1 INTRO &
DEFINATION
“Company culture
is the continuous
pursuit of building
the best, most
talented, and
happiest team we
possibly can.”
Andrew Wilkinson
WHAT IS BUSINESS CULTURE ?
Corporate culture refers to the beliefs and behaviors
that determine how a company's employees and
management interact and handle outside business
transactions. Often, corporate culture is implied, not
expressly defined, and develops organically over time
from the cumulative traits of the people the company
hires. A company's culture will be reflected in its dress
code, business hours, office setup, employee benefits,
turnover, hiring decisions, treatment of clients, client
satisfaction, and every other aspect of operations.
• Patience is a waste of time.
• Competition is what they love because it brings out the
best in them.
• Change is good.
• Doing things matters most rather then saying something.
• Ignorant of other countries and language.
• Appreciate persistence.
• Desperation or fear : loss of job, home and health
insurance.
To understand their culture we need to understand about
them first.
WHAT DEFINE AMERICANS ?
2 WORK ETHICS &
DIFFERENT ASPECTS
The Future is more important than the present. Success is the
highest value. The AMERICAN DREAM:
WORK ETHICS
 Money, big house, status, possessions, fame, respect.
 Action is the key to Success. To not be busy considered lazy.
 They like to say “rules are meant to be broken,” but never “laws are
meant to be broken”
 Achievement based respect, not seniority
 Dress are formal in business and informal socially
Negative Aspect
AMERICAN BUSINESS
 Relatively limited government
regulation- pro business orientation.
 Favourable tax structure.
 Access to venture capital- pro risk.
 Can-do spirit which encourages
entrepreneurship.
 Huge consumption-oriented market.
Positive Aspect
 Tremendous Pressure
 Job insecurity
 Highly competitive- “Swim with the
shark without being eaten alive”
 Short term thinking
 Too much Hype
 Wall St. mentality- quick profits, little
responsibility, gambling, moral hazard.
3 BEHAVIOUR &
MORALITY
Punctuality is expected:
 15min is on time
 On time is late
 Late is unacceptable
Never ask someone’s age, income or weight
Never talk about race, gender or sexual orientation .
Personal space ½ meter minimum
Nicknames are common, its not a insult to them.
Formality like MR. or MRS. are rarely used in their culture.
Extrovert behavior is highly respected.
INTERPERSONAL BEHAVIOUR
Air kiss as a greeting only if
they know someone.
Hand Shake: Firm grip, pump 1-
3 times, grab elbow to
communicate sincerity and
closeness of relationship.
GREETINGS MEALS AND EVENTS
The person who invite pays the
bill.
Responding gain respect even if
they ‘NO’ to RSVP
Start and end time of event is
important. Not to be late but not
so early too.
Being self-assured and
confident without being
aggressive.
Loyalty- in spite of job
insecurity
Team player – Informative
Outgoing- Social &
enthusiastic people.
Toughness, Drive, Dedication
PERSONAL QUALITIES
Churches and civic organization
are meeting places for making
connection.
Being modest I public eye, it’s a
tradition
Appear to be Moral, but Morality
doesn’t extent to business Dealings
Example- Salary of CEO is 300
times the average worker- $12M is
average for CEO in fortune 500.
Billion of dollars have been stolen
from publics.
MORALITY
4 MEETING & HOW
THEY THINK
They assume everybody understand it if nobody responds. So asking question or being
interrupted is not that bad.
Agendas are critical, they stick to them.
Exchanging business card is casual.
Negotiation is fast with many condition and demands.
Clarity is important but also discussion should be on point.
Time is money so they keep it short.
BUSINESS MEETINGS
SOCIALIZING
 Voluntary organisation are often meeting places
 Americans are joiners- Rotary Club, etc.
 Gentleman sports- Meeting at Tennis, Squash, Golf, Hunting, Skiing
 Smoking is frowned upon.
 Expected to adapt to American value.
 TOPIC FOR CONVERSATION
o Sports- know the situation of the local teams from TV
programmes.
o Accomplishment of both the nation and the company which
you are dealing with.
o Find common interests – Hobbies
o Talks about taxes by the Govt. but never go into Politics.
 Positive thought are rewarded and negative thought are often penalized.
 They fail to see a situation in critical light and over-estimate what they are
capable of- since individual performance is the basis of their survival.
 Analysis/Criticism can be viewed as negativism.
 Always think positive and believe in its rewards.
 Example- The American economy is down and people are losing their jobs and
yet they are expected to be positive which may help them to get a Job.
 Think big and keep thinking about increasing. Think more than enough.
THINKING
