Frederick Chopin was a Polish composer and pianist who was one of the leading figures of the Romantic era. He began composing and performing as early as age 6, writing his first piece and giving his first public performance by age 18. Chopin specialized in writing solo piano works as well as pieces combining piano with other instruments. His compositions drew inspiration from Polish folk dances like polonaises and mazurkas but were more technically challenging than typical dances of the time.
