He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
6. Methods of seed Production
Carrot seeds can be produced in two different methods: “root-to-
seed” or “seed-to-seed”.
Seed-to-seed method:
Carrot seeds are directly sown in field and
mature roots are produced. The mature roots are retained in the same
field to grow further and produce inflorescences, flowers and seeds. In
this method, carrots can be sown as densely as for root production.
The retained roots cannot be uprooted, inspected and selected. Instead,
inspection is limited to rouging of plants with different foliage.
7. Root –to-seed method:
Carrot seeds are sown in the first season to
produce mature roots (stecklings) on a smaller land. Stecklings should
be dug out, select the healthy and true to type roots for high quality
seed. The stecklings are prepared by cutting one-third shoot and one-
fourth to half of root. After preparation of stecklings, planting is done
in well prepared soil at distance of 30 cm between plants and 60-90 cm
between rows. Just after transplanting, irrigate the fields for better
establishment of the stecklings.

14. Pollination:
Carrot is cross pollinated vegetable.
Individual carrot flowers are normally protandrous and much cross-
pollination occurs between plants in a seed crop.
Honeybees are efficient pollinators of carrots and placing beehives in
seed production fields can enhance seed yield and quality.

16. 1. Before uprooting of the roots: Roguing should be done on the basis
of leaf characters.
2. Before transplanting of the roots: Roguing should be done on the
basis of root characters ( shape, size and color).
3. Flowering and fruit stage: Roguing should be done on the basis of
leaf and umbel character, umbel emergance and color of stalk and
diseased plants.
4. Before harvesting: On the basis of maturity period and diseased
plants the final roguing should be done.

17. A minimum of four inspections should be made.
The first at early (20-30 days after sowing) stage.
The second at the selection of roots just before transplanting.
The third at flowering and fruiting stage.
The fourth before harvesting.

18. Isolation distance
The minimum isolation distance required for carrot seed production
is at least 1000 m for foundation and 800 m for certified seed
production.
19. The best time for harvesting is when the secondary umbels are
fully ripe and tertiary heads are beginning to turn brown. The
crop ripens unevenly. Seed is commonly harvested by
handpicking. 2-3 pickings may, often to be necessary . After
drying, the heads are threshed and cleaned. After cleaning, the
seed is rubbed by hand to remove the bristles on the surface
and graded by means of sifters and sieves. Store seeds in
polyethene coated bags in dry places.
