Ambient sound is used to create atmosphere or a sense of place.
Sound bridges, the use of sound to help transitions between sequences pass more fluidly.

or effect.
Diegetic sound
Everything that we see on screen belongs to diegetic sound like a door opening or a
keyboard typing. It belongs to the world you have created like voices of characters.
Non diegetic sound
This is background music or other things that you can’t see and you can’t see the source of
the sound. Any narrator and voice over are non-diegetic sounds and when a gun shots are
because the sounds have been amplified just like explosions.
Synchronous sounds, this is when sound effects are matched with the action to reinforce
the effect.
Asynchronous sound this is when the sound originates from the outside of the diegetic
reality of the film.
Contrapuntal sound is when a sound or voice doesn’t match the visuals.
