3. The Gentle Lena Essay
Lena s gentle, sweet, servant like behavior was a commentary on the way on the
way society saw and treated women in the early 20th century. Lena did not have an
opinion of her own, she did not know how to make decisions on her own; she was
told what to think, where to work, what to do with her money, her free time and her
future; her life was designed by someone else because she was a women and unable
to make decisions for herself. In the early 20th centurysociety treated women as
though they were not important, their duties were to have children, cook and clean
for their husbands and much like children of this timeperiod, women were to be were
to be seen but their voices not heard with regards to anything outside of the family. It

Upon arrival in America Lena was made to work as a servant, while her Aunt

questioned why: why did she have to leave Germany and go to America, why did
she have to work as a servant, why did she have to go to her Aunt s house every
Sunday, why couldn t she spend the money she worked hard to make, why did she
have to get married when she enjoyed working as a servant for the family, why did
she have to marry Herman Kreder when he obviously did not want to marry her. Lena
was just expected, as women in that timeperiod were, to just submit to the whims of
the dominent member of her family. Lena was so dutiful throughout the story, dutiful
to the point where modern day readers may actually get frustrated or angry with this
character.
Lena lived her life passively and took what came her way without complaint; the
cook who scolded Lena a great deal but Lena s german patience held no suffering
and the good incessant woman really only scolded for Lena s good (Stein 143). Her
cousins (Mrs. Hoydon s children) were mean, rude and ridiculed her horribly, and yet
she continued to go to their home every other Sunday as required by Mrs. Hoydon

4. Gender Stereotypes In Beauty And The Beast
Children watch Disney movies and dream of a life like that of a princess. To be
saved from the dangers of the world by a handsome prince and live happily ever
after. What some people don t realize is how Disney shapes the minds of children to
act a certain way. Children get an idea of how to play the role of their gender through
these movies. The 1991 film Beauty and the Beastis the first Disney movie that defies
traditional gender stereotypes.
Belle is the first character we really notice a defiance of gender stereotypes. She is
a nerdy, withdrawn girl who loves to read. Her dream that she sings about is to leave
her provincial town and seek a more adventurous life. She is very beautiful, and
Gaston, the antagonist, sees this clearly. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are also stereotypes related to social hierarchy. In Beauty and the Beast , the
servants are portrayed as very happy to be serving their masters and never having a
complaint. Gaston s sidekick , LeFou, is constantly suffering from the physical and
emotional abuse from his master. Gaston drops LeFou in a pile of mud, hits him
with a gun, squeezes his head underneath a chair and smashes him against a wall.
LeFou takes all this and still remains loyal to his boss. He is a clever man who is
undermined by others. He tricks Belle s father into describing the Beast in front of
the asylum doctors. This leads the doctors to believe Belle s father is insane and
leads the townsfolk on their quest to find the Beast. Despite his resourcefulness,
he is referred to as Gaston s stupid sidekick. He also has a comical appearance to
him. He is short and chubby, with missing teeth and a big red nose. This tells me
that the movie seems to relay the message that servants are supposed to serve and be
loyal to their bosses no matter how poorly they are treated. The servants are poor and
ugly, therefore their feelings are not nearly as important as their beautiful and rich
5. An Analysis of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
The Chronicles of Narnia are veritably the most popular writings of C.S. Lewis. They
are known as children s fantasy literature, and have found favor in older students and
adults alike, even many Christian theologians enjoy these stories from Lewis; for
there are many spiritual truths that one can gleam from them, if familiar with the
Bible. However, having said this, it is noteworthy to say that Lewis did not scribe
these Chronicles for allegorical didactics of the Christian faith, but wrote them in
such a well knit fashion that young readers might understand Christian doctrine
through captivating fantasy and thus gain an appreciation for it. With this in mind,
and in the interest of this assignment, the purpose of this paper is an... Show more

This temptation of power is very like the story of Jesus being tempted by Satan in
the desert. Satan, like the Witch, tempts Jesus with power in exchange for service
(Matt 4:8 9). In addition to yielding to these various temptations, Edmund also
agrees not to reveal his knowledge of the Witch to his siblings and consequentially
ends up lying to them about his discovery of Narnia. By doing this, Edmund fulfills
the antithesis of New Testament virtues of a good Christian in face of temptation.
Lewis artfully interlaces these Biblical themes of temptation into the character of
Edmund. However, Edmund s character is allegorical to the Biblical character of
Judas, the betrayer. Edmund betrays his siblings and the Beavers by going to seek
the White Witch. All he could think about were his earthly desires and wants
Turkish Delight, and the thought of being a prince. Comparing a mere child to
Judas, however, is a very serious allegory for a children s novel. So, Lewis creates
the idea of the Witch giving Edmund enchanted Turkish Delight. By making
Edmund s cravings for Turkish Delight the fault of the Witch and not his own,
Lewis alleviates some of the force of Edmund s offense. Once again, taking biblical
imagery and softening it to appeal to a young audience; and in the end of course,
Edmund is
6. Richardson Epistolary Style
Samuel Richardson is an English writer who published during 18th century. He is
famious for his three epistolary novels: Pamela: Or, Virtue Rewarded (1740),
Clarissa: Or the History of a Young Lady (1748) and The History of Sir Charles
Grandison (1753). Richardson s career was unusual for literature. He started to write
when he was fifty years old but his creativity was still young. The History of Mrs.
Beaumont is Richardson s last novelbut it is unfinished. It is the story of a lady‚
whom „his soul loved and it proves that Richardson s creativity was still working
until the day he died. He liked to think about his self as being a hero of an unhappy
love story. By using the epistolary form in his novels, Richardson wanted to induce

Driven by clear moralistic intentions, he wrote the epistolary novel Pamela as a
realistic sentimental parable based on an exemplary adventure. The initial area of
conflict is defined morally, in foreground being the rich seducer whose mother
dies, Mr. B. and his maid, Pamela Andrews. Richardson made in this way a
sentimental tearful prose. The evolution of the plot is reproduced firstly by long
letters of Pamela to her parents and by their responses. Dialog items, indeed
reduced, are also introduced in these fictitious letters. The style is constantly
punctuated by moralizing judgments and appeals to virtue, strongly standing out
the echo of Puritan moral propagated by Richardson. Basic terms of conflict result
from the aggressive behavior of the master tempted to seduce the maid and her
worthy resistance, although she was in love with him. Sentimental parable has a
happy ending. Converted to virtue by the young girl, Mr. B. who repents for his
intentions, he proposed her a marriage. The victory of a simple and pure person
just emphasizes once again the cautionary lesson from this work. The story is
complex: the main heroine is Pamela Andrews, a beautiful 15 years old who was
working as a maidservant in Bedfordshire. She was an innocent, pious and virtuous
girl. After the death of Lady B, she remained due to her wish as a servant in the
house. Mr. B, the new country landowner master after his mother death, started to
make advances towards the young servant. He tried to seduce against her will and
wanted to pay her to keep the secret about his mistake, but Pamela refused and told
the stories of his attempts to the housekeeper, Mrs. Jervis. One night he was
hidden in her room and tried to kiss and after this event the poor girl decided to go
back to her impoverished parents to preserve her virtue. He proposed her to marry
the chaplain from Lincolnshire, Mr. Williams, but she refused and was decided to go

Within...
Gender and technology has become a very important factor within today s society, as
it reflects upon the overlaps between gender, digital technologies and democracy.
Technology has presented both genders in provocative ways that tends to lead to
sexual harassment and then for political action to end genderbased violence. This then
becomes essential and fundamental to the working of and towards a healthy
democracy. The term Cyberfeminism has been developed throughout the previous
years as feminists who are interested in exploiting with technologies, such as the
Internet and cyber space think it is a vehicle of freedom from the dissolution of sex
and gender. An example of online digitalmedia that illustrates the case of gender of
Cyberfeminism is the online media campaign called Free The Nipple. This essay
will firstly describe this cyberfeminism campaign and how it is relevant towards
gender and technology. Then it will examine how digital media can be used as a
form of resistance against stereotypes and ideological assumptions in relation to the
role of women in contemporary society. Thus the difference between men and women
become relevant to these media phenomena and is of importance for gender patterns
when considering it in relation to the Internet. (Bimber, 3)
On December 12th, 2014, was the initial release of Free The Nipple campaign,
which is and/or was targeting all kinds of women from around the world to empower
them and to be apart of the equality movement.

There are many problems facing the world today. One of the biggest issues facing
future state leaders is the management of environmental threats to the United States
land, water and air quality. Combating pollution in our area will take more than
picking up discarded trash from the sides of our roadways; it means looking to the
water and air, as well as the land. Davidson County in Tennessee alone hosts
approximately 2,500 total miles of streams. Of these, an astounding 350 miles were
placed on the Environmental Protection Agency s (EPA) list of impaired waters in
2009 meaning that pollutionhas altered properties of the water to the extent that it

Stopping Over The Counter Birth Control
As a women, there are many things females go through every day. The most complex
thing about being a women, is becoming pregnant. Any females probably does not
want to be pregnant at the time. As well as having safe sex, the female wants to
protect themselves at all times. What I mean at all times is that females have an
advantage, which helps out more than a condom. Their advantage is birth control,
which can help out from preventing pregnancy, or help out with their menstrual cycle
that women go through every day as well.
As a female visiting the doctor for the first time, some may ask what birth control to
their doctor is. Birth control is pretty complex, if any female does not take it a

reason why Plan B is over the counter because it has no effect on the female unlike
birth control. Plan B can be over the counter, but birth control has a very high risk
that will cause a lot of side effects. The fact that Plan B is ineffective is the only
reason why it is over the counter, other than that birth control is more effective and
more risky than
10. Assistive Technology Case Study
1. Was I aware of the laws pertaining to students rights regarding accessing assistive
technology?
Assistive technology was defined in the Technology Related Assistance for
Individuals with Disabilities Act (Tech Act of 1988). Assistive technology was
defined as being any piece of equipment that is used to improve the life of an
individual with a disability. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 provided guidelines
for accessibility, usability and compatibility of telecommunications equipment. The
most recent law is the Assistive TechnologyAct of 2004. This act focused on
providing funding to individuals with disabilities (Carpenter, 2015).
2. Am I comfortable determining students needs and matching the needs to the most
appropriate form of assistive technology?
Currently I am not comfortable determining student s needs and matching the needs
to the most appropriate form of assistive technology by myself. To determine the
best device for a student the whole IEP team should discuss and try different
devices. There are different needs that need to be taken into consideration. Each
member of the IEP team has different knowledge of the student and should be able to

11. Ipads in the Primary Classroom
The introduction of the iPad/Tablet in Schools In 2010, apple introduced it s newest
technology, the iPad, which promised to bring mobile technology into every home
and classroom. With the introduction of the iPad comes new considerations for
learning and pedagogy. (Sheppard, 2011) McKenna (2012) suggests that the internet
is as common a school fixture as lockers and library books. Additionally schoolwork
is one of the most common activities performed online. One of the motivators for
schools to adopt iPads was the ability to use interactive textbooks. The portability of
the iPad made it not only easier to carry than several text books, but easier to use. The
other motivator to iPads and digital textbooks is that the interactive features and
capabilities. Digital textbooks can be updated to contain the most current information.
Pedagogical shift VS. Technology Implementation An appropriate pedagogical
framework is necessary to incorporate iPads into the classroom (McKenna, 3, 2012) It
is important that educators are aware of the difference between technology
integration which involves new literacies and curriculum integration. Newman (2013)
notes (as cited in Hutchinson, Beschorner, Schmidt Crawford, 2012) that research
indicates that much of the technology used in literacy classroom is in the form of
technology integration as opposed to curriculum integration.

One of the most obvious changes Mikhail Gorbachev had on the Soviet Union is
how he worked towards reforming their economy. He acknowledged and faced the
issue head on. Gorbachev realized that the Soviet Union s economy was focused

States President Ronald Reagan to discuss limiting both countries weapons. Although
these talks weren t all successful, they were still a sign of great progress compared to
the relationship the two countries had previously had.
Another one of the many things Mikhail Gorbachev is remembered for is his policy of
glasnost, which means openness. Unlike his predecessors, Gorbachev believed that

However, exponential growth does not last long in the nature. Exponential growth is
bad since continuously high reproduction rate for a species places extreme pressure
on ecosystems. Logistic growth curve explains how exponential growth is stopped by
limiting factors like natural resources. A populationmight grow sharply at the
beginning but as the limiting factors (like water, space, food, predators, and
disease) come into play, the growth levels off (Withgott Brennan, 2009, p. 85). As
for human population, exponential growth is promoted by new medicines that
staved off many diseases, dependable supply of food all around the year through
scientific agriculture involving artificial fertilizers, and the eradication of predators.
As for the limiting factors, lack of urban space, collapse of habitats supporting
human life, war, occasional epidemics (like AIDS or flu), and declining fertility of
overused agricultural areas are all serious obstacles to higher population growth.
3.Compare predictions for human population growth in developed countries versus
developing countries. Why is it difficult to predict the growth of Earth s human

is exponential human growth?
Human population and its dynamics have very important implications for the nature.
Exponential human growth would have disastrous effects on the nature because a

17. Social Policy Vs Noncontributory
There are two types of social policy, contributory and noncontributory. Each created
as a result of the economic depression in the 1930s. Contributory programs are
funded by taxes or other payments payed by all individuals that are eligible to
receive the benefits from the program. The biggest and most known one being social
security. Social Security is funded by the taxes workers pay based on their income.
The current tax rate for Social Security is 12.4% total, 6.2% for the employer and
6.2% for the employee (IRS). The employee pays that out of their income knowing
that future employees will pay the tax and they will receive the benefits when they
retire. On the other hand noncontributory programs are used on a need basis. not
based on if the recipient contributed to the program. The more colloquial term used is
welfare. The largest anti poverty noncontributory program is Supplemental Nutrition

costing the US billions of dollars. After the Soviet Union fell apart, the once

trade organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO). The WTO was

18. Notes On Writing And Writing
From Reading To Writing Throughout my life, writing has been a positive influence.
Writing was a coping mechanism and it truly helped to form the thoughts I wanted to
say, although I was never able to verbalize them. Reading and writing were not
pastimes until the sixth grade, when I learned that I had a hidden talent for writing
journals. The teacher gave the class an assignment to journal about what our
perception of a typical day was. The writer within came out in the paper offered, and
the teacher was elated with what I had written. All I needed was that little push from
that assignment, and my love for writing took off. I was also interested in reading
(more so then, than now). An interest in Stephen Kingbooks began in ninth grade. I
loved the way he used his words to paint a picture, showing the reader what he was
thinking. The second part of my writing journey started with King. At the time, my
writing consisted of journaling my feelings and thoughts, however, I needed more
than that. I had what it took to write stories not novels like King, but short stories
which conveyed a message which I wanted to impart to the people who read them.
Like Stephen King, I wrote horror stories, (he was the only author I read at that
point in time). If I recall correctly, I wrote one story per day. While journaling was
nice, I arrived at the finding that writing stories fit my style; imagination allowed for
the creation of images that lived in my mind. There are several

The rivalry in this industry is high with the four top Pc vendors Hewlett Packard,

Even though it was Apple who founded the first personal computer it was IBM that

every time this occurred these merged companies would have more market share and
more capital to help their business.

attributes so I would say threat of substitutes is high.

22. Tangled Stereotypes
SUMMARY The movie I chose to watch and evaluate is called Tangled. Tangled is
a Disney movie and is fairly new; the movie was released in 2010. The plot of the
story is based on a princess named Rapunzel who has been locked in a tower by her
mother for her whole life. Rapunzel has seventy foot long, magical hair that heals
people when she sings. She is about to turn eighteen and for her birthday, she wants
to go outside to see the sky lanterns that the kingdom puts on every year for the lost
princess. On the day before her birthday, the kingdom s most wanted thief, Flynn
Rider, climbs her tower to hide from the kingdom s guards who is chasing him for
stealing something. After Rapunzel sends her mother away to get her a present she
wanted,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Disney does not really have Disney princes who they glorify. The other main
character is the evil mom, which is a pretty common role for women in these types
of movies. The kingdom s most wanted criminal, Flynn Rider, takes Rapunzel to a
pub called The Snuggly Duckling and every single character in there is a man.
They are all represented as mean and guilty. The gender roles portrayed in the
movie are best fit with the cultural and social constructionist perspective. The
cultural perspective is because of how Flynn has to take care of Rapunzel because
she does not know anything about the real world. Rapunzel is dependent of him.
This is cultural because America has a tendency to see families this way. Another
way is that throughout the whole movie, the only females are Rapunzel, the evil
mom, and her real mom, which we see for only a few seconds. It is a pretty male
dominated movie, which is also common to see in our culture. In every Disney
princess movie, the princess has an animal sidekick and in this case, there are two
and they are both males. It is easy to see that this American made film has a lot of
culture content in it. Though it is based at somewhere else, we can see the
traditional American culture; the song When Will My Life Begin can help us see
that perspective because she sings about cleaning and dancing and other feminine
things. From a social constructionist perspective, we can define gender in this
movie. As I mentioned before, though it is supposed to be about Rapunzel, it
actually ends up being a lot about Flynn. Flynn actually opens the movie and
narrates. In the song Mother Knows Best, the evil mom talks about how the world
is so cruel and a little lady like Rapunzel would have no chance of survival. In our
textbook, The Gendered Society Reader, there is an article titled Pink Frilly

2016 Taco USA : Gustavo Arellano s Response to a Tater Tot Burrito Taco USA:
How Mexican Food Became More American Than Apple Pie was written in 2012
by Gustavo Arellano, a prolific food author for the Orange County newspaper OC
Weekly. This article originally appeared as an online publication in Reason
Magazine. Arellano has written books about Mexican food and its role in the
American experience. His writings explain how this genre of cuisine has evolved
and transformed as it has spread geographically throughout the United States.
Growing up in Orange County California with two Hispanic parents, Arellano
experienced firsthand the transformation of traditional Mexican dishes into the tex
mex that most American families are familiar with today. The online news site,
Reason Magazine, originally published this article to accommodate to an audience
of readers who want to be informed but also entertained by the news. These readers
care about what is happening in society but are not considered scholars on the topics
presented. Although the readers of Reason Magazine might not have any formal
knowledge about food and its role in culture, all of them have experienced the
importance of a meal in their everyday lives. The author uses the experience and
background of his audience to show them the importance and prevalence of Mexican
food in the American culture. In Taco USA Arellano uses personal stories, ethnic
language, and historical information to show his
24. Starbucks Globalization And Globalization
Four million people worldwide make their daily stop at Starbucks in the desperate
need for a coffee fix, just don t forget to ask them to hold the side of exploitation,
modern slavery and deforestation. Starbucks has evolved and itself become an icon of
globalisation, symbolising the role of corporations in combatting the consumerist
society that is the West and exploiting the rest of the world, particularly the
vulnerable and poverty stricken Global South. Thus, the contention of this essay is to
highlight that the new globalised world has resulted in the exploitation of the Global
South, in order to fulfil the consumerist society that is the Global North. This
exploitation is exemplified by Starbucks, one of the largest corporations in... Show

Workers earn two cents a pound for picking berries, says Eric Hahn of the Chicago
based U.S./Guatemala Labor Education Project, whilst Starbucks turns around and
sells a pound of Guatemalan coffee beans for nine dollars (Zielinski, 1995).
However, Alex Singleton, a fellow at the Adam Smith Institute claimed that
Starbucks has done more to lift coffee farmers out of poverty than almost anyone
else including Oxfam and the do gooders, (Davis, 2008). Believing that the answer
to development is not large amounts of foreign aid [rather] it s getting these
countries to engage in the global market, and Starbucks helps that (Davis, 2008).
Certainly, Starbucks has provided work for farmers living in poverty. Although,
Starbucks relationship with the farmers was solely developed for the purpose of
exploiting and using these farmers and their workers to gain maximum profit by
paying $0.57 per pound of coffee sold to the farmers, that s 2.2 per cent of the $26
per pound it sells for in the United States (Davis, 2008). Thus, not only are Starbucks
exploiting the poverty stricken farmers of Guatemala through underpaying them, but
they are also forced to work in virtual slave conditions in an unsafe and unsanitary
environment. Hence, Starbucks uses the Globalised world to

ESTERIFICATION OF ROSIN TO MAKE ESTER GUM
Esterification : It is a reaction between alcohols and carboxylic acids to produce
esters.
The carboxylic acid group of a rosin acid can be converted to an ester through a
reaction with various alcohols. The alcohols typically used to make rosin esters are
given below. The molecular weight and functionality of the alcoholdetermines the
softening point of the subsequent ester. Glycerol with three reactive sites is the most
commonly used alcohols. Methanol with a single hydroxyl group and tri ethylene
glycol with two reactive sites are used to produce liquid and low softening point
esters.

Lacquer is a wood polish; it is the chemical added to wood to give it the smooth and
shiny properties. Without it, the wood of a piano would be a lot more difficult to
work with, shrinking the lifespan of the common piano by years if not decades.
Without lacquer, the piano and other hammered string instruments may have never
become the influential instruments they are today. WHAT IS LACQUER
EXACTLY? Lacquer is a polymer of many different bases that when coated on a
wooden substance, offers a layer of protection and gloss to a piece of wood. The
most common lacquer used on piano frames is a urushiol based lacquer. Urushiol is

26. Language Shapes Our Society s Communication And
Thoughts
Language shapes our society s communication and thoughts in more ways than one.
It is constantly evolving, which is why it is important to be mindful of what is said
anywhere one may be. Words that may not typically offend one person may be
hurtful to someone else. Many of the people that are most forgotten about are those
with disabilities, minor or severe. Since person first language has been defined, it has
given a voice and boosted the self esteem to many of those that society often forgets.
Through time we have come to understand that Person First Language is important
for the equality and acceptance of people with disabilities.
Throughout history, people with disabilities have always been victimized. The bible
tells many tales of people who were disabled. In these stories, they were referred to as
crippled (Charles 31). The stereotype of disability has evolved from people being
referred to as crippled to Disreputables , which were people used as entertainment
in the middle ages (Charles 34), then to Waste Humanity , which were people that
were sterilized and killed because they were deemed unfit to live in the mid 1900s
(Charles 38 39). This gives insight to the evolution of a problem that is just recently
being addressed. Today, calling people crippled, disreputables, and waste humanity is
considered dehumanizing. People in communities were not properly educated or
prepared to deal with people who were mentally or physically different. Awareness

27. A Satirical Article On Cultural Relativism Essay
Cultural relativism is the way in which our individual beliefs and opinions should
be understood by others of the same or of different cultures. The Charlie Hebdo
media murders in France January 2015 is a fine example of the way in which the
views of the world are diverse depending on different cultural perspectives. Charlie
Hebdo is a satirical weekly newspaper, it takes contentious world issues such as
religion and politics and holds them up to the world with the intent to disgrace
individuals, cooperation s and society in order to get them to improve. Due to its
almost antagonistic manner it was a successful target of a terrorist attack . Two
armed gunmen stormed the office and killed eleven members of staff claiming they
were defending the Prophet Muhammad.
Growing up in a country like New Zealand where freedom of expression is not only
defended but encouraged, it is easy to understand why Charlie Hebdo chooses to
adopt that same right to use as a platform to create humour out of democracy and
religion. Their main aim being to reflect current events in a satirical way in order to
shame society into changing. Some of this humour can be mistaken for bigotry and
disrespect by minorities such as Muslim s, however the newspaper does not aim
directly toward the minor religions of France, rather religion as a whole. According
to the Central Intelligence Agency the percentage of each Religion is vastly
disjointed Roman Catholic 83% 88%, Protestant 2%, Jewish 1%, Muslim
28. Leper In John Knowles A Separate Peace
Out of all the characters of A Separate Peace by John Knowles, I would be Elwin
Lepellier or who is more commonly known as Leper for several reasons. One
reason is that we re both artistic. For example, during Chapel, Leper was busy
sketching birds and trees, and thus, he didn t hear the announcement for wanted
volunteers to shovel the snow out of the railroads. Similarly, I enjoy sketching or
drawing in my free time or when I m bored. Another reason for why Leper and I are
similar is that we re peaceful. For instance, during a Blitzball game, Gene was
desperate to pass the ball to anybody, so the boys wouldn t maul him, in which he
soon spots Leper. Leper! I threw the ball past a few heads at him. Taken by surprise,

Lastly, Leper and I are similar to how we handle pressure terribly. One example is
in the woods of Vermont, where Leper describes to Gene about his predicament in
the army, including his hallucinations, such as a man possibly coughing up his
stomach next to Leper at night, alongside his malnourishment and sleep
deprivation. Leper continues, recounting how one day, he supposedly saw the
Corporal transform into a woman. I was looking at him as close as I m looking at
you and his face turned into a woman s face and I started to yell for everybody, I
began to yell so that everyone would see it too, I didn t want to be the only one to
see a thing like that, I yelled louder and louder to make sure everyone within reach
of my voice would hear you can see there wasn t anything crazy in the way I was
thinking, can t you, I had a good reason for everything I did, didn t I but I couldn t
yell soon enough, or loud enough, and when somebody did finally come up to me,
it was this man with the cough who slept in the next cot, and he was holding a

wasn t a broom, it was a man s leg which had been cut
29. Colors in The Great Gatsby
Colors are very apparent in The Great Gatsby. They often show up as descriptions
to many important items throughout the book, and make those items resemble
symbols. The color white confuses the reader, and often causes him/her to rethink
their logic. It describes false purity and deception within something, which is very
apparent in the character Daisy in this novel. The color grey gives the reader a
comparison, and that is of humans to machines. Something that is lifeless is
described as grey. After that, there is the final color of blue, something that is very
dreamy. This is mostly associated with the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg but is also
seen in other things as well. The colors white, grey, and blue cause the reader to
rethink this whole book, and are associated with the most important symbols, in this
novel. It is colors that truly make The Great Gatsby, a marvelous book to read. White
describes a falseness of purity of something that is deceiving. This is shown in the
beginning of the novel when the brazen Jordan Baker and Daisy Buchanan are
both introduced to Nick Carraway. ...that was as cool as their white dresses and
their impersonal eyes in the absence of all desire (Fitzgerald 12). This quote
includes the color white to describe their dresses, meaning that these two girls
Jordan and Daisy are not what they seem to be. Another quote is when they are at
Gatsby s florid house, and Nick is leaving. Then I went out of the room and down the

This is a literature analysis and in depth exploration into the life of the great author
and Nobel Prize winner, Doris Lessing. In an interesting journey that shows how
her early childhood affected her, we see how she was conditioned to feel the way
she did about social injustice. As a young girl her experiences growing up white in
an African dominated land that was actually ruled unfairly by the white majority,
shaped her as an advocate. . The way her mother raised her, not only showed her how
marriage at that time was male dominated, but it also completely turned her against
the typical housewife and motherly role. She published her first novelin 1950 that

Lessing was put in a rigidly strict convent school, where she was constantly terrified
into obedience with tall tales of hell and eternal damnation by fire. She was later
shipped off to an all girls high school in Salisbury, Zimbabwe s capital and most
populated city. Shortly after arriving, at the tender age of 13, Lessing dropped out
school and promptly ended her formal education. Lessing ordered books from
London that not only helped her to self educate but it also expanded her imagination.
Her early reading included Dickens, Stevenson, and Kipling. Lessing accepted a job
as Nursemaid, and left home at 15 to escape her mother. During that time she also
wrote short stories, two of them got sold and published by magazines in South Africa.
In 1937 she moved to Salisbury and met Frank Wisdom, whom she married and had

Only 5% of United States high schools teach computer science, the study of the
principles and use of computers, despite its critical importance. Even as the
enrollment in science, technology, engineering, and math classes have increased in
the past 20 years, the number of students enrolled in computer science has actually

science. In these 20 years, 1 billion computers have been built which makes computer

Universities are already starting to require computer science classes, but this creates
the question: How should computer science courses be implemented in education
before University? An optimal solution must teach social problem solving skills,
increase the functionality of technology, and provide an understanding of the future.
The time at which computer science is introduced must also be considered to ensure
students have enough prior background knowledge in other related disciplines and a
basic understanding of what computer can and cannot do. In order to properly
implement computer science in education, it should be required in high school
education and teach the ubiquitous relationship that computer science has with the
social, technological, and futuristic aspects of the world.
Computer science is bound to have social impacts because of its ubiquitous nature.
The most influential of these impacts is the introduction of computational thinking.
Computational Thinking is a process that generalizes a solution to open ended
problems. Open ended problems encourage full, meaningful answers based on
multiple variables, which are derived using abstraction and automation. When solving
open ended problems, computer scientists abstract notions from both the physical and
theoretical worlds. Unlike mathematical notions which only consider theory,
computer science combines both

37. The Ethical Issues Of Downloading Pirated Music And Films
We all know that downloading pirated music and films is illegal, but what exactly is
it? The term piracy refers to the copying and selling of music, films and other media
illegally; in other words you are copying and selling copyrighted media without the
permission of the original owner (NiDirect, n.d.). With the massive growth of the
internet and its ability to store and capture vast amounts of data, we have become
much more reliable on information systems in all aspects of life, but it does not come
without the risk of information technology being used unethically. With the number
of IT breakthroughs in recent years the importance of ethicsand human values has
been underemphasised often resulting in various consequences. Not surprisingly one
of the many public concerns about the ethical use of IT is that millions of people
have downloaded music and movies at no charge and in apparent violation of
copyrightlaws at tremendous expense to the owners of those copyrights (Reynolds,
Ethics in Information Technology, 2015). This essay covers the ethical issues of
downloading pirated music and films and the impact it has on music corporations and
recording and film companies.
So what is ethics? George W. Reynolds states that ethics is a set of beliefs about
right and wrong behaviour within a society and that ethical behaviour conforms to
generally accepted norms with almost all of them being universal. As we all know,

how people treated one another in that era. However, in both modern society and
the past, the ideas associated with slavery, education, religion, societal beliefs, and

society. Especially in Nora s case, her whole life she was treated as a human doll, a
trophy first to her father and then to her husband, Torvald. She is considered a middle
class womanand is expected to keep a certain image both in public and with her
husband to keep his reputation and the familys social status intact and be entirely
dependent on the man of the house at the time to provide for her. She spent her whole

She was a doll on a shelf and was only played with whenever her husband felt she
was worthy of his attention. Nora tried to put up a front and keep up the picture
perfect family so that everyone, including herself, would not see the truth and the
unhappiness that she felt inside. Torvald dehumanized her by referring to her as
his little Nora , a squirrel, a skylark, a spendthrift, a child, etc. and does not
acknowledge the fact that she is a grown woman who a born him three children
and is very capable of living and thinking for herself as an individual. He expected
her to look and act the way he wanted and also to be at his beckon call sexually,
physically, and emotionally. He limited the number of macaroons she could eat
and also made a comment about her duty to please him romantically. She was so
used to her life being the way it was, she didn t know any different so she didn t
realize she had so much more potential to find true happiness in her life. At the end
of the play, she finally realized just how unhappy she was and that her whole life
had been a lie, Our home has been nothing but a playroom. I have been your doll wife
, just as at home I was papa s doll child; and here my children have been my dolls
(Ibsen 1403). She was blind to the fact that she was just a shell of the person she
could be, completely used to the treatment of her prideful and self absorbed husband
who refused to see her as
41. Upgrading Data Communication At The Classroom
Upgrading data communication in the classroom would be an appropriate
technological advantage because research indicates that broadband and cloud
computing are transforming education. The outdated teaching tools that we grew up
with (i.e. chalkboards and hardback books) are now being replaced with interactive
digital content delivered through high speed broadband using blackboard and e
books. This means elementary school students can explore the surface of the sun
through high definition video as they learn about the solar system. Furthermore,
middle schoolchildren can experience history lessons through interactive videos and
high schoolstudents can discover geometry through gaming (Robyler, M. D. Edwards,
J., 2000, p. 79). Consequently, accessing broadband for digital learning is a necessity
for students to have a chance to compete in todays technological society. From a
pedagogical standpoint, updating communications in the classroom creates an
environment of enrichment and engages students actively in the learning process.
Upgrading the data communications in the classroom from a programmatic
perspective enables students and teachers to quickly access the database, monitor
seismographic data, and establish electronic pen pals in Latin America (Picciano,
2011, p. 110).

42. Analysis Of Frankenstein And Nabokov s The Real Life Of...
Both Shelley s Frankenstein and Nabokov s The Real Life of Sebastian Knight
investigate problems of reality, strongly suggesting that real knowledge of someone
cannot exist or is at best inaccessible. However, while Nabokov and Frankenstein
suggest that one may never be able to know the real life of another person, perhaps
one s failed attempts to perfectly capture that reality reflectionsor interpretations of
reality, that is function as the most meaningful reality for the would be knower. V. s
definition of real itself makes real knowledge an impossibility. While V. never
explicitly defines real, readers can piece together an approximate understanding from
the metaphors he uses to express his lack of access to the realSebastian. Although V.
could describe the way he [Sebastian Knight] walked, or laughed, or sneezed, these
facts would be no more than sundry bits of cinema film cut away by scissors and
having nothing in common with the essential drama (Larsen 16). Characters know
much about Sebastian but he himself escapes [them] (Larsen 28 9). It s this essential
drama or he himself that V. identifies as real the core essence of someone or
something. And after a conversation with Sebastian, V. longed for no earthly reason
(...) to say something real, something with wings and a heart, suggesting that
something real is otherworldly, incorporeal ( no earthly reason , wings and a heart ),
and thus beyond V. s ability to know. Perhaps what Nabokov terms
43. stayin alive Essay
In the book Stayin Alive historian Jefferson Cowie writes a very engaging
explanation of the political and cultural aspects that effected white workers economic
individuality and what damaged a vibrant, multi cultural, and gender conscious
conceptualization of class (Stayin Alive, Cowie. 72). A single portion of the
narrative touches on the rise of the New Right while another tracks the breakdown of
working class cultural idols. New Deal liberalism and the growth of a New Right
founded upon a white working class cultural conservatism are both not a new story. In
Stayin Alive, the essential catastrophe of the 1970s was not only the Watergate
incident, stagflation, racial conflict, and the local scuffles over the Vietnam War,
however;... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cowie ponders on a sequence of strikes and upsurges by younger workers, like the
Lords town autoworkers strike of 1972 that was called an Industrial Woodstock. The
movements that took place in regards of racial and sexual equality gave a chief
opportunity to link identity politics with social class and Cowie identifies numerous
moments when these possible opportunities could be seen in the revolts of farm
workers, textile workers, and office workers. As narrated in the second chapter,
their failure was summarized in the McGovern campaign of 1972. As this was going
on, Richard Nixon had been courting white working class voters by underlining
cultural values in place of economic interests, employing the new southern strategy
to attract George Wallace supporters along with those besieged by antiwar protests
and social deviance. Nixon further dominated working class populism by signifying
himself in disagreement to the stereotypical ideal of Northeastern liberal elites, as
the titleholders of hard working taxpayers who are oppressed by a union of
underclasses.
A key strength of Stayin Alive that shows why the white working class abandoned
New Deal Liberalism is Cowie s discussion of how popular music and Hollywood
films did not only mirror the social changes of the 1970s but became matters of
struggle in their own subject. Country music,
44. Huckleberry Finn Analysis Essay
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Analysis Essay
The situation of the orphan is truly the worst, you re a child, powerless, with no
protectors or guides. It s the most vulnerable position you can be in, to see
someone overcome those odds tells us something about the human spirit. They are
often depicted as the kindest or most clever of characters. Michelle Boisseau
describes how important these types of characters are. In a Sunday Times article,
she states that a lot of the stories and novels are considered to be apologues about
orphans becoming the hero of the book. Huck s story is quite like this subject. The
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a novel written by Mark Twain, it s about a boy
named Huckleberry Finn, who sets ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another example of satire is the incident of Boggs in chapter twenty one. After
Boggs, the town drunk, had clearly annoyed Colonel Sherburn with his nonsense,
Sherburn had no choice but to pull the trigger on Boggs, desperate to kill him.
When Boggs is shot dead, everyone jumps with excitement, all appalled of
witnessing a shooting. Twain analyzes how the loafers imitate Boggs calamity. As
Huck sees this chaos in town, he describes the scene, The streets was full, and
everybody was excited. Everybody that had seen the shooting was telling how it
happened, and there was a big crowd packed around each other... One long lanky
man, marked down the place where Boggs stood, and where Sherburn stood, they
watched him mark the places on the ground with his cane, and then he stood up
and straight and stiff where Sherburn had stood, frowning and having his hat brim
down over his eyes, and sung out, Boggs! and then fetched his cane down slow to
a level, and says Bang! (Pg. 146). This quote supports the theme because here
people have enjoyed witnessing a real shooting. The people feel the need to
celebrate and make fun of something they don t realize it is something tragic and
wrong. Twain has this quote as an example of man versus society because it has
Huck exposed to a
