Fact
Native speakers do not make
‘erorrs’.They make mistakes.
Non-native speakers make ‘erorrs’ and/
or mistakes.
(according to Corder)
Insights/understanding
Speakers are intuitively aware of the
production process.
Speakers often self-edit or self-
repair the output during the process
of production.
Competence vs. Performance ???
Self-repairs
Instant/immediate repairs
replace with the correct word.
e.g,he is good at play football -playing
football.
Fresh starts
backtrack and begin the utterance all
over again
e.g,one plus two equals four_no_that’s two.
Hesitations
Pervade a great deal of contemporary
conversation,are not mistakes.they
seem to indicate to lack of fluency.
Like,uh,um,let me see,you know,well.
Examples
I think it costs about…uh…20 dollars.
I saw…oh…12 people at the party.

Second Language Acquisition (SLA)
The study of people acquire an
additional language ,often by means of
an analysis of errors they make
© Capital Community College
Mistake: The production of in
correct forms in speech or writing,
the result of factors such as
carelessness of fatigue (tiredness)
all speakers make mistake ,whether
they are native or non- native users
of the target language.
 Errors : The production of incorrect forms in
speech or writing by a non–native speaker of
a second language the result of incomplete
knowledge of the rules of that target
language .
Error are committed only by non-native
speakers (NNSs).Even when they are told
that they erred ,unlike the native speakers
NNSs do not immediately replace the
deviancy with the correct form.
(5) Feedback loop: The sensory
information the body provides
during the production of speech
which allows the speaker to monitor
and adjust the articulation of
individual .sound and words.
It demonstrates that speakers
(and writers) are firmly self-editing
.speakers are sensitive to what
stage of production process went
unsound .speakers and writers are
quickly capable of arranging
message .speakers can monitor and
quickly correct any mistakes.
© Capital Community College
Performance : words actually
spoken and written : the explicit,
physical manifestation of our
intuitive linguistic competence,
.It refers to the words we say or
write , the clear manifestation of our
ability in a language.
© Capital Community College
Competence: Implicit knowledge we have
about the language(s) we speak, e.g we can
easily identify an ungrammatical sentence
even though we may not be able to describe
what rule(s) it violates
.It describes our tacit, sensitive Knowledge
about the language or languages we have
mastered. At this final level of production,
competence monitors performance to
ensure that our production is accurate.
