Cancer vaccines work by stimulating the immune system to fight cancer. There are several types of cancer vaccines including therapeutic vaccines which treat existing cancer, prophylactic vaccines which prevent cancer, and tumor antigen vaccines which are made from cancer cells or parts of cancer cells. Dendritic cell vaccines target dendritic cells to activate T-cells and destroy tumors. DNA vaccines work by transferring cancer cell DNA into normal cells to express cancer antigens and activate killer T-cells. Current research is exploring new delivery methods for cancer vaccines like using tiny oxygen electrodes and laser treatments. Successful vaccines now exist for cervical and breast cancer.
