer force of pressure decompression rather than heat, as the lithosphere is cooler than the asthenosphere. This melting begins at roughly 150 kilometers in depth, and continues rising until the process is halted by reaching the lithosphere; the resulting magma rises into collections in and immediately beneath the lithosphere, named magma chambers. When the conditions are ideal, these chambers can release their magma onto the surface in an explosive attempt to equalize density and pressure, colloquially known as a volcanic eruption (White, 1997). Consecutive eruptions like these over hundreds of thousands of years cause the actual formation of a volcano; furthermore, over time, magma can crystallise in the magma chamber causing a thickening of the chamber, and thus an addition ... • 3. Japanese Culture In Japan Social Analysis Japanese culture is a blend of modern western culture and traditional Asian culture (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan, n.d.) And great value is placed on the need for harmony, consensus decision making and social conformity and especially close co operation between government and private enterprise, this emphasis on consensus will need to be taken into account in business negotiations (Griffin Pustay, 2015, p. 61) Positive market aspects are Japan s high! Education levels, with universal elementary education and literacy (Abe, 2013; Institute of Export, 2015). However, problem workforce skill levels should the need arise to employ local labour with 83% of employers having problems filling vacancies; these positions include sales representative, engineers and IT staff (Manpower Group, 2015). This may require sourcing staff from Australia. Should this be the case it will be necessary to apply for a certificate of eligibility and a visa for periods of 3 months, up to 5 years, processing for this usually takes 3 months (Embassy of Japan in Australia, 2014). The population is ageing and increasingly health conscious, which provide greater scope for products promoting health benefits such as SAFCOl ready to eat tuna meals (Austrade, 2016). Japan has a sizeable middle class with the affluence to afford imported food products. (Griffin Pustay, 2015, p. 191). • 4. Theodore Roosevelt s Shaping of America Essay Theodor Roosevelt, our 26th president, was a gruff politician who had a huge impact on America. He is known for his accomplishments in the political, social, and business world during the Progressive Era. His accomplishments helped shape America, and because of this influence, he is one of the faces found on Mount Rushmore. Theodor Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858, in New York, New York. As a child he was frail and timid, and as a result, most of his education was through tutors in his home before he went to college. Around the age of 13 he became determined to learn how to defend himself, because while on a stage coach two other boys started to beat him up and he could not defend himself. He knew that his efforts in learning how... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On one occasion when he was against a bill to make manufacturing cigars in one s home illegal. He however promptly changed his mind when he saw the conditions of the homes. The tobacco was stowed about everywhere, alongside the foul bedding, and in a corner where there were scraps of food. His disgust and shock validated his changing vote. During Roosevelt s third term, he received a telegram that stated that both his wife and mother were very ill. They both died within hours of each other. In his diary, Roosevelt drew an X across most of the page, and wrote, The light has gone out of my life. After this tragic loss, he decided to go to a ranch that he had purchased in 1883 and become a rancher. Unfortunately, Roosevelt was not taken seriously by the locals as a real rancher, because they thought of him as a city New Yorker, who was not tough enough for the Dakota Badlands. He had to initially put up with their ridicule. But in the end, he proved them all wrong. On one occasion, he apprehended two criminals and watched them for hours before the authorities came. A newspaper wrote Theodore is a Dakota Cowboy. When he first went on the range, the cowboys took him for a dude, but there is no man who inspires such enthusiastic regard among them as he. Shortly after his return to New York, Roosevelt was elected governor. Later, Roosevelt was chosen as the running mate to William ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. W. E. B. Dubois Cultural Context I decided to focus my discussion on W.E.B. Du Bois and the cultural context at the time. W.E.B. Du Bois or William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was a teacher, editor, author, and philosopher. Unfortunately, he missed Martin Luther King s I Have a Dream speech, and he died on the eve of that speech. Du Bois worked with a lot of organizations like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He was born in 1868 in Massachusetts. Five years ago, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation which made slavery illegal in America. Du Bois attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. He went to college in 1885 while times were difficult. These times were tough because the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) tried to rebuild white... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Du Bois wanted to fight racial inequality and unfair treatment, so he fought by teaching and educating people. He thought educating people would cause people to realize the problems of discrimination and unfair treatment by color. Moreover, education would change the minds and souls of people. Due to the historical events, the KKK, and racial inequities, this drove Du Bois to write The Souls of Black Folk. The Souls of Black Folk focuses on the color line problem, how African Americans suffer like their low financial success, and racial inequities. The Souls of Black Folk is one of Du Bois s most famous and influential books. Du Bois s ultimate goal in The Souls of Black Folk is to promote the concept of human brotherhood. Also, his goal in that book is to not have a color line because it breaks human relationships and societies apart. An interesting fact about Du Bois is he was the first African American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard. After multiple school degrees, he set off writing and publishing multiple works like The Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study, The Souls of Black Folk, The Comet, and ... • 6. Long Beach Appraisal Everyone involved in selling and buying of real estate in Long Beach has some unconditional interest in appraisals. The result of an appraisal has something or the other to do with what the buyer, seller, realtor, and lender are expecting out of the sale. If a property has been valued quite low by the appraiser, the seller would then be needed to lower the market price he or she had set. If we consider a Realtor in this case, it would mean a significant dip in commission. On the other hand, a high valuation of a property may result in the buyer having to pay a lot more than its true worth. In this situation, a realtor may receive high or low commission, depending on the final selling/buying price of the property. With these situations, you... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If you are considering to hire someone to do this job, you should make sure that you approach a local appraiser, having a number of appraisal years in his locker. If you reach someone who has recently received the license, you may have to bear some frustrations in getting what you expect. However, an experienced appraiser will save you from having sleepless nights. This is why you should always work with an appraiser who comes with all the credentials. The appraiser may be hired, either by the buyer or the seller; for different reasons, of course. A buyer would hire an appraiser to have an accurate assessment of property, its price, and mortgage options. On the other hand, a seller would do the hiring to know the value of his or her property. Based on the valuation and the areas of improvement, the seller can make amendments to his or her property, if viable. This will help the seller in coming up to a maximum price that he or she can get after selling his or her property. The seller would work to get the most of his or her property and the buyer would look to pay as least as possible. In all of this, it is very important not to forget the real reason why appraisals are done. An appraisal report features many things, most of which are very hard to understand for a common buyer or seller. Good appraisers will ensure that they go that extra mile and make buyers or sellers understand things that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Snow Man By Wallace Stevens In The Snow Man by modernist poet Wallace Stevens, the idea is brought up that one must have a certain mind to see things a certain way; in his poem, Stevens explores the idea of perception, challenging the realities commonly seen, with one common scene often interpreted. The poem describes a scene in the midst of winter s gloom, then shifts into the perceptionof this scene, saying how in reality there is no gloom. Stevens mentions how one must have a mindof winter (line 1) to refuse internal psychological interpretations on the outside world. But at the same time, he is leaning to the other side, saying how difficult something like that is. In an earlier line, Stevens says to regard (line 2), but he laters shifts to behold. (line 5) The word behold implies awe, and the words that follow it, the junipers shagged with ice/ the spruces rough in the distant glitter/ of the January sun; (lines 5 7) seem to evoke a sense of melancholy. He follows that set up with a sort of obvious fact tone in his next line by saying and not to think of any misery in the sound of the wind. (lines 7 8) Stevens is stating that one must have a mind of winter, or a mind that is like winter, in order to look at all the desolation, and not think of precisely that. But he uses language that sets up a very lonely mood, which is the reality of what he is trying to say. As something is seen and perceived, minds interpret it accordingly to what they feel; vise versa, something commonly associated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He grew up on the homestead, where he learned to love the wilderness. In 1750, when Daniel was fifth teen years old, his parents decided to move from the homestead. They moved to western North Carolina where they could own more land. After his family moved, other noble families like the Maugridge and DeTurks bought the land and lived there. In this story Anita Diamant gives a voice to Simeon and Levi s sister, Dinah, who is known as the woman who was raped then later loved by Shechem. After Shechem s injustice of Dinah, Shechem and his city were slaughtered by Simeon and Levi. Both biblepassages and the novel The Red Tentprovide some similar and some different characteristic traits for Simeon and Levi which in turn allows the readers to take away and learn more from the Midrash story. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Simeon and Levi grew through both their experiences of violence and faith. Eventually they repented their sins they brought upon Joseph, their brother. The most significant aspect of their personalities is their zeal for cruelty and violence. In the Testament of the Patriarchs, it is understood that God came to both the Simeonites and Levites discussing their enthusiasm for violence. Eventually, even though warned by Simeon, the Simeonites could not overcome their obsession of cruelty and violence. Therefore, the Simeonites numbers eventually decreased and they were finally absorbed into the Judahites. The Levites, on the other hand, overcame their zeal for cruelty and violence by focusing their fixation towards God thereby becoming a holy priesthood. Through passages in the bible and the Testament of the Patriarchs, Simeon and Levi were characterized as cruel, rash and violent leaders who were considered righteous in their vengeance of Shechem. But they made many dishonest and immoral decisions such as enslaving Joseph. Even though they made these dishonest decisions, the Levites were able to sustain and thrive as a holy priesthoodНѕ whereas the Simeonites were unable to change their ways, this eventually led to their obsolescence. • 11. Gung Ho Movie Analysis Gung Ho Movie 1.What is your opinion of Hunt Stevenson? What kind of leader was he? Was he effective? In my opinion, Hunt Stevenson, is a good leader. In the situation of the car plant, a cross cultural leadership was needed no only because of the Japanese but for the expectations that the owner had from the American employees. In order for the American workers to understand and adapt to the expectations, they needed a leader who was able to make them see that they were expected to work in a different way. This is a very difficult task, and Hunt Stevenson was able to do this, which in my opinion is admirable. In addition, this could have been a very stressful situation, but he managed to carry out the project in the best possible way. In... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This company was the main source of jobs in this town. In one part of the movie, Hunt Stevenson girlfriend mentions how other businesses were shutting down after the car plant was closed. Therefore, this shows how there was a decline in the economy of the town. This was a chain reaction. The explanation to these collapse of the economy of Haleyville is that since income went down, the purchasing power of the citizens was not the same, and other businesses could no longer operate without customers. 5.What were some of your favorite humorous parts of the movie? I found really funny when Oishi realized that they were going to shut down the car plant. He went to the river and Hunt Stevenson though he was going to drown himself. Also, whenever the employees were encouraged to do some exercise routines before starting to work. Another funny part was when Buster came back to the car plant, he was walking so funny and felt so powerful I guess hahaha! 6.Give me your overall thought of the movie and tell me if you think the movie is still relevant today I personally believe that this is a great movie. • 12. Female Genitalia Mutilation ( Fgm ) Female Circumcision: Female Genitalia Mutilation As a nursing student in my first experience working in a labor ward, I witnessed a lady birthing a baby with part of the birth canal scarred and narrow due to her circumcision at puberty. To say that the birthing process was hard to watch is an understatement. As the labor progressed with no sight of the baby coming out naturally, she was offered a C section, which she vehemently turned down. She said, I don t want to be the joke of my peers. I have to do it like others did it. Watching this, made me more curious and passionate to find the origin of this practice and hopefully, educate the practitioners leading to its eradication. Some may argue that the after effects of female genital mutilation (FGM) are not new. I hope that my research into the origin of this practice will help the public health community understand how it can help these women and eradicate this practice. For everything that has a beginning, most of the time, has an end. Delancer (2015) presenting a speech to The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) on traditions that hurt women states that: Most women in developing countries are unaware of their basic human rights. It is this state of ignorance which ensures their acceptance and consequently, the perpetuation of harmful traditional practices affecting their well being and that of their children. Researchers also believed that there should be one or more mutations involve in the transition of bird tails from long theropod tails to short avian tails with distal pygostyle. Changes in cis regulatory regions (CREs) were most likely responsible for this phenotypic change. Despite the lack of dinosaur DNA, researchers were still able to examine gene pathways that generated dinosaur traits through an evolutionary developmental biology, also known as the evo devo approach. In order to narrow down the list of genes that may have been modulated by mutation, they looked at the genetic analysis of the mouse, because mouse has the greatest accumulated data on mutations among all other vertebrate. From the MGI Jackson Laboratories database, only two mutants, the Hoxb13 and Slx4 knockout mice, among the 159 mutants with affected tails have a modest increased in the numbers of caudal vertebrae. The total revenue (TR) to total cost (TC) approach relies on the fact that profit equals revenue minus that cost and focuses on maximizing the greatest difference between TR and TC. Total Revenue (TR): Is the income made from the sales of a given product. (McConnell., 2011) This total does not take include the cost of producing the product. To calculate the TR of a product, you must first multiply the sales price of the widget by the quantity sold. TR = Sales Price * Quantity Sold Total Cost (TC): The sum of fixed cost and variable cost at each level of output. (McConnell., 2011) TC = TFC + TVC (Total cost = Total Fixed Cost + Total Variable Cost) Graphically speaking the total revenue curve rises, but at a decreasing rate the curve turns into more of a horizontal line. Ultimately, total revenue begins to decrease. a2. The marginal revenue (MR) to marginal cost (MC) approach uses marginal analysis by comparing (MR) and (MC). Marginal Cost (MC): The change in total cost as the output level changes one unit. (McConnell., 2011) Marginal Revenue (MR): The change in total revenue from the sale of one additional level of output. (McConnell., 2011) MR = (change in total revenue) / (change in quantity/output) or MR = ∆TR / ∆Q Since Company A is a price taker, the sale of each additional widget adds to total revenue the same amount that is equal to the selling price. Shakespeare s Sister Virginia Woolf in the chapter Shakespeare s Sister from A Room of One s Own states that women in the 19th and 20th century did not have the same privileges and opportunities that men got in their lifetime, thus not being able to explore their passions of writing and art, rather being the slave of any boy whose parents forced a ring upon her finger (694). She uses this to argue why women are seen as inferior to men and that if women had had the same freedoms to live life contrary to what society insists, they would be able to write like Shakespeare and have an equal playing field to men. Woolf states: Because the mind of an artist, in order to achieve the prodigious effort of freeing whole and entire the work that is in him, must be incandescent, like Shakespeare s mind, (703). By this she means that men had the freedom to write, they did not have society discouraging them, or putting roadblocks in their way. Women could not think for themselves because society was constantly telling them what they should do and who they should marry, and encouraging them to be mothers, rather than leaders. Having to live up to society s expectations certainly did not let women have an incandescent mind. Woolf also states: The world did not say to her as it said to them, Write if you choose; it makes no difference to me. The world said with a guffaw, Write? What s the good of your writing (701). This lack of encouragement for women made it difficult for them to achieve their dreams and be able to showcase their talents to the world. This false notion of men being intellectually superior to women was a widely accepted idea in the 19th century. Woolf explains, there was an enormous body of masculine opinion to the effect that nothing could be expected of women intellectually (702). By this, one could infer that women were only seen for their beauty, and as wives. The world was judged and found wicked, and so it was drowned. A new start is to be made. There are two flood stories like this from ancient times: the Holy Bible s account and the Greek myth. Both are strikingly similar, in that the worldwas punished for its wickedness by being flooded. In each of the flood stories, the cause of the flood, the circumstances, and the aftermath are very nearly the same. The world was wicked. And so the world had to be punished. In the Bible s account, all of mankind was corrupt. Man s imagination and heart was incessantly evil. It grieved God s heart, because He had created these people, and they turned from Him and... God wanted mankind to continue, but those that were on the earth at that time were so corrupt, they needed to be destroyed. In the Greek myth, mankind was again found to be wicked. This wickedness was exemplified by Lycaon, a tyrant king who scoffed at Zeus s power and attempted to kill him in his sleep in order to see if he really was a god or not. Lycaon also killed a man and butchered him, putting him in a stew served to Zeus. Unlike God, who is omniscient and knew the people s hearts, Zeus had come to visit Lycaon in human form, in order to see how wicked he really was. Naturalists utilize mundane monotonous lives and reveal the heroine within, when all (environment, opportunities, intuition) seems out of control. This type of literature was found relatable during the rapid urbanization and naturalization after the Civil War, where many in bustling developing cities suffered from poverty and its poorly prevented consequences. In these naturalistic writing of Zola, there is also much emphasis of people working together in groups, the literary references are greatly due to the labor wars that were taking place during the turn of the century. Zola also took frankness about sexual functions much further than the early Realists had dared; and it is this, combined with a pervasive pessimism about humanity, which chiefly characterizes the Naturalist novel (Brians). Americans were attracted to this relatable coarse naturalism, more than that of realism. Though realism and naturalism were introduced through the protest against romanticism, without these tragic tales of fiction, the stories we know today, such as the all American detective story would not be a part of even our most elementary entertainment. Naturalism s main attraction to the American people was due to the timeframe in which it introduced its morals and themes to the population. The repugnant forces and perplexing relationships in life are represented through naturalist literature. Plots in literary naturalism follow a prominent decline. • 39. Biblical Allegory In The Edenian In a world where popular culture is ever changing, the Bible continues to provide inspiration for many cultural texts. The practice of religion has always been tied to popular music in a symbiotic way (Rauhut, 2017), and representations of the Bible remain prolific in popular music today. Sara Bareilles is an American pop rock and soul artist, who achieved mainstream success with her 2007 song (I m not gonna write you a) love song. Her third album The Blessed Unrest was released in 2013, and features the song Eden (Bareilles, Sara Hales, Matt. 2013), a song that contains heavy biblical connotations. The lyrics of Eden are symbolic of the traditional story of Adam and Evein Genesis 2 and 3 from the Christian Old Testament, and demonstrate how music continues to be influenced by the Bible in the 21st Century. The song Eden offers an excellent example of the way biblical allegory can be used to retell stories from the Bible through music, however it also shows how popular culture provides alternative interpretations of biblical texts as well. In this essay, I will first explore the world in the text through an in depth analysis of the biblical allegory within the lyrics of Eden, to show how it conveys the traditional story from Genesis 2 and 3. I will then go on to consider the world behind the text; discussing how Eden is inspired by Bareilles own life, and the way artistic decisions made within the song differ from the interpretation of the traditional biblical text. ...
