15th century music was dominated by the Franco-Flemish school, including composers Guillaume Dufay, Gilles Binchois, Antoine Busnois, and John Dunstable. Sacred music like masses, motets, and magnificats were popular, and the mass transitioned from individual sections to a unified whole structure based on cantus firmus. Secular forms like rondeaux, ballades and virelais were also composed. Composers began writing in homophonic textures with parallel harmony to enhance understandability of liturgical lyrics. Guillaume Dufay was a pioneering composer who potentially developed techniques like fauxbourdon and helped bridge late medieval and Renaissance musical styles.
Early music generally comprises Medieval music (500–1400) and Renaissance music (1400–1600) but can also include Baroque music (1600–1750). Early music is a broad musical era for the beginning of Western art music.
