ANTARTICA ANIMALS Alex Frey & Brady Egan
Adelie penguin Hatching occurs after about 35 days. The chicks are brooded closely by their parents for the first two to three weeks. Population: 2.5 million pairs Location: Antarctic region Size: About 30 inches tall Weight: 11 pounds Diet: Fish, krill, & other small crustaceans Nests: Circle mounds of small stones & pebbles
Salmon shark There are not a lot of sharks in Antarctica. The only shark that has really been studied a lot is the salmon shark. The salmon shark has many rows of teeth and a huge jaw. The salmon shark can be brown and white or it can be brownish Gray. The salmon shark can grow longer than eleven feet.
Fish in Antarctica There are many different types of fish in Antarctica which you can find very interesting. The ice fish is interesting because it has antifreeze which keeps it's body from freezing. There is another fish called cod. It is very big and can grow to the average size of 18-39 inches. The cod weighs up to 10-11 pounds and migrates usually to the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The cod has antifreeze which keeps it from freezing.
Seals Not every animal can stand the freezing cold water of the Antarctic, but the seals of Antarctica can because of its 2-4 inches of thick blubber. They stay by shore and live close to packs of ice. The pups are even born on ice during April or May. Even though they live in water they still can't stay under water for their whole lifetime, so they come up out of water every 2 minutes. The seals of Antarctica look like a manatee but they have a big snout. Its size is a little smaller than a dolphin. The seals can be gray, brown, or black. That’s a fur sea
Birds The Arctic Tern is an amazing bird that has amazing ways to live. For example, they double their weight in summer time. They hunt and eat things twice their size. The Arctic Tern has a black head and a white body. It has a wing span of about 4 feet. The body itself is about 5 feet. The camouflage is pretty good in the Antarctic for the Arctic Tern because it blends in with the clouds or falling snow from the sky.
Whale These are the type of whales in Antarctica Blue, killer, sperm, humpback The whales of Antarctica have a lot of things in common. They all go to Antarctica because of the food source. They are all hunted, usually for perfume and for making bags. They eat krill, fish, squid, and some even eat plankton (krill). They also all migrate to different oceans. No whale stays in Antarctica all year round.
