What is a Summary?
A summary is a brief explanation of a
piece of writing. It captures the key
points of a passage or article.
16
Copyright © 2013 Tata Consultancy Services Limited. All Rights
Reserved
How to Write a Summary
 A summary is not a rewrite of the original
piece and is usually not very long.
 Use your own words to express briefly the
main idea and relevant details of the piece
you have read.
 Ask:Who? What?When? Where? Why?
How?
 Read the introductory paragraph carefully
and look for the main or central idea.
 Mention the title and author of the
passage.
17

Steps
1. Read the article to be summarized and be sure you
understand it.
2. Make an outline of the article. Note the major points.
3. Write a first draft of the summary without looking at
the article.
4. Do not copy straight from the passage. Rewrite using
your own words.
5. Keep the first draft to about ¼ of the length of the
original passage.
6. Check to see you have covered all points
7. Never include your own ideas or opinion
8. In case you have missed out any points rewrite and
create a second draft
