Global trends in social entrepreneurship discusses the global rise of social entrepreneurship. It begins by providing background on Fredrik Björk and Malmö University's work in social innovation. It then defines social entrepreneurship as "entrepreneurship with a social purpose" that historically focused on helping vulnerable groups but now sees social enterprises adopting business approaches. The document outlines three phases of social entrepreneurship discourse and then discusses current global trends, such as cross-sector collaboration and sustainability, as well as focus on impact measurement, the role of technology, supportive legal frameworks, and the growing social entrepreneurship ecosystem.

The Community Portal is the main entry point for the EAI Community and aggregates content from different SIBs. Current features of the portals allow SIB chairs to manage their groups and members to post content. Future integrations are planned to add social networking and online forums to further support collaboration within the EAI community.

Common factors in successful crowdsourcing include clear goals, showing progress, and acknowledging volunteer contributions. Libraries have opportunities to leverage crowdsourcing to improve and add value to their collections by engaging communities.

Bryan Loar presented on how blogs can be used as forums for collaboration, knowledge repositories, and efficient professional development tools. Some key statistics about blogs are that 57 million adults read blogs daily, 12 million adults maintain blogs, and over 175,000 blogs are created every day. Blogs have evolved from online journals and places for self-proclaimed nerds to vehicles for collaboration and community building in organizations like universities and libraries.

1) The document discusses opportunities and challenges of open access (OA) for developing regions, drawing from the author's experience with CLACSO, a social science council in Latin America. 2) It outlines how OA has provided greater visibility for knowledge produced in local languages and publications in developing regions. However, barriers include access issues, reliance on impact factors for research evaluation, and "author pays" OA models. 3) Recommendations include defining knowledge as a commons shared by all, ensuring dissemination of research results is publicly funded, reviewing research metrics, and supporting South-South cooperation on OA through policies, indicators, and interoperable repositories.

Ontarians visit their public libraries more than any other cultural, recreational, or commercial activity. Public libraries in Ontario average 198,630 visits per day - more daily visits than all major sports teams combined and more than foreign tourists visiting all of Canada. With over 1,157 branches serving 99.34% of Ontario's population, public libraries are truly the most widely used and accessible community hubs across the province.

CCCOER April 27 Advisory Meeting

The CCCOER Advisory Meeting covered the following topics: 1) Announcements about $100 million in grants for free community college programs and a survey on distance learning adoption and barriers. 2) A recap of the OEC Global conference, including a panel on OER degrees and elections to the board. OEC Global 2017 will be in Cape Town, South Africa. 3) A presentation from Noba Project on their open psychology textbook and author community, and how they have helped students at Chemeketa Community College. 4) Upcoming CCCOER webinars on faculty perspectives on OER and open pedagogy, and spring conferences where members are presenting on open education.

Libraries in China have seen a rapid growth in Intellectual Property Information Service (IPIS) centers over the past few years, with over 100 established. These centers were encouraged by the Chinese government to support innovation and patent applications. They provide services like patent searches, analysis of patent trends, and support for industries. While still developing, they represent a promising new direction for academic research libraries in China. Compared to the US, where similar centers have existed longer in libraries but not transformed them, the growth of IPIS centers could impact the transformation of Chinese academic libraries.

When faculty start using OER, one of the most exciting opportunities that the open license affords is for faculty to customize their courses to fit the needs of their students. In this discussion, we will explore some of the theory and practice around designing engaging, accessible, and inclusive OER courses. We will discuss how using OER can enable faculty to embrace good design principles for student-centered instruction in fully online courses or face-to-face courses, augmented with online components.
