Antarctica is the fifth largest continent, surrounded by the South Pole in a circular shape with the Antarctic Peninsula extending toward South America. It is covered by a thick ice sheet up to 6.5 miles deep in places. Antarctica supports a variety of wildlife including several species of penguins such as Adelie, Emperor, and Rockhopper penguins, seals such as Weddell and elephant seals, and other animals like orcas and albatrosses. One threat to the Antarctic habitat is potential future exploitation of oil and mineral resources that could increase pollution and human occupation in the region.
