UX is way more than most people think. I believe that UX is a mindset that everyone should carry. This is how I approach UX, and think it's beneficial for everyone to know a process that works.
NOTE: This represents a talk I gave to some students embarking on a career in the UX field.
The presentation I used in the two sessions I did on introduction to UI/UX Engineering for undergraduate students in the Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna and the Trincomalee Campus, Eastern University.
An introduction to UX - User Experience.
Where does UX come from, what are the benefits of using it, and how can it be applied to day to day agency work?
Understanding the User Centred Design process and how UX is an integral part of every piece of digital work that is produced.
How to build a great user experience design portfolio and tell stories that get you hired. By Troy Parke and Patrick Neeman, presented at the Seattle Information Architecture & User Experience Meetup. Thanks Misty Melissa Weaver!
With all the talk about mobile and the internet of things, the next last frontier of user experience is something that has been there all along: enterprise. Most designers avoid it, but it’s the biggest opportunity for most designers. Your company should be investing in it because your competitors are, and recognizing the return on investment includes a more efficient workforce. Patrick Neeman will discuss why companies are paying attention and uncover opportunities in enterprise that user experience professionals should pay attention to over the next five years.
UX is omnipresent nowadays and will grow more and more the tool of innovation. Companies are becoming aware of the vitality of adopting this technology from the start. The Importance of UX is a presentation of how we as a UX Design Team implement UX in projects.
The Overview and basic guidance on User interface designing and User experience designing for designer and developers, The Difference in User Interface designing and User Experience Designing.
Not quite sure what UX/UI design are? You're not alone! This presentation answers some commonly asked questions regarding user experience and user interface.
This is a simple deck I put together to explain the components I believe are needed to create the best User Experience. This is also to help clarify what UX does and the sub-disaplines needed for the best result.

Hiring is hard.
The prospect of growing your team is exciting, but hiring the right person to grow your team is hard. But, that’s what we do as UX professionals, we tackle hard problems, and hiring the right person, can be thought of as just another one of those hard problems. So, before you jump to a conclusion and rush to post that job description to build your clone army, maybe you should pause, and (as you would do with any other design problem) make sure you have defined this hiring “problem” properly. In this talk, I reflect a bit on the nebulous term of user experience and the various skill sets that fit within its container, as well as step through some techniques to help you understand who you should really be looking for to grow your team.
My career path through images, like a visual resume.

Design a UX resume that will get you hiredKim Bieler
In this talk I illustrate with examples common pitfalls in UX resumes and give you insight into what the UX hiring manager is looking for. I show you how to make your resume truly stand out—not by expounding on your design philosophy or visualizing your career as an infographic—but by listing concrete accomplishments that demonstrate your business value.

In the world of tech capitals, a discussion about the great UX of a product, or the poor UI of a website is a common conversations we’ve all overheard. But what is exactly the difference between UI & UX design? Find out more in this presentation.

The world is changing rapidly. Technology evolves by leaps and bounds. As design practitioners and leaders, we must prepare ourselves to face the challenges that are presented to us in an evolving interactive landscape. We must be proactive in an increasingly connected, revolutionized and changing world. We need to understand how our roles need to change to face these new challenges. We have to develop our teams and foster the skills to solve these new problems. We need to help our teams to sharpen our focus towards creating the benefits for the people who use our products and services. As influencers and leaders, we must reflect, adapt and evolve to go to the future together.
As designers and agency owners we constantly manage the chaos of mastering a craft, being diverse, all the while trying to differentiate ourselves and adapting our processes and deliverables in an industry that changes at lightening speeds. As if the web wasn’t difficult enough, the advent of mobile product design and service design has created an entirely new industry and career paths, completely disrupting everything we knew about engagements, processes, deliverables, and expectations of design teams and agencies.
Face it, the industry is constantly changing and so should we. Let’s learn to embrace change and use it to intentionally position ourselves for constant reinvention and how to fashion the skills and environments necessary for creating meaningful products in the modern age and beyond.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

Editor's Notes
My mom wants me to work at Google, Apple or Facebook, just so she can explain what I do. This is confusing. We have to understand our audience and how to explain it, and that’s something we do a very poor job of. For example, my VP of Engineering isn’t going to understand this. We have to do a better job of explaining how he fit into companies.
Most companies don’t know what these roles are, and that’s really on us to explain the competencies. It’s also on us to evaluate our own skill sets to see where we fit. If you’re a “Web Designer,” you’re practicing all of these roles if you’re a one person show.
This really depends on how much of a foundation that you have in User Experience. Sometimes you need a little, sometimes you need a lot.
Many think the T-Skill Set means “hire unicorns.” T-skill Sets isn’t about having a bunch of skills, it’s about being able to learn new skills and adaptable in today’s environment. Empathy and understanding helps speed that learning process.
What’s cool about many people that have made the shift is they are using previously learned skills in their new career. The titles above show the diversity of many people I know that have made the move.
What’s cool about many people that have made the shift is they are using previously learned skills in their new career. The titles above show the diversity of many people I know that have made the move.
I was a print designer that made the move, so because of my publication experience, information architecture was something I easily picked up without knowing it.
Broke into the field as a web developer for intranets, became a researcher and then went back to school to get her Masters. Completed her bachelors in Visual Arts in 2008, six years after starting her web career.
Was a recruiter and starting taking on free projects to learn interaction design. She leveraged previous project management experience to move on to a manager role.
David leveraged his background in psychology as instructor to break into the web and lead agency teams for years. Recently made the jump to product at Google.
His career was about dirt until he went back to school to be a visual designer. That choice lead him to his current position, Associate Director of UX for Disney Parks and Resorts.
Good developers tend to be good architects, good writers and understand systems. Interaction Design, Interaction Design. Content Strategy is as much about governance and project management as it is about SEO and Content Development.
Spatial skills are instrumental in understanding design, and visual designers tend to be really good at telling stories through images and words. My mom, for example, is a very good illustrator and a fine artist, but a terrible layout artist.
I’ve technical writers more over. For example, I use my Content Strategist as a Product Designer, and they’ve done a pretty good job of coming up with the site map for a community at Apptio.
Managing and being an individual contributor are totally different things. Do you think that being a manager means controlling every pixel on the screen?
I’m INTP or INTJ on a given day. Both are systems thinkers or architects.
Do you have a five year plan? Have you identified focus areas of your career? If you were to leave your job today, did you do what you set out to do? Do you have a plan for where you are working now? Write the press release. It should lead to career goals.
Start volunteering for projects internally. Many designers broke in by doing small projects, transitioning from web developer or another role. Get a mentor in your company, and decide what your career path is. If there is no career path…
…Network, network, network. You have to get only one person to take a chance on you. Sometimes volunteer work leads to building a portfolio.
Do you own thing. Start your own idea, keep it small, and attract talent.
Christian has had a long career spanning both business and design successfully at places like Lowe’s and Channel Blade, and runs Giant Conference for designers on the East Coast. He uses that experience today to lead the team at Moz.
PhD in Experimental Psychology. Broke into user experience as a researcher, transitioned to design. Moved into teaching at University of Washington after nearly four years at Amazon Web Services.
Quality Assurance Engineer for Apple, Designer, Managing Designers at lynda.com, now a Product Manager at Sonos.
Lynn’s had a long career working at agencies, ending up as the CXO at McCann Erickson. Transitioned in house to Digital Marketing and uses her previous agency experience to manage them.
