Capacity Problems– Trade-off Consideration • Longer trains are more labour efficient • Shorter trains are more energy efficient • Pressure on the available line capacity of the network • • Higher capital and maintenance costs • The capital cost of doubling of an existing single tunnel • Higher service levels/ Consequential delays • Seating Capacity ratio of 1.50 vs. 1.3 vs Cost of service • Jumper/step back drivers could alleviate capacity problems on platform and line capacity.

Capacity – Assessment & Conclusions Rail • That 84 additional rolling stock coaches - required by 2026 • Longer platforms would be required at OR Tambo - 2013 • The Rosebank to Park Station single tunnel - full capacity by 2022 • The Sandton to Rosebank single tunnel, full capacity by 2026 • Staging capacity at maintenance depot in Midrand -2016 • The provision of additional line capacity between Marlboro portal and Sandton - required by 2029 • high level junction capacity at Pretoria station - reach capacity by 2018.

Assessment & Conclusions Stations, DFDS & Parking • The station design capacities under pressure • OR Tambo Station (from 2013), • Park station entries (2014), • Midrand Station entries (2015), • Sandton Station exits (2016). • Additional parking would be required at seven of the nine station in the next 5 years • Centurion (824),Rhodesfield (535), • Midrand (363), Pretoria (253), • Hatfield (187), Rosebank (148) and Park (70). • Adititonal busses and routes will be required by 2019

Capacity – Recommendations • 48 rolling stock coaches are procured starting 2015 • OR Tambo platform be extended - 2014 • Rosebank to Park and Sandton to Rosebank single tunnels be doubled - 2021 • New Depot Staging capacity at the depot in Midrand to be increased • Line capacity between Marlboro and Sandton is increased by 2018 • Investigate Centurion – Sandton short turn shuttle service • A full simulation study of the system to determine bottlenecks • Configure the seats in GPS train sets – 2014 • Shorter headway and the rolling stock implications

Capacity - Future actions • Network Assessment will be updated on an annual basis • Integrate land-use strategies for all stations • Determine the long-term GMA financial implications • A full transport integration strategy to be finalised • Prioritise the different activities and create a scheduled project plan • Finalise the rolling stock procurement tender • Finalise the physical infrastructure system optimisation • Finalise new DFDS routes and add new shuttle services • Develop a full integrated plan to incorporate NMT and UA
