California Gold Rush
When people hear the term gold rush it is automatically associated with California. The first, gold
rush was in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. This was a tremendous impact due to people rushing
to the Carolina's mountains. People flocked from all neighboring states to strike rich. The second,
was in Georgia a three ounce nugget was found. Miners began to search in every cave for gold. The
third, gold rush was in California. Flakes of gold were found in the Sacramento Valley. The
population expanded to 100,000. Locals benefited from the mast flock of miners. People have
always been fascinated with gold and people are still searching for gold.
First of all, in 1799, a young man from a local farming family found a shining rock along the Little

Harvard University states," The population grew from 1,000 in 1848 to over 20,000 by 1850"
(Harvard). Most of the people who were eager to make the long trip to California left their families
behind. Most of the miners mortgaged their homes and also borrowed money to pursuit their dreams
to strike it rich. The women were left behind to work on the land and to take care of their children.
Thousands of people rushed to California and known as the 49's. A very small amount of women
were able to travel along with their husbands. Many of them spent their entire live savings to make
the journey. The influx of miners came from all over the United States. The news was also heard all
over the world and migrants from Peru, Panama, and as far as China traveled in ships to achieve
their destination. At first there were only two ways to reach California. Many endured the six
months long trip to California. One way was the Oregon–Trail and the second was through ships.
People who lived on the east coast of the United States chose the Oregon Trail and it was a harsh
journey. The constant fear due to hostile territory and also the illnesses caused a great deal of stress
for them and the wear and tear of their wagons. The other way people traveled sea using ships and
this was also a six months trip. They had to travel all the way down South America and turn up to
California. Either way

The California Gold Rush
Gold Rush! Gold had been found about a year ago near Sacramento! I hope to find some in these
months up ahead, so I can have a fortune and live the rich life with everything I could wish for! But
for now, I have to stick to my trusty pan and sifter to work with me to achieve this dream. In the
camp that I'm staying at, there are a lot of different cultures because of the immigration to find the
gold by being prospectors, so the camp is mostly made up of young, able–bodied men. The food and
supplies here are priced exorbitantly because of the amount of gold here. Just a loaf of bread cost
almost a dollar! Luckily, I have brought along supplies from back East, so I can sell supplies as well
to collect money to buy mining equipment to find some

Mexican Gold Rush History
The Gold Rush (1848–1855)
The Bay of San Francisco became the objective of ships bounds for the Pacific Coast, and in the
1840s a center of periodic trade. Upon the time of the Gold Rush, San Francisco was a regional
rather than an urban designation– the settlement was still called Yerba Buena (Vance, 1964, p. 6). In
1848, James Marshall and John Sutter discovered gold near the American River located near
Sacramento, California. Both Marshall and Sutter tried to keep the discovery of a gold a secret.
However, the secret could not be contained ("California Gold Rush"). When the news of gold being
discovered at Sutter's Mill broke out, many San Franciscans did not believe it was true. Many San
Franciscans remained skeptical when an issue for March 15, 1848, the Californian newspaper first
announced the discovery of gold. It was not until a visitor from the diggings appeared in a San
Francisco store and made purchases with ounces of gold. The merchant who received the gold put
the shiny particles on display at his store, and the townspeople's doubts began to disappear (Lewis,
1980, p. 49–50). "Gold Fever" swept across San Francisco. Figure 2 shows the major important gold
mines discovered in California during the Gold Rush. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People from Mexico, Chile, China, and many other areas came to find gold. The population increase
included many workers from China, who came to work in gold mines and later would help link the
west coast and east coast with the building of the Transcontinental Railroad ("California Gold
Rush"). California's overall population growth was so huge that the California became incorporated
into the Union as the 31st state in 1850. This was two years after the United States has acquired
California from Mexico under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican–

Gold Rush Narrative
Gold Rush "Slavery, Gold Rush, what's next?!" Mom, dad, and I have never known what freedom
is. We have been sent from slavery to the Gold Rush, my family has never been treated well. When
we were slaves we worked for nine whole years, then we got sent to were the miners worked... It's
November 27, 1861, and the cold weather has already been really bad for everyone, especially
miners. Our owner is one of the meanest ones there are. If he sees you take a one minute break then
he will yell at you with his very disruptive voice. He gives us the supplies we need to find gold but
it's still super rough. The miners all have to work 24/7. My mom is the most curious about what's

"Hear that?" Dad hit something with his shovel. There was a big loud noise were Dad hit the dirt
with his shovel. We all looked at each other and started digging, it felt like a hour before we were
able to dig the thing out. When we looked at what we dug out, it was like we were looking at a
treasure chest full of a million dollars. We had dug out a huge gold nugget! We knew we had to
show our owner, he would be so happy. But we wouldn't feel any better about it. After we had
showed the gold nugget to our owner we went right back to work, but the owner was very proud of
what he got. I told him that it weighted exactly nine whole pounds! When we got out of the owners
lodge back into the bitter cold snow I thought to myself, "Shouldn't we get a reward for that?" The
next day when I woke up I saw a pile of thing layed out in the mine, gold specks, change of clothes,
first, and one more thing, a map. I asked Dad what the stuff was for. Dad answered, "It's the things
we need to escape." I argued "Last time we tried to escape, we got caught." Then, Mom chimed in,

Gold Rush In California
Thomas Fuller once said "we never know the worth of water till the well is dry" (Fuller). As a
species we need water to cook, clean, and most importantly live. With water being a natural resource
overuse and misuses of it can cause its supply to rapidly dwindle down, and that's exactly what's
happening in California right now. California's water comes a married of places such as aquifers,
groundwater, surface water, rivers, reservoirs, dams and irrigation systems where 80% of that water
goes towards agriculture and 20% to urban/residential use. California's water supply is so
substandard that the state can't even say their predicament is a drought, but it can be classified as a
crisis. And to add insult to injury the states infrastructure has ... Show more content on

In 1906 President Roosevelt had granted the city a permit to "divert water from the Owens River
Valley [which was a fairly new] reservoir [located] in the San Fernando Valley" (Wells and Blake).
That permit led to behind the scene meetings with the city's mayor and other leading LA capitalists
where they were using the water from the San Fernando Valley for personal gain and to fatten their
wallets by "[bolstering] real estate speculation and [irrigating] vast new acreage of farmland" (Wells
and Blake). Los Angles wasn't the only city in the state where convoluted dealings were happening,
in San Francisco for thirty years capitalist were redirecting water from the Tuolumne River. In
addition to that for ten years naturalist John Muir protested against the states choice to the
eradication of the Hetch Hetchy valley. Muir's efforts were for not because in 1913 President Wilson
signed the Raker Act which permitted dam construction. The Raker Act did disclose that selling any
electrical power that was "generated from the dam to any corporation or individual" (Wells and
Blake) was against the law, and forgoing the law most of the power that the dam did generate was
sold to the utilities company of Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). And by the end of the 1940's, "San

The Gold Rush Effects
The goldfields were discovered in 1848 but the gold rush started in 1851. The first amount of gold
was found by Edward Hargraves. Many people travelled from all around the world in hopes that
they would find a lot of gold and become rich. For many people that didn't happen, only a few
people found a good amount of gold. Between 1851 and 1861 Australia produced one third of its
gold. On the goldfields there was discrimination against the chinses immigrants and the Aboriginals.
The miners had to carry a miner licence with them when working on the goldfields. The miners
didn't like that idea and fought back to stop them from carry it around with them everywhere they
went.

The gold rush was significant because it helped to provide the money for more technology such as
the development of trains and railways. The gold rush brought many people to Australia to help dig
for gold. It had a major effect on immigration. Many Chinese migrants came to Australia to mine for
gold but were treated poorly. The gold rush also had a major effect on other businesses because
everyone went to the mines when the gold rush started hoping that they would become rich by
finding lots of gold, leaving a shortage of farmers and many other occupations. It also effected the
Australian economy and the development on Australia. To conclude the gold rush had a significant
impact on the Australian economy and the development of the country such as railways and trains.

Books, movies, paintings, music, and other types of art are connected in various ways, but one
connection seems to stand out. All art mediums are constructed in a way that disallows a median to
be reached regarding one's opinion from another. If a group of people favors one thing, another
group most likely exists that has the opposite, or conflicting opinion. 2112, read Twenty–one twelve,
is a 7–part conceptual album by the Canadian progressive rock band Rush, illustrates this conflict in
its main plot. Regardless of its vivid storytelling and impactful instrumentals that glues everything
together, it is evident that each listener will break apart in terms of their personal opinions.
2112, much like in Anthem by Ayn Rand, the dystopic idea of equality and how everyone should
cherish their unique identities that they possess. The main character, named Anonymous, retaliates
against the idea by not conforming to what is expected by the "Priests of the Temples of Syrinx", but
the factor driving him ultimately was the will to venture outward and appreciate something that
seemingly no one else sees. The conversation between Anonymous, and the priest during "IV.
Presentation", separates light from dark. Anonymous, after discovering a guitar that the "Elder race
of man" left, speaks out to share his opinions. "I can 't believe you 're saying / These things just can
't be true / Our world could use this beauty / Just think what we might do" (Rush, IV. Presentation).

Gold Rush And The Silver Rush
Gold rush Today I will be talking about the gold rush and I think it will be a lot of fun so I will just
let you read about the gold rush It started when some men were working and they were digging.then
they found gold it pretty much spread immediately. People came from everywhere to find gold.
Then they started to make towns and people wanted the gold. They started to fight and it became
kaos. After people moved in to the gold land people were charging 19 million to live there. But
people did not like the cost to live there. So they went somewhere eventually they found gold. About
1 year later it was a ghost town(a ghost is a town is a town that had a lot of people but now they all
leave). In Helena people found gold in 1864. People went nuts and wanted that gold. So they went
to Helena and got all that gold and went a way. A few years later they found gold in grasshopper
creek. In conclusion I think the gold rush is very important.Next week I will be talking about the
battle of the little bighorn. So please try to read it. Goodbye!

The California Gold Rush
The California gold rush began with the discovery of nuggets in the Sacramento Valley in 1848. The
California gold rush could possibly be one of the greatest events that shaped American history
during the 19th century. As the word spread that there had been gold found, thousands of gold
miners made the journey to San Francisco. At the end of 1849, the population of the California
territory was about 100,000 and before the gold rush in 1848 the population was less than 1,000.
The gold rush peaked in 1852 and by the end of it there was a total of $2 billion in precious metal
that was extracted which is approximately 750,000 pounds of gold. The first recorded gold flake that
was found was on January 24, 1848, and was found by James Wilson Marshall, who was a carpenter
from New Jersey, the gold flakes were found in the American River by Coloma, California. Marshall
was there working on building a water powered sawmill. Soon after Marshall's discovery at the mill,
the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed which ended the Mexican–American War and also left
California to the United States. Though Marshall and Sutter the owner of the mill, Marshall was
building tried to keep the news of the discovery quiet, but word got out. By the middle of March a
newspaper was printed that gold was found at Sutter's Mill. At first everyone in San Francisco was
in disbelief, but by mid–June. As word spread that there was actually gold in California, the first
miners to arrive came from,

The California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush was an event that lasted from January 24th, 1848 to 1855. The event was
driven mainly by the large quantities of gold reserves that were discovered in the soon to be US state
of California. This event caused many Americans to move from the eastern states and middle states
to California with the hopes of finding gold. In this paper, I will analyze the economy at the time the
gold rush started and attempt to answer the question of why individuals found it necessary or
advantageous to move out to California in pursuit of gold. I will also consider personal accounts and
editorials written to gain a more personal narrative of the conditions people were experiencing as
well as their mindsets in deciding whether to move to California for the gold or not. First, I would
like to consider the economic theory behind the gold rush and explain why on the surface; it is quite
simple. Consider a modern theoretical case. Say a family of four is living in Cincinnati, Ohio and
the main earner of the family works for a tool manufacturing company in Cincinnati. Suppose that
the company decides during their yearly employee reviews that they aren't going to give this certain
individual a pay raise for the next year; also suppose that the employee does not see themselves
climbing up the pay scale any further. Now suppose that this person is offered a thirty thousand
dollar per year raise if they move out to Los Angeles, California for a new machine related job.

The Gold Rush On California
The effect of the Gold Rush on the Californians. Gold in California was incidental discovered near
an American stream that would change the young creating state. All finished America, youthful
colleagues settled on the decision to go to California. People started from Europe, Asia, and South
America searching for minute wealth. The new American dream was to get rich, and to make a
fortune quickly. (Mill operator 151) In 1839, one of the wealthiest people in California came over as
an outcast from Sweden; his name was John Sutter. His inspiration of coming to California was to
build his own specific private agrarian space. In late 1847, James Marshall and around twenty other
men were sent to a stream by Sutter to manufacture a sawmill. With a particular ultimate objective
to supply enough wood required for Sutter's ranch. On January 24, 1848 the sawmill was essentially
whole when something stood out enough to be noticed. Marshall got what he thought to be gold, and
remembering that think the gold he saw another piece. In the wake of making extraordinary
compared to other discovers, Marshall and his worker retreated to work, notwithstanding it was not
a little while later that they kept finding more gold. (Glass 45–47) Even however Marshall was sure
that he had found gold, he required more confirmation, so Marshall to back some gold to Sutter.
Remembering the ultimate objective to test the gold Sutter used a reference book that gave him hints
about gold. Sutter made the

Essay On California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush began on January 24, 1848, when gold was found by James W. Marshall
at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. The first to hear confirmed information of the gold rush were
the people in Oregon, the Sandwich Islands, and Latin America, and they were the first to start
flocking to the state in late 1848. All in all, the news of gold brought some 300,000 people to
California from the rest of the United States and abroad. Of the 300,000, approximately half arrived
by sea and half came overland on the California Trail and the Gila River trail.
The gold–seekers, called "forty–niners", often faced substantial hardships on the trip. While most of
the newly arrived were Americans, the Gold Rush attracted tens of thousands from Latin America,
Europe, Australia, and China. At first, the prospectors retrieved the gold from streams ... Show more

San Francisco grew from a small settlement of about 200 residents in 1846 to a boomtown of about
36,000 by 1852. Roads, churches, schools and other towns were built throughout California. In 1849
a state constitution was written. The new constitution was adopted by referendum vote, and the
future state's interim first governor and legislature were chosen. In September, 1850, California
became a state as part of the Compromise of 1850.
New methods of transportation developed as steamships came into regular service. By 1869
railroads were built across the country from California to the eastern United States. Agriculture and
ranching expanded throughout the state to meet the needs of the settlers. At the beginning of the
Gold Rush, there was no law regarding property rights in the goldfields and a system of "staking
claims" was developed. The Gold Rush also had negative effects: Native Americans were attacked
and pushed off their lands and the mining has caused environmental harm. An estimated 100,000
California Indians died between 1848 and 1868 as a result of American

Thesis
The gold rush made California a commercial assemble and draws a lot of attention around the globe
by forming multicultural communities that still exist today. The huge amount of travelers from the
world largely regenerate the economy of the Pacific Northwest and brought wealth to North
America. However, in other perspectives, it was also a terrible loss to human life. The harsh
conditions in Alaska have led to hundreds of prospectors being killed and the severe diseases they
carried decimated the native people. Furthermore, the gold rush reflects how terrible consequences
greediness can cause when profit reaches 100%.

People open stores for the people who immigrate to seek better wealth. However, the local supply
couldn't provide a diversified market for the local industry, the inelastic demand and high
consumption power stimulated the growth of the vertical integration simultaneously.
Vertical integration refers to an strategy where a company expand its business operations into
several steps but on the same production, in other words, the company owns the distributor/supply
chain.
What is good about the vertical integration is that vertical integration can help enterprises reduce
costs and improve efficiencies by reducing transportation expanses and turnaround time. Sometimes,
however, a company relies on existing expertise and economics scale of other vendors rather than
vertical integration since they are more effective and practical.

Gold Rush Challenges
Being a gold prospector during the Gold Rush was inarguably one of the most challenging obstacles
a human being could ever face. Some might even consider the lengths people were willing to go to
for gold rather reckless and idiotic because of how menacing these obstacles were. The challenges
that people during the Gold Rush faced, while somewhat incomprehensible to people now, was an
extremely important goal to people in the 1800's. In the articles "Race to the Klondike" and All
About the Klondike Gold Mines", these challenges are thoroughly described and include examples
of how people lived during the Gold Rush, one of the most terrifying journeys in history. In the
article "Race to the Klondike", the author goes in explicit detail about the mind–boggling challenges
faced during the Gold Rush, including the treacherous journey. The travel was arguably the most

People that were inclined to look for gold were forced to make beds in the numbing cold of the
snow, which made for unfortunate living conditions. The food had to be carefully looked after so
that it was not eaten by animals, and when it turned dark it was mandatory to tie their food up in
trees. Forgetfulness would not be tolerated when it came to looking after your food because if you
forgot to tie it up, even once, you would face starvation or have to turn back and abandon your
aspiration to locate gold. The journey felt like an extensively long time, and they had to make camp
often because of the heavy luggage that was impossible to bear for excessive periods of time. These
situations were bound to turn anybody weary and, from an outsider's perspective, even be enough
for a person to desert your ambition of finding riches completely, but people in the past managed to

The California Gold Rush
In the late 1800's, a lot of change was being brought upon the United States, especially on the west
of America. New things were established and found in west states, such as Nevada and California.
Many of these new establishments helped freed slaves find living as the gold mines were a huge
ideal to foreigners traveling from the south and midwest. The Gold Rush was found in Sierra
Nevada during 1848, when gold was found in a mine. This completely changed the popularity and
population of California. Although, for many people who wanted to travel to mine for gold during
the Gold Rush, it was a tough journey as there was no true railroad nor steamboats yet to be taken to
the west. With the rise of exposure for the Chinese population in San Francisco, ... Show more

African Americans were able to finally escape from slavery when coming to California. Gold
became the solution for many slaves to free themselves or their families by selling gold dusts to
their owners. A fine example and quote to explain how well African Americans were doing in the
west coast is from Stephen Magag, who published, Fortune Smiled on Many Black Miners, says
"African Americans hit plenty of California pay dirt –– by 1863, they were collectively worth about
$5 million (the equivalent of $100 million today)." The Gold Rush was able to give freedom for
African Americans; and with that independence, they were able to create their own businesses in
California. Not only was wealth being brought to people who were working or receiving gold,
California was taking in a lot of money which made a large impact for a wealthy state. William
Swain, a man traveling to the west to find gold, sent his brother, George, a letter about his journey. I
found that it was interesting the amount he had spent on things in California, and how he was totally
okay with spending a lot of money on somethings. He spent between 50 cents to ten dollars on food
and 10 to 40 dollars on clothing pieces. The west part of the states knew all the people the gold was
bringing in so they only made a beneficiary choice on behalf of their wealth and popularity.
California was already known as a wealthy and expensive state, so the probability to become a
wealthy person, with a wealthy lifestyle in California, was very hard. Many of the people who did
travel to the gold rush, had to sleep in homemade boroughs, or sleep in their wagons. According to
the documentary film, "Speck of The Future," the biggest part of the Gold Rush was getting there.
Historian, J.S Holliday, mentioned how many immigrants dreaded the travel through the desert and
Sierra Nevada because of

The Gold Rush In California
The gold rush helped California industrialize. It is well known that industrialization in America
started in the east. However, the gold rush was the reason why California industrialized much faster
than the east. With the technological improvements, that the gold rush demands it helped California
industrialize much faster. James Marshall first discovered gold on January 24 1848 on the south fork
of the American river. A not so well know part of California history is that James Marshall was not
the first person to discover gold in California. Francisco Lopez was the first documented gold rush
in California. It is less know because right after Lopez had discovered gold the war between Mexico
and US had begun. Moreover, like everyone knows Mexico lost and lost California and other
territory to the US. After James Marshall had found gold and after everyone had started to hear the
news, few people started rushing to the minefields. The gold rush fever had not started yet because
many people were hesitant. It wasn't until president, President Polk at that time, confirmed that there
really was gold found in California after the announcement by Polk was heard. Massive amount of
people from all over the world rushed to California. States were not the first to hear about the news.
Actually, people in Hawaii were the first to find out. As trading ships were leaving the San

Women of the Gold Rush
Women of the Gold Rush
Imagine living in a world where women lacked the same rights as men. A place where they were not
able to get the jobs that they wanted and were often not credited for their actions. Most times if a
woman were to try to get a job or even participate in an activity, they would hide their true identities
and pretend to be men. This is what women in California had to do in the 1800's to early 1900's.
Many women came to California to work as prostitutes or entertainers during the 1850's (Women).
However, there were still many women in San Francisco who were very influential and leave an
everlasting impression on the city. Women such as Lillie Hitchcock Coit, Isadora Duncan, and Mary
Ellen Pleasant were all very important people living in San Francisco during the 1800's to 1900's,
and were able to make a difference in their community. Being the first woman to participate in a fire
rescue and late be made the mascot for firemen was Lillie Hitchcock Coit. What made her famous
amongst the people of San Francisco was from the first time that she participated in a fire rescue
with the Knickerbocker Engine Company No.5 (Museum). It was not common for women to work,
especially in a job that required strength and "manpower". She moved to California from West Point
in 1851 with her parents. Ever since she was a young girl, Lillie found a fascination in fire fighting,

The Discovery Of Gold Rush
The westward expansion of the United States in the 19th century and the astonishing success of that
expansion can be traced back to the discovery of gold. The California Gold Rush was an event that
forever changed the West and sparked the dream of endless riches for many Americans and people
worldwide. The year was 1848, and a man by the name of James Wilson Marshall, while working on
the construction of a mill, came across nuggets of gold at the base of the Sierra Nevada in the
Sacramento Valley. Wilson and his employer, John Sutter made attempts to keep their discovery a
secret but soon enough the news got out and spread like wildfire. It wasn't until 1949 that people
from all over made their journey to California to have their share in the riches of gold. There were
two main means of travel for those who wished to take part in the gold rush, both were of month's
travel, six to be exact. One method included a boat voyage down the tip of South America while the
other offered a treacherous travel through the wilderness of the mainland. Both were extremely
dangerous and expensive. Those whose dream of riches that made the trip to the California became
known as 49ers as in that year, and those following, caused an enormous influx of population as
hundreds of thousands of people flooded into mining towns. The Americans who made the trip came
with an idea that they would make it big due to the over exaggerated newspaper articles that at most
times boarded on fantasy. The 49ers

Migration to the gold fields
The gold rush was the turning point of Australia's history thanks to Edward Hargraves he discovered
gold in New South Wales in April 1851 and soon the gold rush kicked off. Clear evidence has been
provided on how Edward Hargraves started the gold rush started, Information on how push and pull
factors influenced people to the gold fields. Stories have been recounted on how life during the gold
rush was like in the gold fields. Information on how many numbers of migrants came and where
they came and what transportation was used
The gold rush started because Edward Hargraves returned to Australia after prospecting gold in
California he noticed that some parts of Australia were similar and convinced gold could be found.
He was proved right a year later he discovered gold in New South Wales in April 1851 he spread the
news to local colonies and overseas but it took many months for people overseas to find out. For the
first year, the diggings were worked by locals from Australian colonies. Soon after word spread to
England in January 1852 a new rush of migration followed as Britons from all classes decided to try
their luck the discovery of gold in Victoria also added to the hysteria. Husbands left their families,
ships were left stranded in port when crews left the ship to go to the diggings Teachers laborer's

Causes Of The California Gold Rush
In history whenever there is an event that can benefit or change the course of someone's life for the
better, people try to come and join the cause. This is what happened in the California and Colorado
Gold Rush. The Colorado and California Gold Rush during the 1800s brought thousands of people
to the west in search of gold. Although many people tried to strike it rich, the Native Americans
suffered disruption to their lands. The gold rush helped keep the fire sparked between the Native
Americans and the colonizers. While the gold rush did help bring the east and west together and
boost the economy. The first gold rush that happened in the United States was in California. This
was in 1849 when a man named James Marshall found gold while he was building a sawmill on his
property. After this speck of gold was found the word spread around California. Once the word was
through California and other people started finding gold the news got to the 11th U.S. president,
James Polk. James then sparked the gold rush by announcing that gold was being found in
California without a problem, "You'll find it anywhere you dig down there.". One year earlier
Mexico gave up the California territory at the end the of the Mexican–American War. The sudden
change of land ownership caused conflict between the Mexican Americans and the Californians.
Fast forward 10 years to the start of the Colorado Gold Rush in 1859. In Colorado there were many

Gold is the catalyst for numerous events that develop the American economy just before the Civil
War. Mankind appears to have a passionate, enduring, and daresay destined obsession with gold and
mineral wealth. A gold rush is a force of nature that seems to shake up a culture just as much as an
economy. This is evident particularly in early to middle 1800's America where there is already this
grand ideal that divine providence wills for a massive expansion of American territory. The
introduction of gold into this equation contributes exponentially to what is by this time a borderline
American Revolution in its own right. The American gold rush (or rather the gold rushes) spawn an
enormous migration movement that leads to several lasting communities; many of which will
eventually become states. The subsequent surge in the country's economy stirs political and
economic discussions nationwide, and an American Middle Class continues to emerge in the rapidly
changing antebellum United States. Gold is the facilitator for all of these events (and more) as the
American economy grows just before the Civil War. The earliest noteworthy gold discovery of the
U.S. occurs in 1799 at what is today Reed's Gold Mine in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.
However, this rush is quickly overshadowed by the Georgia gold rush of 1829. This rush stimulates
a lot more national interest in the prospecting of gold, and several people from all over the United
States flock to the Southern Appalachians to

Gold Rush Women
Assessments of the California Gold Rush often apply to a romantic gloss, suggesting that the
colorful "Days of '49' were a brief , exciting interlude in an otherwise orderly narrative. The Gold
Rush was romantic, brief, and exciting, but it was much more than that. During the 19th century
California seemed like a paradise for both men and women looking to escape the East coast in
search of a new life and opportunity. Many men and women took the opportunity to escape from the
west coast to start a new life at the booming industry in California. Many of these travelers were
successful in their new adventure while others were not, however it was different for women from
different ethnic backgrounds who suffered a inhumane fortune due to the imbalanced gender
difference present in California. The culture found in California during the gold rush provides
different perspective on the treatment of women and how the standards of sexuality were less
important in the United States.
To begin with, while the Native women and Chinese women were being mistreated, in contrary, the
White women of higher class were often considered the most complimentary for marriage. These
women were chosen by many men, they received numerous gifts and pleasant treatment. However,
on the other hand, Minority women were particularly Indian and Chinese, they had a much different
unfortunate experiences during the gold rush. Native Americans and Chinese women were often

In 1849, millions of people rushed to California. These people came for the Gold Rush, which was a
historical event that will be remembered forever. These people were called 49ers. Some traveled by
boat, and then walked across the Panama. Then they took another boat to C.A. Others took a boat
around the Cape Horn to C.A. or went on station wagon.
People from all over the world came to C.A. in search for gold. People traveled by land and sea.
Traveling in a station wagon wasn't that bad, and the people took resources from the C.A. Indian
tribes that had died from the plague.(Wonders pg. 140 and Gold Rush Guy). Miners usually spent
hours looking for gold and found nothing. Today, a small piece of gold could be worth 8$. Mining
was hard, boring, and dangerous. (Our C.A. pg. 78 and Gold Rush Guy). There were many different
ways to find gold. One way, was to pan in a river. Another way, was to use a rocker. There were two
different types of pans. (Ms. Hammill and Gold Rush Guy). In conclusion, in 1849, many people

California, the place to turn cant's into can's and dreams into plans. The same situation and scenarios
apply to today and even over one hundred and sixty five years ago. Then and now are not so
different, people are thriving or failing from the land of plenty, supplying themselves with
knowledge, wealth, or skill to either spread their wings and take flight or crash and burn. Each state
in the United States of America has a correlating nickname to either why it's famous or an
explanation of its history. California's state name is The Golden State, and going all the way back to
1849 is why this was such an influential time for California and all of America. This is the period of
the Gold Rush. Reasons why this event was so impeccable, to the development of California, are the
years leading up to the discovery, the first findings, the journey, and so much more. Americans,
inspired by the idea of manifest destiny meaning it was their God given right to rule the entire, mass,
amount of land from ocean to ocean. Thanks to this vision it quickly sent current land occupiers,
Californios or Mexico, and the United States in two completely different directions. In 1846,
Mexican soldiers rose up against United States forces. On May 31, 1846 President James K. Polk
declared war. A small California Republic, The Bear Flag Revolt, seized Sonoma for naval forces to
occupy in hopes of wining the war. The Mexican War didn't bring about much fighting just a hot

Australian Gold Rush
Introduction:
The gold rush era was a significant event in Australian history. The Australian gold rush first started
during May 1851 in Bathurst after Edward Hargraves found a grain of gold in a waterhole. The gold
rush was a period of time for immigration of workers locally and from overseas and marked the start
of significant changes in the Australian economy.
Where and why did the gold rush occur?
Hargraves thought there were similarities in the geological features between Australia and
Californian Goldfields where he had just returned from. He was proven to be correct and quickly
registered his claims with local authorities. The first Gold Fields in NSW where given the name of
"Ophir" and was appointed a Commission of Land and received a reward of 10,000 pounds and a
life pension. Ophir was to become home to more than 1000 ... Show more content on

they went from tents to bark huts and stone buildings to replace the old tents. The food there was
damper and tea. Doctors and nurses for the treatment for the sick/injured was hard to come by with

people would become dehydrated without having enough clean water, the winter was not very good

Essay On Gold Rush
Gold Rush in the United States It is amazing how a small gold nugget drew a large mass of miners
into Cherokee Nation's grounds. Most people never associate Georgia and gold. Instead they
associate Georgia with slaves, plantations, and cotton fields. One of the unusual events in the Gold
Rush was the surprising find of gold in Georgia. A three ounce gold nugget was found. People began
to search for gold in the caves. Once more gold was found they began to dig for the precious gold
nuggets. First, gold was found in Georgia records indicate to have been in 1829. "John Witheroods
found a three–ounce nugget along Duke's Creek in Habersham County (present–day) White
County". (David Williams) Others will dispute who actually found the first piece of gold nugget.
Some people say it was a gentlemen from North Carolina, found gold nugget in the same location.
There is no concrete evidence who was the first one to find gold. Once the news reached the
surrounding areas and states. The large number of miners was greater than initially expected to have
been. Many Gold Rush towns were quickly built in the north part of Georgia, which was near the

Gold Rush Negative Effects
Thousands of people migrating west, new opportunities coming their way, heading towards the gold
found in San Francisco. After gold found in the state of California, thousands of people came over
there to mine the gold and get rich, making the Gold Rush largest migration in world history. So
many people came to California that the state became the most diverse state in the United States.
Although there were positive attributes to the Gold Rush, the Gold Rush mostly had a negative
effect on America because of the harsh journey and the ruined landscape.
To begin, the rough journey to migrate west certainly negatively affected the United States of
America. While the american citizens were traveling to the west for gold, an extreme cholera
outbreak developed due to the "unsanitary conditions" that the migrants had to deal with (Gillon 65).
These people were not at their home where they have supplies and cleaning equipment; they were
living in tents where they had no access to anything like a broom to sweep the floor. If someone got
dirty or sick, they couldn't do anything about other than wash up in the river, which would worsen
the cholera outbreak. A Native American described the scene as a "solid mass of wagons and men
digging graves on each side of the river; men dying in their wagons, hallooing and crying and
cramping from cholera, women screaming and hallooing and praying" (Gillon 65). Because of the
filthy conditions, many people were screaming and dying from cholera. These people are putting up
with so much pain just to get some gold, which they may not live to see. Hence, because of the long,
harsh journey with foul conditions, the Gold Rush undoubtedly negatively impacted the ... Show

California's Gold Rush
"Gold! Gold! Gold from the American River!" shouted Samuel Brannan, a newspaper publicist from
San Francisco, following the discovery of gold in California (Rhodes 168). This event sparked a
new era of immigration to California in 1848. The gold rush began on January 24, 1848 when gold
was found by James Marshall, a foreman for John Sutter, at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California
(Bancroft 32). Initially the news was kept a secret due to the risk of a massive wave of gold seekers
interfering with Sutter's land and agricultural plans. However, by March of 1848, Samuel Brannan's
flamboyant confirmation to the rumors created the California gold rush. Hordes of people from
around the world traveled to California in search for gold and success. San Francisco's population
exponentially grew from a small settlement of about 200 residents in 1846 to a city of about 36,000
by 1852 (Johnson 12–14). As news spread, the event became known worldwide. The gold rush in
California was a vital event that became the basis for the social and economic boom that
subsequently fashioned global fame, an influx of settlers and, as a result, the 31st addition to the
union as "The Golden State". California's gold rush began on March 1848. Just two months prior,
gold was discovered in Sutter's mill. The news was never meant to spread over anywhere else but, to
their dismay, the news for gold discovered was far too immense to be kept a secret for too long. As
rumors circulated then were confirmed,

Essay On The Gold Rush
In early 1848, cries of gold findings flooded the West. White settlers flooded the area like a
hurricane in search of riches never seen before to the common man. It was the single greatest
migration of people in a shortest amount of time. The gold rush was a very dark period in American
history and it shouldn't be celebrated; the Native American's were slaughtered in American thirst for
gold Explosions of violence from both natives and settlers were common in this environment of
prejudice and greed. Between 1850 and 1890 eighty percent of the total number of Native
Americans in California died due to murder and massacre, disease, starvation, and forced migration
from their native lands. The destruction of the culture and lives of the people native to California
and the Black Hills of South Dakota. Greed changed the morals and values of the miners and
Americans alike in the Gold Rush. The gold rush brought riches and highlighted racism of white
Americans, while systematically destroying Native Americans in that region.
"To many Californians the mention of January 24, 1948, conveys no special meaning, nor is that
date widely commemorated in the state. Yet it had a special significance in the history of California,
for on that day James Marshall, a moody carpenter from Missouri, discovered the first gold nuggets
that resulted in a stampede known as the California Gold Rush." The California Gold Rush drew in

great passage in the right direction for developing a modern world but it ended up leading us back,
words, back into an era where monarchy rules the world. The daily life of a miner was far from
perfect. The way the papers and other means of propaganda had portrayed getting rich quick, but it
was far from easy. All the equipment that was needed to start out as a miner was for the most part
outrageous. The earning wages from gold was" sixteen dollars an ounce" pg.8. Even so, the work
was backbreaking. There was swarms of minors trying to get rich quick. To many miners that
traveled to get a piece of the precious metal they where resorted to taking land from previous land
owner just to get ahead in the Gold Rush. Not to mention that the living conditions where also
outrageous. The "rentals of hotels and other business structures, whether of boards or of canvas,
reached even dizzier heights than did commodity prices" pg.8. This spaces where set prices at 3,000
dollars a month or 40,000 dollars for a year, there was also other prices around the area of San

The Gold Rush pioneered the way for many people to seek and find their own glory. From around
the time of 1848 to early 1850's, thousands of people across the world were flooding in to the vast
mountains of the Sierra Nevada in California. Discovered early on in 1848, it took no time for the
eastern side of the United Sates to hear of the strike and wanted a piece of striking it rich. This
magnified history and became one of the most significant events to shape America in the first half of
the 19th century. Many people did fail in their search for glory but those few who succeeded in The

Marshall and Sutter both wanted to keep the news of the discovery a secret; as they wanted it all for
themselves. That turned out to not be the case as word got out and by mid–March, at least one
newspaper was flooding the news with how much gold was being unearthed at Sutter's Mill. Many
did not believe this notion of discovery and thought of it as more of a political stunt. Though in
disbelief, a storekeeper by the name of Sam Brannan set of a frenzy when he displayed through
town a vial of gold attained from Sutter's Creek. This made people believe in the discovery and no
later than mid–June, roughly three–fourths of the male population of San Francisco had left to the
gold mines for their portion. And by August of 1848, the numbers of miners in the area reached
4,000. As news spread of the fortunes being made in California, people from all over the world came
flooding in. The first came were from lands that were accessible by boat, such as Oregon, the
Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii), Mexico, Chile, Peru, and even China. When reports did reach the

The California Gold Rush
In 1849, an inundation of Chinese immigrants came to the United States to take part in the
California gold rush. Relations between the Chinese and Americans started off neutral, but soon
conflicts arose. White workers saw Chinese as a threat to their status and tried to solve this issue by
passing the Chinese Exclusion Act; this severely limited the number of Chinese allowed to
immigrate into the country at the time. Although this compromise satisfied the white protests, it only
lead to more conflicts with how the Chinese were treated during immigration. These conflicts would
not be resolved for another 61 years.
The California gold rush began when a gold nugget was uncovered in the American River during
1848. Not only did this discovery entice Americans from all over the United States to travel to
California in hopes of making their own profit, but it also brought a torrent of Chinese immigrants to
the United States between 1849 and 1882. At the time of the gold rush, China's economy was very
weak. There were wars and famines occurring. When news of the gold rush reached China, many
Chinese men set out to America with hopes of gaining wealth and returning back to their homes.

crews throughout the West, and in low–paying industrial jobs" (Chinese Immigration to the United

Essay On The Gold Rush
Running through the streets of San Francisco with a bottle of gold dust in hand, Samuel Brannan
could be found shouting "Gold! Gold! Gold from the American River!". During the mid 1800s, the
Gold Rush was on the forefront of everyone's minds. While it is commonly known that many
pioneers going to the west falsely believed that they were going to strike it rich upon sight. There is
disagreement on whether the Gold Rush was helpful in the growth of the United States. While some
might argue that it actually harmed the young nation by claiming lives, it is most reasonable to
believe that the Gold Rush was instrumental in the growth of america for the following three
reasons: it colonized the west, advanced travel, and decreased slavery.
The gold rush advanced western travel. During the early stages of the gold rush, there were two
ways to travel to california: by wagon or ship. By wagon the passage was beyond difficult
presenting difficulties such as indians, weather, disease, food. On the other hand, ship fare was
expensive, overcrowded, and at the mercy of the sea. Because of this the demand for westward
travel that was quick and safe grew and spark ideas. This struggle was necessary for the creation of
the famed transcontinental railroad, which would take people directly from the East to the West in
an affordable, quick and safe manner. Many times when they would go of in search of gold they
would leave families home. They needed a quick and easy way to communicate with that

California Gold Rush

  • 1. California Gold Rush When people hear the term gold rush it is automatically associated with California. The first, gold rush was in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. This was a tremendous impact due to people rushing to the Carolina's mountains. People flocked from all neighboring states to strike rich. The second, was in Georgia a three ounce nugget was found. Miners began to search in every cave for gold. The third, gold rush was in California. Flakes of gold were found in the Sacramento Valley. The population expanded to 100,000. Locals benefited from the mast flock of miners. People have always been fascinated with gold and people are still searching for gold. First of all, in 1799, a young man from a local farming family found a shining rock along the Little ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Harvard University states," The population grew from 1,000 in 1848 to over 20,000 by 1850" (Harvard). Most of the people who were eager to make the long trip to California left their families behind. Most of the miners mortgaged their homes and also borrowed money to pursuit their dreams to strike it rich. The women were left behind to work on the land and to take care of their children. Thousands of people rushed to California and known as the 49's. A very small amount of women were able to travel along with their husbands. Many of them spent their entire live savings to make the journey. The influx of miners came from all over the United States. The news was also heard all over the world and migrants from Peru, Panama, and as far as China traveled in ships to achieve their destination. At first there were only two ways to reach California. Many endured the six months long trip to California. One way was the Oregon–Trail and the second was through ships. People who lived on the east coast of the United States chose the Oregon Trail and it was a harsh journey. The constant fear due to hostile territory and also the illnesses caused a great deal of stress for them and the wear and tear of their wagons. The other way people traveled sea using ships and this was also a six months trip. They had to travel all the way down South America and turn up to California. Either way ... • 3. The California Gold Rush Gold Rush! Gold had been found about a year ago near Sacramento! I hope to find some in these months up ahead, so I can have a fortune and live the rich life with everything I could wish for! But for now, I have to stick to my trusty pan and sifter to work with me to achieve this dream. In the camp that I'm staying at, there are a lot of different cultures because of the immigration to find the gold by being prospectors, so the camp is mostly made up of young, able–bodied men. The food and supplies here are priced exorbitantly because of the amount of gold here. Just a loaf of bread cost almost a dollar! Luckily, I have brought along supplies from back East, so I can sell supplies as well to collect money to buy mining equipment to find some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Mexican Gold Rush History The Gold Rush (1848–1855) The Bay of San Francisco became the objective of ships bounds for the Pacific Coast, and in the 1840s a center of periodic trade. Upon the time of the Gold Rush, San Francisco was a regional rather than an urban designation– the settlement was still called Yerba Buena (Vance, 1964, p. 6). In 1848, James Marshall and John Sutter discovered gold near the American River located near Sacramento, California. Both Marshall and Sutter tried to keep the discovery of a gold a secret. However, the secret could not be contained ("California Gold Rush"). When the news of gold being discovered at Sutter's Mill broke out, many San Franciscans did not believe it was true. Many San Franciscans remained skeptical when an issue for March 15, 1848, the Californian newspaper first announced the discovery of gold. It was not until a visitor from the diggings appeared in a San Francisco store and made purchases with ounces of gold. The merchant who received the gold put the shiny particles on display at his store, and the townspeople's doubts began to disappear (Lewis, 1980, p. 49–50). "Gold Fever" swept across San Francisco. People from Mexico, Chile, China, and many other areas came to find gold. The population increase included many workers from China, who came to work in gold mines and later would help link the west coast and east coast with the building of the Transcontinental Railroad ("California Gold Rush"). California's overall population growth was so huge that the California became incorporated into the Union as the 31st state in 1850. This was two years after the United States has acquired California from Mexico under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican– American War ("San Francisco Gold Rush," ... • 7. Gold Rush Narrative Gold Rush "Slavery, Gold Rush, what's next?!" Mom, dad, and I have never known what freedom is. We have been sent from slavery to the Gold Rush, my family has never been treated well. When we were slaves we worked for nine whole years, then we got sent to were the miners worked... It's November 27, 1861, and the cold weather has already been really bad for everyone, especially miners. Our owner is one of the meanest ones there are. If he sees you take a one minute break then he will yell at you with his very disruptive voice. He gives us the supplies we need to find gold but it's still super rough. The miners all have to work 24/7. My mom is the most curious about what's going to happen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Hear that?" Dad hit something with his shovel. There was a big loud noise were Dad hit the dirt with his shovel. We all looked at each other and started digging, it felt like a hour before we were able to dig the thing out. When we looked at what we dug out, it was like we were looking at a treasure chest full of a million dollars. We had dug out a huge gold nugget! We knew we had to show our owner, he would be so happy. But we wouldn't feel any better about it. After we had showed the gold nugget to our owner we went right back to work, but the owner was very proud of what he got. I told him that it weighted exactly nine whole pounds! When we got out of the owners lodge back into the bitter cold snow I thought to myself, "Shouldn't we get a reward for that?" The next day when I woke up I saw a pile of thing layed out in the mine, gold specks, change of clothes, first, and one more thing, a map. I asked Dad what the stuff was for. Dad answered, "It's the things we need to escape." I argued "Last time we tried to escape, we got caught." Then, Mom chimed in, "But the guards aren't ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Gold Rush In California Thomas Fuller once said "we never know the worth of water till the well is dry" (Fuller). As a species we need water to cook, clean, and most importantly live. With water being a natural resource overuse and misuses of it can cause its supply to rapidly dwindle down, and that's exactly what's happening in California right now. California's water comes a married of places such as aquifers, groundwater, surface water, rivers, reservoirs, dams and irrigation systems where 80% of that water goes towards agriculture and 20% to urban/residential use. California's water supply is so substandard that the state can't even say their predicament is a drought, but it can be classified as a crisis. And to add insult to injury the states infrastructure has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1906 President Roosevelt had granted the city a permit to "divert water from the Owens River Valley [which was a fairly new] reservoir [located] in the San Fernando Valley" (Wells and Blake). That permit led to behind the scene meetings with the city's mayor and other leading LA capitalists where they were using the water from the San Fernando Valley for personal gain and to fatten their wallets by "[bolstering] real estate speculation and [irrigating] vast new acreage of farmland" (Wells and Blake). Los Angles wasn't the only city in the state where convoluted dealings were happening, in San Francisco for thirty years capitalist were redirecting water from the Tuolumne River. In addition to that for ten years naturalist John Muir protested against the states choice to the eradication of the Hetch Hetchy valley. Muir's efforts were for not because in 1913 President Wilson signed the Raker Act which permitted dam construction. The Raker Act did disclose that selling any electrical power that was "generated from the dam to any corporation or individual" (Wells and Blake) was against the law, and forgoing the law most of the power that the dam did generate was sold to the utilities company of Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). Many people travelled from all around the world in hopes that they would find a lot of gold and become rich. For many people that didn't happen, only a few people found a good amount of gold. Between 1851 and 1861 Australia produced one third of its gold. On the goldfields there was discrimination against the chinses immigrants and the Aboriginals. The miners had to carry a miner licence with them when working on the goldfields. The miners didn't like that idea and fought back to stop them from carry it around with them everywhere they went. • 13. The Canadian Progressive Rock Band Rush Books, movies, paintings, music, and other types of art are connected in various ways, but one connection seems to stand out. All art mediums are constructed in a way that disallows a median to be reached regarding one's opinion from another. If a group of people favors one thing, another group most likely exists that has the opposite, or conflicting opinion. 2112, read Twenty–one twelve, is a 7–part conceptual album by the Canadian progressive rock band Rush, illustrates this conflict in its main plot. Regardless of its vivid storytelling and impactful instrumentals that glues everything together, it is evident that each listener will break apart in terms of their personal opinions. 2112, much like in Anthem by Ayn Rand, the dystopic idea of equality and how everyone should cherish their unique identities that they possess. The main character, named Anonymous, retaliates against the idea by not conforming to what is expected by the "Priests of the Temples of Syrinx", but the factor driving him ultimately was the will to venture outward and appreciate something that seemingly no one else sees. The conversation between Anonymous, and the priest during "IV. Presentation", separates light from dark. Anonymous, after discovering a guitar that the "Elder race of man" left, speaks out to share his opinions. "I can 't believe you 're saying / These things just can 't be true / Our world could use this beauty / Just think what we might do" (Rush, IV. Presentation). Anonymous ... Gold Rush And The Silver Rush Gold rush Today I will be talking about the gold rush and I think it will be a lot of fun so I will just let you read about the gold rush It started when some men were working and they were digging.then they found gold it pretty much spread immediately. People came from everywhere to find gold. Then they started to make towns and people wanted the gold. They started to fight and it became kaos. After people moved in to the gold land people were charging 19 million to live there. But people did not like the cost to live there. So they went somewhere eventually they found gold. About 1 year later it was a ghost town(a ghost is a town is a town that had a lot of people but now they all leave). In Helena people found gold in 1864. People went nuts and wanted that gold. So they went to Helena and got all that gold and went a way. A few years later they found gold in grasshopper creek. • 17. The California Gold Rush The California gold rush began with the discovery of nuggets in the Sacramento Valley in 1848. The California gold rush could possibly be one of the greatest events that shaped American history during the 19th century. As the word spread that there had been gold found, thousands of gold miners made the journey to San Francisco. At the end of 1849, the population of the California territory was about 100,000 and before the gold rush in 1848 the population was less than 1,000. The gold rush peaked in 1852 and by the end of it there was a total of $2 billion in precious metal that was extracted which is approximately 750,000 pounds of gold. The first recorded gold flake that was found was on January 24, 1848, and was found by James Wilson Marshall, who was a carpenter from New Jersey, the gold flakes were found in the American River by Coloma, California. Marshall was there working on building a water powered sawmill. Soon after Marshall's discovery at the mill, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed which ended the Mexican–American War and also left California to the United States. Though Marshall and Sutter the owner of the mill, Marshall was building tried to keep the news of the discovery quiet, but word got out. By the middle of March a newspaper was printed that gold was found at Sutter's Mill. At first everyone in San Francisco was in disbelief, but by mid–June. • 19. The California Gold Rush The California Gold Rush was an event that lasted from January 24th, 1848 to 1855. The event was driven mainly by the large quantities of gold reserves that were discovered in the soon to be US state of California. This event caused many Americans to move from the eastern states and middle states to California with the hopes of finding gold. In this paper, I will analyze the economy at the time the gold rush started and attempt to answer the question of why individuals found it necessary or advantageous to move out to California in pursuit of gold. I will also consider personal accounts and editorials written to gain a more personal narrative of the conditions people were experiencing as well as their mindsets in deciding whether to move to California for the gold or not. First, I would like to consider the economic theory behind the gold rush and explain why on the surface; it is quite simple. Consider a modern theoretical case. Say a family of four is living in Cincinnati, Ohio and the main earner of the family works for a tool manufacturing company in Cincinnati. Suppose that the company decides during their yearly employee reviews that they aren't going to give this certain individual a pay raise for the next year; also suppose that the employee does not see themselves climbing up the pay scale any further. Now suppose that this person is offered a thirty thousand dollar per year raise if they move out to Los Angeles, California for a new machine related job. Assuming ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Gold Rush On California The effect of the Gold Rush on the Californians. Gold in California was incidental discovered near an American stream that would change the young creating state. All finished America, youthful colleagues settled on the decision to go to California. People started from Europe, Asia, and South America searching for minute wealth. The new American dream was to get rich, and to make a fortune quickly. (Mill operator 151) In 1839, one of the wealthiest people in California came over as an outcast from Sweden; his name was John Sutter. His inspiration of coming to California was to build his own specific private agrarian space. In late 1847, James Marshall and around twenty other men were sent to a stream by Sutter to manufacture a sawmill. With a particular ultimate objective to supply enough wood required for Sutter's ranch. On January 24, 1848 the sawmill was essentially whole when something stood out enough to be noticed. Marshall got what he thought to be gold, and remembering that think the gold he saw another piece. In the wake of making extraordinary compared to other discovers, Marshall and his worker retreated to work, notwithstanding it was not a little while later that they kept finding more gold. (Glass 45–47) Even however Marshall was sure that he had found gold, he required more confirmation, so Marshall to back some gold to Sutter. • 23. Essay On California Gold Rush The California Gold Rush began on January 24, 1848, when gold was found by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. The first to hear confirmed information of the gold rush were the people in Oregon, the Sandwich Islands, and Latin America, and they were the first to start flocking to the state in late 1848. All in all, the news of gold brought some 300,000 people to California from the rest of the United States and abroad. Of the 300,000, approximately half arrived by sea and half came overland on the California Trail and the Gila River trail. The gold–seekers, called "forty–niners", often faced substantial hardships on the trip. While most of the newly arrived were Americans, the Gold Rush attracted tens of thousands from Latin America, Europe, Australia, and China. In 1849 a state constitution was written. The new constitution was adopted by referendum vote, and the future state's interim first governor and legislature were chosen. In September, 1850, California became a state as part of the Compromise of 1850. New methods of transportation developed as steamships came into regular service. By 1869 railroads were built across the country from California to the eastern United States. Agriculture and ranching expanded throughout the state to meet the needs of the settlers. At the beginning of the Gold Rush, there was no law regarding property rights in the goldfields and a system of "staking claims" was developed. The Gold Rush also had negative effects: Native Americans were attacked and pushed off their lands and the mining has caused environmental harm. Some might even consider the lengths people were willing to go to for gold rather reckless and idiotic because of how menacing these obstacles were. The challenges that people during the Gold Rush faced, while somewhat incomprehensible to people now, was an extremely important goal to people in the 1800's. In the articles "Race to the Klondike" and All About the Klondike Gold Mines", these challenges are thoroughly described and include examples of how people lived during the Gold Rush, one of the most terrifying journeys in history. Forgetfulness would not be tolerated when it came to looking after your food because if you forgot to tie it up, even once, you would face starvation or have to turn back and abandon your aspiration to locate gold. The journey felt like an extensively long time, and they had to make camp often because of the heavy luggage that was impossible to bear for excessive periods of time. New things were established and found in west states, such as Nevada and California. Many of these new establishments helped freed slaves find living as the gold mines were a huge ideal to foreigners traveling from the south and midwest. The Gold Rush was found in Sierra Nevada during 1848, when gold was found in a mine. This completely changed the popularity and population of California. African Americans were able to finally escape from slavery when coming to California. Gold became the solution for many slaves to free themselves or their families by selling gold dusts to their owners. A fine example and quote to explain how well African Americans were doing in the west coast is from Stephen Magag, who published, Fortune Smiled on Many Black Miners, says "African Americans hit plenty of California pay dirt –– by 1863, they were collectively worth about $5 million (the equivalent of $100 million today)." The Gold Rush was able to give freedom for African Americans; and with that independence, they were able to create their own businesses in California. Not only was wealth being brought to people who were working or receiving gold, California was taking in a lot of money which made a large impact for a wealthy state. William Swain, a man traveling to the west to find gold, sent his brother, George, a letter about his journey. I found that it was interesting the amount he had spent on things in California, and how he was totally okay with spending a lot of money on somethings. He spent between 50 cents to ten dollars on food and 10 to 40 dollars on clothing pieces. The west part of the states knew all the people the gold was bringing in so they only made a beneficiary choice on behalf of their wealth and popularity. California was already known as a wealthy and expensive state, so the probability to become a wealthy person, with a wealthy lifestyle in California, was very hard. Many of the people who did travel to the gold rush, had to sleep in homemade boroughs, or sleep in their wagons. According to the documentary film, "Speck of The Future," the biggest part of the Gold Rush was getting there. After James Marshall had found gold and after everyone had started to hear the news, few people started rushing to the minefields. Most times if a woman were to try to get a job or even participate in an activity, they would hide their true identities and pretend to be men. This is what women in California had to do in the 1800's to early 1900's. Many women came to California to work as prostitutes or entertainers during the 1850's (Women). However, there were still many women in San Francisco who were very influential and leave an everlasting impression on the city. • 35. The Discovery Of Gold Rush The westward expansion of the United States in the 19th century and the astonishing success of that expansion can be traced back to the discovery of gold. The California Gold Rush was an event that forever changed the West and sparked the dream of endless riches for many Americans and people worldwide. The year was 1848, and a man by the name of James Wilson Marshall, while working on the construction of a mill, came across nuggets of gold at the base of the Sierra Nevada in the Sacramento Valley. Wilson and his employer, John Sutter made attempts to keep their discovery a secret but soon enough the news got out and spread like wildfire. It wasn't until 1949 that people from all over made their journey to California to have their share in the riches of gold. There were two main means of travel for those who wished to take part in the gold rush, both were of month's travel, six to be exact. One method included a boat voyage down the tip of South America while the other offered a treacherous travel through the wilderness of the mainland. Both were extremely dangerous and expensive. Those whose dream of riches that made the trip to the California became known as 49ers as in that year, and those following, caused an enormous influx of population as hundreds of thousands of people flooded into mining towns. The Americans who made the trip came with an idea that they would make it big due to the over exaggerated newspaper articles that at most times boarded on fantasy. The 49ers ... This is what happened in the California and Colorado Gold Rush. The Colorado and California Gold Rush during the 1800s brought thousands of people to the west in search of gold. Although many people tried to strike it rich, the Native Americans suffered disruption to their lands. The gold rush helped keep the fire sparked between the Native Americans and the colonizers. While the gold rush did help bring the east and west together and boost the economy. The first gold rush that happened in the United States was in California. This was in 1849 when a man named James Marshall found gold while he was building a sawmill on his property. After this speck of gold was found the word spread around California. Once the word was through California and other people started finding gold the news got to the 11th U.S. president, James Polk. James then sparked the gold rush by announcing that gold was being found in California without a problem, "You'll find it anywhere you dig down there.". One year earlier Mexico gave up the California territory at the end the of the Mexican–American War. The sudden change of land ownership caused conflict between the Mexican Americans and the Californians. Fast forward 10 years to the start of the Colorado Gold Rush in 1859. • 41. Impact Of The Gold Rush Gold is the catalyst for numerous events that develop the American economy just before the Civil War. Mankind appears to have a passionate, enduring, and daresay destined obsession with gold and mineral wealth. A gold rush is a force of nature that seems to shake up a culture just as much as an economy. This is evident particularly in early to middle 1800's America where there is already this grand ideal that divine providence wills for a massive expansion of American territory. The introduction of gold into this equation contributes exponentially to what is by this time a borderline American Revolution in its own right. The American gold rush (or rather the gold rushes) spawn an enormous migration movement that leads to several lasting communities; many of which will eventually become states. The subsequent surge in the country's economy stirs political and economic discussions nationwide, and an American Middle Class continues to emerge in the rapidly changing antebellum United States. Gold is the facilitator for all of these events (and more) as the American economy grows just before the Civil War. The earliest noteworthy gold discovery of the U.S. occurs in 1799 at what is today Reed's Gold Mine in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. However, this rush is quickly overshadowed by the Georgia gold rush of 1829. This rush stimulates a lot more national interest in the prospecting of gold, and several people from all over the United States flock to the Southern Appalachians to ... Gold Rush Women Assessments of the California Gold Rush often apply to a romantic gloss, suggesting that the colorful "Days of '49' were a brief , exciting interlude in an otherwise orderly narrative. The Gold Rush was romantic, brief, and exciting, but it was much more than that. During the 19th century California seemed like a paradise for both men and women looking to escape the East coast in search of a new life and opportunity. Many men and women took the opportunity to escape from the west coast to start a new life at the booming industry in California. Many of these travelers were successful in their new adventure while others were not, however it was different for women from different ethnic backgrounds who suffered a inhumane fortune due to the imbalanced gender difference present in California. The culture found in California during the gold rush provides different perspective on the treatment of women and how the standards of sexuality were less important in the United States. To begin with, while the Native women and Chinese women were being mistreated, in contrary, the White women of higher class were often considered the most complimentary for marriage. After gold found in the state of California, thousands of people came over there to mine the gold and get rich, making the Gold Rush largest migration in world history. So many people came to California that the state became the most diverse state in the United States. Although there were positive attributes to the Gold Rush, the Gold Rush mostly had a negative effect on America because of the harsh journey and the ruined landscape. To begin, the rough journey to migrate west certainly negatively affected the United States of America. While the american citizens were traveling to the west for gold, an extreme cholera outbreak developed due to the "unsanitary conditions" that the migrants had to deal with (Gillon 65). These people were not at their home where they have supplies and cleaning equipment; they were living in tents where they had no access to anything like a broom to sweep the floor. If someone got dirty or sick, they couldn't do anything about other than wash up in the river, which would worsen the cholera outbreak. A Native American described the scene as a "solid mass of wagons and men digging graves on each side of the river; men dying in their wagons, hallooing and crying and cramping from cholera, women screaming and hallooing and praying" (Gillon 65). • 55. California's Gold Rush "Gold! Gold! Gold from the American River!" shouted Samuel Brannan, a newspaper publicist from San Francisco, following the discovery of gold in California (Rhodes 168). This event sparked a new era of immigration to California in 1848. The gold rush began on January 24, 1848 when gold was found by James Marshall, a foreman for John Sutter, at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California (Bancroft 32). Initially the news was kept a secret due to the risk of a massive wave of gold seekers interfering with Sutter's land and agricultural plans. However, by March of 1848, Samuel Brannan's flamboyant confirmation to the rumors created the California gold rush. Hordes of people from around the world traveled to California in search for gold and success. San Francisco's population exponentially grew from a small settlement of about 200 residents in 1846 to a city of about 36,000 by 1852 (Johnson 12–14). As news spread, the event became known worldwide. The gold rush in California was a vital event that became the basis for the social and economic boom that subsequently fashioned global fame, an influx of settlers and, as a result, the 31st addition to the union as "The Golden State". White workers saw Chinese as a threat to their status and tried to solve this issue by passing the Chinese Exclusion Act; this severely limited the number of Chinese allowed to immigrate into the country at the time. Although this compromise satisfied the white protests, it only lead to more conflicts with how the Chinese were treated during immigration. These conflicts would not be resolved for another 61 years. The California gold rush began when a gold nugget was uncovered in the American River during 1848. During the mid 1800s, the Gold Rush was on the forefront of everyone's minds. While it is commonly known that many pioneers going to the west falsely believed that they were going to strike it rich upon sight. This struggle was necessary for the creation of the famed transcontinental railroad, which would take people directly from the East to the West in an affordable, quick and safe manner. Many times when they would go of in search of gold they would leave families home. They needed a quick and easy way to communicate with that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
