Camera shots and movement
1. Camera shots and movement.
The first shot has to be the establishing shot and it will describe where you are and what’s
happened, this gives the audience information about the film beginning.
Wide shot gives you loads of information and can give you the size of what’s happening.
Crane shot, gives you lots of versatility and you can take smooth Aerial shots like a dolly but
for the air or a high point.
Aerial shot/birds eye view usually taken from a helicopter an Aerial shot can be used as an
opening shot to explain what is happening in the scene. It can also be taken from a crane to
get low shots panning into a bird’s eye view.
Close up shot. There is very little background and forces the view to focus on the object that
is enlarged it can also highlight emoting on a characters face.
Extreme close up can show a bead of sweat running down someone’s forehead or a tear on
a cheek or the expression in someone’s eyes.
Point of view to show what the character is seeing and how they could feel and we become
the actor.
A subjective point of view or over the shouldershot, we see what the actor see but not
from their point of view and using this shot makes us part of the scene.
Two shot, this shows a conversation between characters or hero/ villain or a connection,
relationship or conflict.
Shot/reverse shot this is where one character is shown looking at another character and
then the other character is shown looking back at first character and you must follow the
180 degree rule.
Movement
Pans, a tripod shot going from left to right just like the movement of the head when your
body is still.
Tilts, this shot is on a tripod and the movement goes from up to down and can be used for
dramatic effect.
High angle, this gives you information about the character and makes them small.
Low angle makes the character seem big and important and is the revrese shot of a high
angle.
2. Dolly shot/ tracking shot the camera is physically moving and gets alongside the action.
Hand held shots are like dolly shots but are shakier to create tension or an action
sequences.
Zoom/ reverse zoom, this is magnifying the scene to show detail or a certain part that the
audience had missed and the camera stays still but we zoom in to what is happening.
