4. Midsummer murder
Midsummer Murders is a British television detective drama that
has aired on ITV since 1997. The show is based on the books by
Caroline Graham, as originally adapted by Anthony Horowitz. The
current lead character is DCI John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon), who
works for Causton CID. Dudgeon's character is the younger
cousin of former lead character DCI Tom Barnaby (John Nettles).
Dudgeon first appeared as randy gardener Daniel Bolt in the
Series 4 Episode "Garden of Death". Dudgeon permanently joined
the show in 2011 following Nettles' departure.
The stories revolve around the Barnaby's' efforts to solve
numerous murders that take place in the fictional English county
of Midsomer. The Barnabys have worked with several different
sergeants throughout the run of the show: Sgt Gavin Troy (Daniel
Casey), Sgt Dan Scott (John Hopkins), Sgt Ben Jones (Jason
Hughes), and currently Sgt Charlie Nelson (Gwilym Lee). A third
Christmas special aired on ITV on 24 December 2013.
5. INSPECTOR GEORGE GENTLY (WED 2000)
6,272 people watched this program last week on BBC 1.
Inspector George Gently (titled George Gently for the pilot and
first series) is a British television series produced by Company
Pictures for BBC One, set in the 1960s and based on some of the
46 Inspector Gently novels written by Alan Hunter.
The series features Martin Shaw as the eponymous inspector, Lee
Ingleby as Detective Sergeant John Bacchus, Simon Hubbard as
PC Taylor at the police station front desk, and Lisa McGrillis as
WPC (later DS) Rachel Coles. The show moved the setting of the
stories to Northumberland and County Durham, instead of
the Norfolk portrayed in the books. As the series begins,
the death penalty is still in effect in Britain, and a trip to
the gallows ends some early episodes.
6. SILENT WITNESS
8,560 people watched this show on January the 12th-18th on
BBC1.
Silent Witness is a British crime drama series, produced by
the BBC, focusing on a team of forensic pathology experts and
their investigations into various crimes. First broadcast in 1996,
and still on air, the series was created by Nigel McCrery, a former
murder squad detective based in Nottingham. He later went on to
create the hit series New Tricks, with writer Roy Mitchell. The
original series was based on Professor Helen Whitwell, a forensic
pathologist based in Sheffield, whom McCrery had known while
serving as a police officer. The programme originally followed the
activities of a female pathologist, Professor Sam Ryan, played
by Amanda Burton. However, Burton's character departed early in
the eighth series in 2004.
7. Target audience
The target audience for these three programs could be middle aged
people or people ranging from 35 onwards. I think this because
younger people don’t usually watch crime dramas too much unless
they have a new approach, the story it easy to follow and it has
some comedy evolved to make the show more interesting.
