License AnalysisLicenses
• A single license scheme won´t be applied since some of the set of
components included in EMMA platform had been developed following
different open licensing principles and schemas
– Open Source conflicting licenses: GPL components with other components or
frameworks based on OS licenses like MIT or BSD
– EMMA solution (platform + components) will be distributed under Apache v2
license and some components will be released independently considering
their initial license restrictions
• MOOCs: all providers agreed on using Creative Common v3 licensing SA-
BY (share alike and attribution); some MOOCs will be released with
additional clauses NC (non-commercial)

No need to insist on this, you already know it quite well at this stage , it’s just a quick reminder…
The European Multiple MOOC Aggregator called EMMA for short, is a 30 months pilot action supported by the European Union under the CIP framework programme.
It is a hosting system which provides multilingual access to European MOOCs with facilities for Personalized learning
Offer MOOCs provided by accredited institutions from around Europe with different teaching methodologies and learning design approaches
Offer an extensive and multilingual transcription/translation system
Offer an extensive monitoring system
I am sure that you are familiar with this figure, which describes the EMMA platform components and some of the potential exploitable assets. The platform is composed of three sets of components:
The first set facilitates the implementation of the learning design and creation of MOOCs in different languages.
The second set allows participants in the MOOC learning process, let be students or facilitators, to carry out those activities and actions described in the learning design of the course.
The third one facilitates the monitoring of the whole educational process, its progress and the generation of recommendations for improving the process as well as for enhancing the support offered to participants in the MOOC learning process by the rest of EMMA sets of components.
The first set is represented by the Authoring component and the Translation and Transcription services.
The second set is represented by PLE (Personal Learning Environment) and Social (and collaborative support).
And the third set is represented by the Data tracing component, the Learning Locker as repository of the interaction data and the Learning dashboards in charge of visualising useful data about the current status of the learning process, recommendations to improve it and to enhance the personalisation of learning experiences.
A single license scheme cannot be applied since some components have been developed following different open licensing principles and schemas and this limits the way the software can be packaged and released. The IPR analysis has determined under which license bundles of components can be released and what are the alternatives for those that cannot be directly released (links to the owner, etc.).
Licensing schemas for MOOCs, all providers agreed on using Creative Common licensing SA-BY (share alike and attribution) but there are different positions regarding the clauses NC-ND (non-commercial- no derivatives) to apply in such licensing schema. During the analysis we studied which are the most suitable clauses to apply and the exceptions or limitation to consider in order ensuring the exploitation of MOOCs in the different scenarios.
The European education landscape differs from the North American — with generally greater access to higher education and at lower cost — which means that definition of EMMA BM is inspired by existing business models in NA, but has created a variation to better tailor it to specifically European educational realities considering other European MOOC platform revenue streams.
The use of FLOSS is considered because of the licensing schemas defined to release the different exploitable assets. Free/Libre and Open Source Software.
Iversity uses 3 different types of study tracks:
Audit track (free or charge) provides Statement of Participation
Certificate track (with online proctored exams- and fee payment) provides Certificate of Accomplishment and the Certificate Supplement
ECTS Track (official European university courses with in-situ exams- and fee payment) provides Certificate of Accomplishment and the Certificate Supplement.
Futurelearn: Accreditation is delegated to the MOOC providers and all the process of granting/payment for the credits is conducted by the institution providing and managing the course. (https://about.futurelearn.com/terms/ section 5. Content providers 5.2 a) b)
FUN: They currently offer MOOCs for free but realized that paid certifications, variations of MOOCs in form of SPOCs (small private online courses) could be 2 important sources to ensure the sustainability of the FUN initiative.
http://www.letudiant.fr/educpros/actualite/mooc-fun-mais-bientot-payants.html
A product-service system (PSS), also known as a function-oriented business model
Use Oriented PSS: This is a PSS where ownership of the tangible product is retained by the service provider, who sells the functions of the product, via modified distribution and payment systems, such as sharing, pooling, and leasing.
2-strand approach: The first one will focus on sustainability efforts through the diffusion and knowledge sharing, further technical developments and use of EMMA platform and services to support the deployment of MOOCs provided by members of the association. The second one, is a more open approach to provide EMMA platform and services to all MOOC providers to support the deployment of their course during a period of time
Community: Main requirements for MOOC providers: Number of learners to attract x courses: 900 to ensure the economic viability of MOOC provision.
Different membership categories and fees: For MOOC providers a percentage to be applied to cover the cost of proving basic EMMA services and it will consider the aggregation of the size of organization, consortium member, etc.
The baseline fee will include the previous fee + a value to cover supporting services. In this schema it is also considered that MOOC providers will use Certifications as means to ensure the sustainability of their efforts in creating, maintaining, delivering the Course. Technical contributors: Their membership fees will be very reduced since they will contribute to the dissemination and further development of the services.
Pay per usage modality: Main requirements for MOOC providers: Number of learners to attract x courses: 900 The total value of the fee will include the values to cover Basic and supporting services costs + X% that will ensure the fee of this modality will be higher than the Association membership fees. MOOC providers will use Certifications to ensure the sustainability of their efforts in creating, maintaining and delivering the Course.
We use the Business Model Canvas to represent all elements of the EMMA Business model:
Key Partners
Key activities based on the use of services/products derived from EMMA exploitable assets.
Key resources: Resources need to conduct Key activities to deliver EMMA value proposition
Value Proposition: The value EMMA offers to its target audience (clients)
Customer relationship: Defining services to support its clients
Distribution channels: Channels to reach EMMA clients
Customer segments: Defining EMMA audience
Cost structure: The main costs needed to cover to ensure the correct deployment of Key activities
Revenue streams: Means to ensure the payment for the EMMA value proposition
Next we present the details of those elements
EMMA provides access to inclusive, cross-cultural and multi-disciplinary learning based on MOOCs and it offers a holistic approach to support monitoring, improvement and enhancement of learning process.
Main elements:
EMMA Translation and transcription components provide support for individuals’ study needs ensuring the linguistic inclusiveness, allowing cross-cultural, multi-disciplinary learning. In addition, they potentially facilitate the integration of learners with certain deaf or hearing disabilities as part of the MOOC audience.
EMMA U-track + Learning Analytics dashboards + Performance tracker provide support for monitoring of the whole educational process, its progress and help to recommend improvements for the process as well as for enhancing the support offered to participants by the platform.
EMMA platform has two main types of clients:
learners (attending the MOOCs) [explain who they can be] and
MOOC providers (teachers facilitating the course) [current MOOC providers and EMMA partners, but can be any European organization]
Thus, EMMA services are tailored for these two audiences. Next we present those services
CPD = Continuous Professional Development
Having in mind the set of key activities defined in the EMMA BM, EMMA offers 3 types of services
A Basic package of services: Those that support the creation and deployment of MOOCs
Extra services: Those that will enhance the functionalities offered by the basic package
Supporting services: Set of horizontal services that will ensure that EMMA will be able to provide previous sets of services.
* Offered directly to Learners
CPD= Continuous Professional development
Services for learners:
The current EMMA course offering in terms of number of available courses (with different editions); themes addressed (main keywords- those are not the titles of the MOOCs); presented in multiple languages; at the end of the courses learners can apply for their participation certificates if they comply with the requirements of the course (completion of 70% or more of the course).
However, to continue delivering those MOOC has a cost. The next slides present an estimation of costs for the modifications & translations needed for the MOOC to be offered again, as well as HR costs for the for the support facilitation during the MOOC delivery.
The basic set of services offered by EMMA to the providers is composed of:
Course hosting (CMS, LMS)
Translation and Transcription
Monitoring and evaluation of courses
Dissemination/ Promotion of courses
Training for providers
EMMA is a pilot initiative running from February 2014 to July 2016, after July 2016 it cannot be guaranteed that MOOCs can be hosted for free
Next we describe main features of these services:
EMMA offers Hosting for your courses through the provision of a Content Management System (to create, update courses and its resources),
a Learning Management System (allows the management of users/learners, development of learning interactions according to the MOOC design, management of the different activities)
as well as a Helpdesk to support the work of the courses facilitators (teachers).
The automatic translation and transcription services facilitate MOOC providers to offer their courses in at least two languages.
Services work as a three-step process: first the automatic translation/transcriptions of the contents (texts, videos), second the human revision of those translation/transcriptions and third, the publication of the contents in the EMMA platform.
Currently there are 9 languages supported (list them) and if the provider needs another language EMMA team will analyse the feasibility of the implementation of its automatic translation/transcription systems.
These are screenshots of the facilities for human revision of the transcription and translation of the course contents in EMMA.
EMMA services for monitoring and evaluation are based on the use of active and passive analytics tools
Social surveys (active- require inputs from learners): Use of questionnaires embedded in the courses to make participants profiling (registration form, questionnaire on expectations) and satisfaction enquiries ( mini-questionnaires to gather learners impressions about the course).
The gathered information helps to better understand learners performance and to create recommendations to the course designers to improve the course contents and activities.
LA (passive tools –do not require learners’ input) allows to understand:
how MOOC participants learn, engage with the content and with the other participants;
how MOOC designers and facilitators can improve their course designs and pedagogies
LA was implemented in EMMA as an additional evaluation tool
To establish feedback loop between facilitators and participants in the form of dashboards;
To encourage evidence-based course design and pedagogical interventions
Teacher dashboard shows the course interactions (General overview of the course, number of interactions, average time spent and its most used resources, same information for the different Lessons of the course; Activity streams with detailed user interactions; Social Network analysis showing social interactions of learners according to the course design)
Learner dashboard shows his/her progress in the course, lessons, assignments
MOOCs, instructional design and pedagogical considerations: MOOC design options based on the introduction to instructional design and basic design requirements to take into account when preparing a MOOC
Learning Analytics: Why and how to include Learning Analytics tools in your MOOCs
Creation of multilingual MOOCs: How to take advantage of Translation and transcription support for the creation and deployment of your MOOCs
EMMA main features and services: How to create, manage and deploy your MOOCs using EMMA platform and services
MOOC Business Models: Which elements are needed to consider when designing the business model for your MOOC
We provide two types of trainings: Face-to face workshops held in collaboration with other TEL related and bigger events like the Summer School conducted last year in conjunction with the EATEL Summer School in Ischia.
Online trainings:
Video tutorial about EMMA platform and functionalities available as self-pace MOOC
Webinar series: This series features talks with experts in the MOOC world about various of the previous mentioned topics including trends in Europe, good practice in MOOC design, the use of social media and videos, creating multilingual MOOCs, learning analytics, etc. The webinar series also gives an opportunity to learn how the EMMA platform works and how you can design your own MOOC on EMMA
EMMA as provider of Continuous Professional development in collaboration with existing Learning Institutions (EDEN) EMMA provides basic services to support the deployment of existing EMMA MOOC (MOOC Assessment for Learning in practice ) provided by OUC. It will be a blended experience were the f2f part will take place during the EDEN conference, will be a boot camp experience to guide participants about the main features of the MOOC. The online part will be the deployment of the MOOC in EMMA. Attendees to the f2f will register in EMMA platform before the boot camp session.
The Conference programme is not available yet. http://www.eden-online.org/2016_budapest/about/#about
The whole questionnaire is uploaded in the SP (EMMA SERVICES CONCEPT TEST_clpn. doc)
