BRIG was set up to allow radiation therapists with an interest in breast cancer treatment to share best practices, ideas, and research across the globe in order to improve radiotherapy techniques for breast cancer patients. BRIG is for qualified radiation therapists and currently has over 120 members from the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Dubai, and the USA. Members communicate primarily through email and a discussion group. The current work plan of BRIG is to publish the results of a member audit on techniques, develop learning resources, engage with other organizations, and facilitate coordinated research on breast irradiation.

Expo is the most significant annual health and social care event in the calendar, uniting more NHS and care leaders, commissioners, clinicians, voluntary sector partners, innovators and media than any other health and care event.
Expo 15 returned to Manchester and was hosted once again by NHS England. Around 5000 people a day from health and care, the voluntary sector, local government, and industry joined together at Manchester Central Convention Centre for two packed days of speakers, workshops, exhibitions and professional development.
This year, Expo was more relevant and engaging than ever before, happening within the first 100 days of the new Government, and almost 12 months after the publication of the NHS Five Year Forward View. It was also a great opportunity to check on and learn from the progress of Greater Manchester as the area prepares to take over a £6 billion devolved health and social care budget, pledging to integrate hospital, community, primary and social care and vastly improve health and well-being.

Adult survivorship: from concept to innovation
The National Cancer Survivorship Initiative (NCSI) is a partnership between the Department of Health, Macmillan Cancer Support and NHS Improvement. As part of this initiative, NHS Improvement is testing approaches to care and support that ensures that we are moving to a position of not only supporting recovery from their disease, but also their future health and wellbeing through sustaining that recovery. During the last few years a proof of principle has been established which if transferable from the test sites to other organisations will begin the process of spread across the NHS and provide national risk stratified effective pathways for breast, colorectal and prostate cancers.

Ten patients and ten healthcare practitioners provided feedback over five workshops. The workshops explored challenges with the current radiotherapy pathway and identified opportunities to empower patients and improve care. Analysis revealed patients often feel a lack of control and voice in care. Healthcare practitioners were concerned a support bra could impede monitoring skin reactions. The refined prototype and supplementary booklet aim to enhance patient involvement and communication during treatment. Further testing of the support bra and booklet is ongoing to evaluate their clinical feasibility.

A new webinar series for the jrp

SuPPORT 4 All study we need your help
This document summarizes the SuPPORT4All study, which aims to develop a support device to accurately position the breast during breast cancer radiation therapy. - 1. Breast radiotherapy Interest group (BRIG) Dr Heidi Probst Sheffield Hallam University
- 2. Why was BRIG set up? • Breast cancer accounts for a substantial proportion of the radiotherapy workload and many radiation therapists are developing specialist expertise in this field. • Radiotherapy technique for breast cancer varies considerably across UK centres. In a survey of radiotherapy departments in 1997 disparities in the technical application of treatment was identified. An example of variations in practice included the skin marking method employed and differences were apparent in the protocols for lung tissue allowed within the treatment portals. • There is evidence to suggest this wide variation in practice may still exist across centres.
- 3. Why was BRIG set up? And Who is it for? • The development of a Breast Radiotherapy Interest Group (BRIG) that has members from across the globe has the potential to allow the sharing of good practice, cross fertilisation of ideas, development of innovative approaches to current challenges in the delivery of radiotherapy for breast cancer patients and to drive forward co-ordinated research. • BRIG is for qualified Radiation Therapists/ Therapeutic Radiographers with an interest in breast cancer treatment.

- 7. What is our current work plan? • Our current work plan is to: 1. Update our database of techniques used across centres and across Countries to provide a resource for members. 2. Develop learning resources for the BRIG community. 3. To engage with other breast cancer organisations to facilitate sharing of knowledge and expertise in breast irradiation practice. 4. To take forward co-ordinated research activity to enhance the service for patients undergoing breast irradiation following a diagnoses of breast cancer.
