A BRIEF HISTORY
• The movement to promote white canes as a symbol of blindness
began in Europe and spread in America by the Lion’s Club
International in the 1930s.
• The white color was regarded as being easier for motorists and
others to see alerting them that the individual holding the cane is
blind.
• Law was enacted to back it since that time in the United States
• October 15th was set aside as “ WHITE CANE SAFETY DAY” established
in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson as effort to raise awareness
of people who carry white cane.
Definition
• Mobility canes are a form of mobility aid that enable blind or
visually impaired people to go about their daily business when
out especially in unfamiliar areas.
• White mobility canes are used by many people who have a
visual impairment. Primarily, they aid a person to scan their
surroundings for obstacles or find orientation clues.
• They are also helpful for others such as road users in identifying
the person as vision impaired so that they can take appropriate
care and attention.
conti
• Mobility canes are often made from aluminium, graphite-
reinforced plastic or other fibre-reinforced plastic, and can come
with a wide variety of tips depending on the user’s preference.
They can be either collapsible/foldable or straight.
Types
1. Symbol cane
• These canes are smaller than other types of mobility cane. They are
a signifier and are used primarily to make others aware of the user’s
vision impairment.
• For example, it may alert drivers that a pedestrian holding one may
not be able to see them, and as such to take extra care.
• A symbol cane is often lighter and shorter than the long cane, and
can be folded up to fit into a bag or pocket when not in use.
• Some people with a visual impairment use the symbol cane to
check for a stair edge or curb edge and it can be used to detect
things like door edges and frames.
Cont..
Conti..
• 2. Guide cane
• This type of cane is longer than a symbol cane and is used for
basic protection. A guide cane generally extends from the floor
to the user's waist or above providing information about
surroundings around or a step ahead.
• It can be used to scan for kerbs and steps. The guide cane can
also be used diagonally across the body for protection, warning
the user of obstacles immediately ahead.
• A roller tip can be used if appropriate to aid travel in different
situations, especially in unfamiliar areas and where surface
underfoot is uneven. The guide cane is also collapsible.
Cont..
3 Long cane
• This white cane is designed primarily as a mobility tool that is used
to detect objects and provide information about the environment to
the user about two steps ahead of them.
• The cane’s length depends on the user’s height, and traditionally
extends from the floor to the user's sternum.
• It differs from the guide cane in that a long cane’s end has a tip of
some kind – either rolling or pointed.
• Rolling tips can be best for smooth pavements and offer the largest
amount of protection as they never leave the ground. Pointed tips
can be used when tapping the ground as opposed to rolling across it.
4. Support cane
• The white support cane is designed primarily to offer physical
support and stability to someone who is blind or partially
sighted.
• Its white colour means the cane also works to make others
aware the user has sight loss. White support canes need to be
measured so that the height is correct for the individual.
• Support canes come with various styles of handles and can
also be collapsible.
5.Red-striped Canes
• If you see any of the above white canes, including white support
sticks, that also have red stripes on them, then this signifies that
the person also has a hearing impairment as well as a visual
impairment.
6. SMART WHITE CANE
• A white cane that uses smart
technology aims to help visually-
impaired people navigate their
surroundings.
• The device is equipped with built-in
speakers, smartphone integration,
and sensors that send vibrations to
warn users of obstacles up ahead.
• Users can also pair the cane with
their smartphone with the ability
to integrate it with a voice assistant
and google maps
ASSESSMENT/MEASUREMENT
• Choosing a wrong length for your white cane can make walking a
painful and tedious process as you are forced to take small unsure
steps.
• This results in either not being able to walk as fast as you want or
walking faster than your cane allows and risking bumping into people
or objects. Thus, choosing a cane that is too short can be
uncomfortable and can make movement unnecessarily hard.
CONTI..
• When it comes to choosing the right length of your white cane, there is
no single rule to be followed but Here are a few ways in which the
cane length is typically chosen that you could use as a guideline.
1.One of the more common methods of measurement is to pick a cane
that goes from the ground up to your sternum or your chest area when
you are standing in an upright position.
Measurement conti…
2. Some people prefer a cane or stick that one end comes up to their
chin when both you and the stick are upright and its other end is
touching the ground.
3. Another popular technique of how to measure for a blind cane is to
choose a cane that is approximately 4 inches shorter than your height
and will come up to your nose if stood vertically upright.
Measurement chart
Demonstration/ how it works
• Here’s how it works:
• the person holds the cane in their dominant hand, roughly centered
in front of the body, and the cane is swept from left to right in a
pattern about shoulder-width. It sweeps to the left as the right foot
steps and back to the right as the left foot steps, thus clearing the
pathway before each step.
Conti..
• Through the feel of the tip of the cane against the ground, it is
possible to detect changes in surfaces, grates and man-hole covers,
steps and curbs, and obstacles such as poles, signs, planters, and
trees. Each person decides how fast to walk based on their comfort
level in making adjustments to the obstacles found with the cane

  • 2. A BRIEF HISTORY • The movement to promote white canes as a symbol of blindness began in Europe and spread in America by the Lion’s Club International in the 1930s. • The white color was regarded as being easier for motorists and others to see alerting them that the individual holding the cane is blind. • Law was enacted to back it since that time in the United States • October 15th was set aside as “ WHITE CANE SAFETY DAY” established in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson as effort to raise awareness of people who carry white cane.

  • 4. Definition • Mobility canes are a form of mobility aid that enable blind or visually impaired people to go about their daily business when out especially in unfamiliar areas. • White mobility canes are used by many people who have a visual impairment. Primarily, they aid a person to scan their surroundings for obstacles or find orientation clues. • They are also helpful for others such as road users in identifying the person as vision impaired so that they can take appropriate care and attention.
  • 5. conti • Mobility canes are often made from aluminium, graphite- reinforced plastic or other fibre-reinforced plastic, and can come with a wide variety of tips depending on the user’s preference. They can be either collapsible/foldable or straight.
  • 6. Types 1. Symbol cane • These canes are smaller than other types of mobility cane. They are a signifier and are used primarily to make others aware of the user’s vision impairment. • For example, it may alert drivers that a pedestrian holding one may not be able to see them, and as such to take extra care. • A symbol cane is often lighter and shorter than the long cane, and can be folded up to fit into a bag or pocket when not in use. • Some people with a visual impairment use the symbol cane to check for a stair edge or curb edge and it can be used to detect things like door edges and frames.
  • 8. Conti.. • 2. Guide cane • This type of cane is longer than a symbol cane and is used for basic protection. A guide cane generally extends from the floor to the user's waist or above providing information about surroundings around or a step ahead. • It can be used to scan for kerbs and steps. The guide cane can also be used diagonally across the body for protection, warning the user of obstacles immediately ahead. • A roller tip can be used if appropriate to aid travel in different situations, especially in unfamiliar areas and where surface underfoot is uneven. The guide cane is also collapsible.

  • 10. Cont.. 3 Long cane • This white cane is designed primarily as a mobility tool that is used to detect objects and provide information about the environment to the user about two steps ahead of them. • The cane’s length depends on the user’s height, and traditionally extends from the floor to the user's sternum. • It differs from the guide cane in that a long cane’s end has a tip of some kind – either rolling or pointed. • Rolling tips can be best for smooth pavements and offer the largest amount of protection as they never leave the ground. Pointed tips can be used when tapping the ground as opposed to rolling across it.

  • 12. 4. Support cane • The white support cane is designed primarily to offer physical support and stability to someone who is blind or partially sighted. • Its white colour means the cane also works to make others aware the user has sight loss. White support canes need to be measured so that the height is correct for the individual. • Support canes come with various styles of handles and can also be collapsible.

  • 14. 5.Red-striped Canes • If you see any of the above white canes, including white support sticks, that also have red stripes on them, then this signifies that the person also has a hearing impairment as well as a visual impairment.

  • 16. 6. SMART WHITE CANE • A white cane that uses smart technology aims to help visually- impaired people navigate their surroundings. • The device is equipped with built-in speakers, smartphone integration, and sensors that send vibrations to warn users of obstacles up ahead. • Users can also pair the cane with their smartphone with the ability to integrate it with a voice assistant and google maps

  • 19. ASSESSMENT/MEASUREMENT • Choosing a wrong length for your white cane can make walking a painful and tedious process as you are forced to take small unsure steps. • This results in either not being able to walk as fast as you want or walking faster than your cane allows and risking bumping into people or objects. Thus, choosing a cane that is too short can be uncomfortable and can make movement unnecessarily hard.
  • 20. CONTI.. • When it comes to choosing the right length of your white cane, there is no single rule to be followed but Here are a few ways in which the cane length is typically chosen that you could use as a guideline. 1.One of the more common methods of measurement is to pick a cane that goes from the ground up to your sternum or your chest area when you are standing in an upright position.
  • 21. Measurement conti… 2. Some people prefer a cane or stick that one end comes up to their chin when both you and the stick are upright and its other end is touching the ground. 3. Another popular technique of how to measure for a blind cane is to choose a cane that is approximately 4 inches shorter than your height and will come up to your nose if stood vertically upright.
  • 23. Demonstration/ how it works • Here’s how it works: • the person holds the cane in their dominant hand, roughly centered in front of the body, and the cane is swept from left to right in a pattern about shoulder-width. It sweeps to the left as the right foot steps and back to the right as the left foot steps, thus clearing the pathway before each step.
  • 24. Conti.. • Through the feel of the tip of the cane against the ground, it is possible to detect changes in surfaces, grates and man-hole covers, steps and curbs, and obstacles such as poles, signs, planters, and trees. Each person decides how fast to walk based on their comfort level in making adjustments to the obstacles found with the cane
