Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

UNIT 2 - WHAT IS BULLYING?
B3. Patrick’s Story
Patrick was a student who became upset when things began to go wrong
between himself and some boys in his class. He did not really understand why he
was picked on because he never did anything to anybody else or said anything to
annoy other people. Although Patrick was a bit of a loner - he enjoyed playing
computer games and reading - other boys in his class were nice enough to him.
Out of the blue things changed. It started out as slagging. Patrick was not
very good at sports and sometimes in P.E. class when he missed shots or lost the
ball to the other team he was called names. One boy, Jim, who was better at
sport, was nasty to him and made fun of the way he played. Other boys laughed
when Jim called Patrick “dopey” or “dumbo”. Being called names made Patrick
feel even more awkward and less confident when he was playing. Jim and another
boy started pushing him around and deliberately tackling him hard. They kicked
him and warned him not to tell. He was threatened that if he did he would be
beaten up after school. Patrick was very frightened by this and started making
excuses to avoid playing games. He would deliberately forget his P.E. gear or
write notes saying that he had a sprained ankle.
Soon he was being slagged in class if he answered any teachers’
questions. He was called a “lick” and a “swot” and a bigger number of boys
joined in the laughing. Pieces of paper or pens were thrown at him while the
teacher wasn’t looking and drawings were sent around the class. One of the
most hurtful things was when his mother was slagged by the other boys. They
also jeered him because his sister was going out with a foreign student. He felt
very ashamed that he could not defend himself or answer back. He did not want to
tell at home because he did not want to worry his mother and he was afraid that his
father would give out to him for not standing up for himself.
It was not long before Patrick was being ignored and left out of things by
everybody. He was never picked for teams and never asked along to matches or
other fun activities outside school. He felt bad all the time. He could not
concentrate in class and his work started to suffer. He could not get the bullying
out of his mind and couldn’t sleep properly. Yet he still would not tell.
He received silent phone calls and abusive text messages every day.
Hate messages were left on his “Facebook” page and videos of him were posted
“YouTube”. The thing that made him feel worst of all was when Jim started calling
him gay. Soon everybody in the class and in his year joined in. Even students he
did not know in other years pushed him around and called him gay. The last straw
was when people shouted it out in the street after him. He just felt that he couldn’t
take it anymore.

Bullying Role Play
It is in between classes and the students in 2A are waiting in their
classroom for the teacher to arrive.
If you don’t have a part, do not join in, laugh or cheer on the bullying.
The Characters
John is being bullied by a group of students. His books are knocked off
his desk and he is being called gay.
Ger is the biggest bully in the group. He always starts it off and the rest
of the group are afraid to stand up to him.
Ray knocks John’s books off the desk. He thinks Ger is really cool and
enjoys the “messing” with John.
Eddie calls John gay because he’s afraid of Ger and Ray and thinks if
he doesn’t join in the messing they’ll start on him next. He doesn’t like
what they’re doing to John but is too afraid to stop.
Joe, Kate & Edel laugh when the lads start bullying John.
Mary asks the lads to stop bullying John.
Anne supports Mary and asks the boys to stop too.
Frank supports Anne and Mary and decides after class to tell the
teacher privately what is happening.
20. 20
B11. Discussion
As a class, discuss the questions then fill in your answers.
How did you feel about your role?
Do you think Mary, Ann and Frank were good bystanders? Why?
When might it become unsafe for Ann, Mary and Frank to continue
intervening as bystanders?
What should they do in that situation?
Are Joe, Kate and Edel making things better or worse?
21. 21
UNIT 5 – HOW TO TELL
B12. Advice For Telling
I’m Too Afraid To Tell!
Admitting that you are being bullied is never easy. You
may be ashamed that you are not able to stand up for
yourself, or you may feel that it is your own fault for being
bullied. The main reason people don’t want to tell is because
they are afraid that the bullying will get worse because they
have “ratted”. Bullies know this, and rely on people being
frightened.
Secrecy is what allows the bullying to continue.
Who to Tell?
The first step is to tell someone.
If you tell a friend they may understand and give you support.
But the most important thing is to tell an adult you can trust,
such as a Parent or Teacher. Research has shown that it
almost always takes an adult to get it sorted.
Telling Safely
“Ratting” means telling tales to get others into trouble.
People who “rat” feel they have got revenge on another
person and are pleased that the person feels bad. Telling
about bullying is not telling tales. It is telling to keep safe. A
person who tells about bullying is doing everyone a great
favour because telling will help stop people suffering at the
hands of a bully.
22. 22
Telling at Home
Ask a parent to telephone the school, write a letter or
speak to a teacher. You may write a letter yourself and
post it to a trusted teacher. You may get a friend to tell on
your behalf.
Telling at School
Your school may have a system for telling teachers without
anybody else knowing, e.g. an anti- bullying box or regular
questionnaires. There may be certain teachers you can go to
quietly or you may be able to tell a Senior Student. You
could slip a note into a homework copy and hand it up to a
teacher, or ask for help in a questionnaire.
