Nanobionic plants emit a dim glow for several hours by embedding nanoparticles into leaves. The technology could transform trees into self-powered streetlights. The vision is to create a desk lamp plant that does not need to be plugged in, with light ultimately powered by the plant's energy metabolism. The main component is luciferase, an enzyme from fireflies that provides their glow. Researchers have envisioned using these light-emitting plants to provide low-intensity indoor lighting or replace streetlights, reducing energy consumption and pollution from artificial lights.

2. An independent energy sources, now are the plants itself. Nanoparticles are embedded
into the leaves of watercress plant that cause to give of a dim glow for 3 and half hours.
Creating the plants bright enough to illuminate a work space but if successful the technology
could also be used to transform trees into self powered street lights. Basically the plants
replace many of the functions currently performed by electrical devices and appliances. The
vision is to make a plant that will function as desk lamp you won't have to plug in . The light
is ultimately powered by the energy metabolism of the plant itself. The main component of
the luminous plants is luciferace the class of oxidative enzymes that gives fireflies signature
glow.

5. Purpose and Possible Effect on Society!
Purpose: Creating a plant that can emit enough light to replace that of
lamp posts in cities. Also bring light to areas around the globe that do
not have electricity to help them see in the dark.
Hypothetical effects on the society: Reduction of use of electricity in
environments to create light to see on the streets or in a backyard. Most
lights are manufactured by power plants to create the metal molds,
glass, wires, etc… which all release harmful pollutants. With this new
concept people can enjoy a natural development of light within their
community. Also stress is created by high frequencies of light ( bright,
blinding, temporary blindness), the colors used would be blue, green,
red, and other colors that are less blinding, but emit enough light to see
the surroundings well enough.
Targeted goals: Creating natural form of light, reduce pollution emitted
to make artificial forms of light.
6. The Future of Nanobionic Plants
● Researchers have envisioned that nanobionic plants with light-
emitting properties could be used to light indoor areas at low-
intensity and can transform trees into self-powered streetlights.
● The cumulative effect of self-repairing plants enable them to
produce their own energy and be adaptable to the outer
environment. This widens the potential for plant nanobionics.
Professor Strano stated that their discovery could have a positive
effect on saving energy, as 20% of the world’s energy consumption
is directed towards lighting.
