This document outlines the topics and exercises covered in a series of classes on brave communication. The classes aim to help participants become more powerful and brave in their relationships by practicing understanding others, using "I" statements, and managing feelings. Key topics discussed include seeking to understand others, giving feedback when hurt, acknowledging feelings, practicing empathy, becoming aware of emotions, and reckoning with emotions through curiosity rather than denial. Participants are encouraged to explore how emotions were handled in their family of origin and ways they currently manage feelings.
A mini e-course to shift your mindset from powerless to powerful.
Personal power = options, opportunities, connections, authenticity, "being a voice and not an echo". When we feel power, we stop the settling in our jobs, relationships and life in general.

How its help me in my work? the road to success
In this talk on CD, youth speaker John Hilton III invites teenagers to stop making excuses and start accepting responsibility for their actions. 'While you are free to choose for yourself, you are not free to choose the consequences of your actions,' says Brother Hilton. He teaches listeners the language of responsibility to prepare our hearts to feel the Spirit. In a fun and engaging way, he debunks the myth of 'he made me so mad,' teaching the principle that we are responsible for how we feel. Listeners will learn that they can achieve great things when they accept accountability for their choices.

The Four Agreements offer a powerful code of conduct that can rapidly transform our lives in and out work into a new experience of effectiveness, balance and self behavior.
Everything we do is based on agreements we have made. In these agreements we tell ourselves who we are, what everyone else is, how to act, what is possible and what is impossible. What we have agreed to believe creates what we experience. When these agreements come from fear obstacles develop keeping us from realizing our greatest potential.

Introduction to The Four Agreements by Ruiz:
"Everything we do is based on agreements we have made - agreements with ourselves, with other people, with God, with life. But the most important agreements are the ones we make with ourselves. In these agreements we tell ourselves who we are, how to behave, what is possible, what is impossible. One single agreement is not such a problem, but we have many agreements that come from fear, deplete our energy and diminish our self-worth."

What is man? This lesson continues to examine the nature of man, show that the Bible teaches us that we all have a physical body, a living soul, an eternal spirit and an inner man. The focus of many of these passages remind us that one day we will be resurrected and judged, and we must live our lives knowing that where we spend eternity depends on how I live now, and whether I am obedient to my Lord and Savior.
What did Jesus mean when he promised abundant life? We’ll explore both what that must not mean and what it does mean. This lesson will focus on the present life.

Social & Emotional Dialogue Games provide Resilience and Stress Reduction for...SeriousGamesAssoc
There are few tools to assist people with meaningful interpersonal dialogue and connection which heals and restores the self, relationships, workplace and society. From the most vulnerable to the most heroic among us, millions of people have no one to share or to process their lives and experiences with.
Trance4mation Games has developed and nationally launched first of their kind restorative dialogue games for veteran reintegration, prison reentry, diversity & inclusion, and police officer dialogue. These physical board and card games provide a safe structured space for people to explore, reflect on and share their struggles, feelings, dreams, values and experiences with one another, and to bridge and connect people across all divides and barriers. Designed to promote and facilitate connection, emotional health, resilience, stress reduction, and growth and development, these games makes courageous, authentic, heart to heart dialogue accessible and enjoyable, while bypassing the stigma of speaking on issues one is struggling with. To date, these games have impacted tens of thousands of people’s lives.
This interactive (non-confrontational!) workshop will introduce workshop participants to the Trance4mation Games’ methodology, development process, partnerships, challenges, and lessons from the field. Facilitated and presented by Leslie Robinson, a former Department of Defense Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program Cadre speaker, National Diversity Trainer, and Psychotherapist. Join me for an uplifting experience!

Coming Home To Our True Identity - Charles Razzellrfochler
Charles Razzell contrasts the attitudes and outcomes for two men who encountered God's power: Simon the Sorcerer and Paul the Apostle (Acts chapters 8 & 9). The best possible outcome is when we know who we are in Christ and live accordingly; Jesus being the Vine, and we the branches. In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

4. Brave
We’re “brave” when we are no
longer slaves to fear, but living as
loved daughters and sons of Father
God. !
The mature kind of love that comes
from our Father — displaces fear in
us and in our relationships.
5. Practices for class !
and during your daily life
Remembering to always start with
seeking to Understand the other first
Using “I” statements,
Avoiding “It” statements, Avoiding
“You” statements!
Tactical Breathing
6. “Tactical Breathing” Used by
First Responders and Soldiers
!Breathe in through your nose to the count of 4!
!Hold your breath to the count of 4.!
!Breathe out through your lips to the count of 4.!
!Hold your breath to the count of 4.!
!Repeat until you feel your body and mind relax.
8. Signs I “Need” Brave
Communication
When I hear or have strong emotions!
When I hear or have a problem!
When I hear or have confusion
9. Quick Review:
Seeking first to understand!
The challenge of each person having
their own unique “codebook”.!
Asking: “I’m wondering if….” to
understand whether a difference in our
“codebooks” is the source of our
frustration.
11. Rebuke, Repent, Forgive
From Luke 17: 1-10!
Rebuke??!
Dann Farrelly: “People can’t
change unless we give them good
feedback about how they are
affecting us.“!
We don’t have to be mean. We
can use kind “I” statements.
13. Rebuke, Repent, Forgive
Rebuke?!
Love keeps no record of wrong
when we express “that hurt!” and
can then “move on”.!
Exercise: What would it look like if
in your relationships, you gave
feedback when what someone
said or did felt painful to you?
14. Rebuke, Repent, Forgive
Exercises: !
What would it feel like for you if
people started giving feedback to
you when something you said or
did felt painful to them?!
What if it feel like -if it took you a
while to change your behavior?
15. Rebuke, Repent, Forgive
Discussion: !
What if the issue someone has
with you seems like it’s really their
“brokenness” or a problem with
their interpretation of your
communication/behavior?
16. Feelings:!
The “Dirty Little Secret” of
Communication!
!
Why?!
Did you grow up believing that it
would be much better to
disconnect from feelings when
trying to communicate?
18. Feelings are an important part of us,
and they are tempered by the other
aspects of who we are.!
Main ones: Glad, Sad, Mad, and E-gad
(scared). Also disgust, hopeless despair.!
Say (acknowledge) the painful ones
(frustrated, angry, scared, etc.!
Display the positive ones (joyful, happy,
etc.)

Empathy - Brene Brown
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Evwgu369Jw
20. Empathy - To Feel “With”
It’s almost impossible to
communicate empathy if we don’t
allow ourselves to feel our own
emotions.!
Exercise: Has you recently
experienced “empathy” from
someone else? Did that help?
How? Pair-up and share this.
25. Feelings - Hidden Agendas and
Energy Management
Any time we hide a significant feeling
from someone, we create a hidden
agenda and cut-off growth and
communication with them in that
area.!
It takes as much or more energy to
hide/deny a feeling/judgment as it
does to work through the matter
26. Feelings and Curiosity
“The opposite of recognizing that
we’re feeling something is denying
our emotions. The opposite of
being curious is disengaging.
When we deny our stories and
disengage from tough emotions,
they don’t go away; instead, they
own us, they define us.
27. Feelings and Curiosity
Our job is not to deny our story but
to defy the ending—to rise strong,
recognize our story and rumble
with the truth until we get to a place
where we stay: Yes. This is what
happened. This is my truth. And I
will choose how this story ends.”
Brene Brown “Rising Strong” pg 50
28. Reckoning with Our Emotions
Selected readings from Brene

Ways we “off-load” hurt!
Strategies for Reckoning
29. Exercises - Groups of 2
What was the norm for
acknowledging emotions in the
family you grew up with?!
Today are you generally aware and
curious about what you are feeling
(emotions and body sensations)?
Or is this something you’d like to
explore?
30. Exercises - Groups of 2
Ways people “Off Load” hurt feelings:
“Chandliering”, “Bouncing Hurt”,
“Numbing Hurt”, and “Stockpiling
Hurt”.!
Do you see yourself doing any of
these? Describe how that works for
you - and some of the effects this has
had on your life and relationships.
31. Exercises - Groups of 2
Ways to give our emotional life
more freedom and awareness:
“Permission Slips” and Mindfulness.!
