Solar energy is the primary energy source for plant life on Earth. Photosynthesis captures light energy through carbon dioxide fixation, transforming light energy into stable carbohydrates that provide energy for all organisms. Plants use chloroplasts to capture photons during photosynthesis, and mitochondria to release energy during respiration through oxygen, carbon dioxide, water and ATP production. Plants photosynthesize during the day to produce oxygen and fix carbon, while at night they respire and consume oxygen.
