Breast Augmentation is the most fascinating
operative procedure in the history of medical
science, which has given great boost to the
Cosmetic Surgery, but along came a lot of
controversy as well.
Aesthetic Breast augmentation or augmentation
mammaplasty is a surgical procedure to increase the
size of the breast.

INDICATION
Augmentation Mammaplasty typically is performed to
enlarge small, underdeveloped breasts or breast that
have decreased in size, or atrophied, after childbearing
and breast feeding. It may also be done to balance
asymmetry that may result from post mastectomy
reconstruction. The extent of the procedure depends on
what changes are desired and what your surgeon deem
appropriate.

OPERATIVE PROCEDURES
Augmentation mammaplasty usually is performed
under general anesthetic, although a local
anesthetic, which numbs the area around the
breast, may be used. Medication to relieve tension
is given before the anesthetic allow you to be
comfortable during surgery. If a general anesthetic
has been administered, you will sleep through the
entire operation.

POSTOPERATIVE CARE
After surgery,pain that is easily
controlled by medication usually
will subside in a day or two. If you
have been admitted to a hospital,
you will be released within a couple
of days following the operation.


If dressings have been applied, they will be replaced
by a surgical bra in a few days. Sutures will be
removed within a week of surgery. Although the
surgeon has made every effort to keep scars as
inconspicuous as possible, they are the inevitable
results of surgery. In most cases, they will begin to
fade gradually and become barely noticeable.
Minimal swelling and discoloration of the breast
will disappear rapidly within a fortnight.

General Instruction
BEFORE SURGERY
1. All prescriptions and consultation consent forms
etc. given by the doctor should be filled 10 days
before surgery and taken as instructed.
2. Arrange for transportation to and from the
hospital on the say of surgery.

3. No Aspirin, aspirin containing medication or
alcoholic beverages 7 days before or after
surgery.
4. Expect to be in the hospital or clinic for a better
part of the day at least half an hour before the
schedule time.

DAY OF SURGERY
1. Nothing by mouth and wear comfortable clothes,
no panty hose. Also please wear a button down
shirt or sweater.
2. Please arrive at least half an hour before the given
time, make allowance for traffic delays.
3. Please shower and wash hair on the morning of
the surgery. Remove contact lenses, nail polish,
jewellery and all make up, while at home.

AFTER THE SURGERY
1. Once again no alcohol or aspirin containing
medication for seven days. Take diet as
prescribed.
2. Limit activities. Complete bed rest the evening
of surgery. Avoid quick movements, bending,
straining, lifting and if possible sneezing. If you
feel nausea contact doctor immediately and you
will be prescribed the necessary medicine.

AFTER THE SURGERY
3. Post operative visits: You will be seen in the
clinic at frequent intervals for the first few
weeks. The exact timing of these visits will vary
from individual depending on the healing
process.

Please make every attempt to keep these
appointments, since it is vitally important that we
closely monitor your healing. If you live in a distant
City we prefer you to stay in town for the first few
days after surgery.

DAY 1 – 10
For the first 10 days the patient is regarded as totally
convalescent pursuing a programme of relaxation
with activities limited to reading and watching TV.
If the patient has infants or young children under the
age of 3, it is insisted upon that she does not play an
active part in the care and management of them for
10 days.

AFTER THE SURGERY
DAY 11 – 20
For the following 10 days of convalescence, light
activities i.e. dusting and elementary cooking are
permitted. Driving a car is not for 2 weeks. Women
who are in a physically undemanding occupation
can return to work at the end of this period.

AFTER THE SURGERY
DAY 21 – 35
In the fourth and fifth week the patient should be
gradually returning to normal routine with the
exception of lifting, stretching and athletic
endeavors. At the end of 6 week the patient can
resume a normal life with exception of athletics
involving marked arm activities, e.g. tennis, bowling,
swimming and volleyball. Sexual activities involving
the breast should be avoided for same period of time
4-6 weeks.

CARE OF WOUND
Bra must be worn at all times for the first 2 weeks,
even in the bath.
Would to keep dry for the first 2 weeks. If swelling,
redness or extreme tenderness arises contact
Doctor. Muscular pain and discomfort can be
expected for a period of 2 to 3 weeks following
surgery
