Borescope?
Borescope is an optical system consists of a rigid or flexible tube with an
eyepiece or display on one end,an objective lens or camera on the other end
.Borescopre are commonly used for the visual inspection where the area is in
accessable or accessability required destructive.
There are two types of borescope
Rigid Borescope: Rigid borescope have limited access towhat is to be viewed
must in a straight line. It is generally used in inspection of automotive cylinder,
fuel injectors, hydraulic manifold bodies and gun smithing.
Flexible Borescope: A flexible borescope is not rigid. It links the camera to the
eyepiece on one end. A flexible borescope can be used to take image of curvy
pipes ducts vents even chimney.

Borescope in Automotive Engineering
The applications of borescopes in the automotive engineering are
very diverse:
For the model and vehicle construction, creation of bodyworks, engines and
gears and as well for the future maintenance and care in daily use of the vehicles,
motorsport or maintenance of vintage cars. The visual control of welds, cracks,
voids without disassembly is made possible. In automotive workshops the bores-
cope is mostly used for detection of the wear and tear damage. The detection of
the smallest mistakes or impending problems can help to avoid serious traffic
accidents.
Application
The following areas in the automotive inspection are checked with extra attention:
Cylinder, pistons, timing chain
Turbocharger
Powertrain, gearbox
With the help of borescope and the inner and hollow spaces and inspected and
possible defects are coated with wax to protect from corrosion.
Borescope
Inspection in Aviation
The visual inspection of components, especially of the drives (gas turbines) with an
borescope is a very important part of the function test. Dozens of thousands of
aircraft operations in transportation of the passengers as well as in the field of trans-
portation of goods require one hundred percent availability. Periodic inspections are
essential. Primarily, the gas turbine must be checked. In this connection endoscopes
of different types (rigid, flexible) with different levels of image resolutions for recogni-
tion of hairline cracks in the critical parts can be used.
During the inspection of turbines (impeller, compressor stages, combustion chamber,
turbine set and nozzle)e.g. a large number of blades (parts loosened by the birds hits)
should be analyzed. If the turbine disks (blisks) are examined when, representing a
turning of the gas turbine.
Normal state requires an endoscopic inspection rotating the turbine shaft in order to
check all sites and parts.
In addition to the visual inspection of gas turbines, the inspection of turboprop engines
(especially in the military field) and propeller engines also plays a very important role in
aviation. In propeller engines (usually these are piston-driven internal combustion
engines) pistons, valves, gear units are tested by means of endoscopes. Since the
mechanical use of that type of airplanes is not as high as in jet engines and the drive
concept is similar to a car drive, the inspection corresponds mostly to the automotive
engine.

power plants, coal power plants and in many countries nuclear power plants must be

It is recommended by a variety of manufacturers for applications as diverse as space-
craft hydraulic tubing inspection to an Ultraviolet Crack Inspection on a wing.
Borescopes are approved on jet engine inspection kits for the T700, T56, and CFM56.

Inspection in Building Industry
The application purposes in this industrial and commercial sector consist
mostly in the detection of:
-Damage caused by the climatic and biological influences (corrosion, cracking
and mold)
-Documentation of repairs and renovations.
-Damage of supply and disposal technique (oil, gas, water and sewage).
The assessment of the ventilation systems, air ducts and conditioning systems in
private and commercial area is also of a very big importance. Very dirty and
because of that hygienically questionable equipment represent a serious health

Weld inspection of sanitary tubing in Pharmaceutical Plants is a Government
requirement.
Pumps and valves must be inspected in Chemical Plants to maintain proper opera-
tion.
Bearing and gear wear is a common application.
Engine Inspection
Engine Inspection is a very typical and practical borescope application.
These products inspect every type of engine from a motorcycle to the jet
engines of a 747.
Virtually any engine can and does benefit from periodic borescope inspection.
Large diesel and natural gas engines are routinely examined as part of their
planned maintenance.
Auto engines are viewed to find bad valves, scoring of the cylinder wall,
cracked pistons, bad head gaskets and valve deposits.

Borescope Inspection in Building Industry The application purposes in this industrial and commercial sector consist mostly in the detection of: -Damage caused by the climatic and biological influences (corrosion, cracking and mold) -Documentation of repairs and renovations. -Damage of supply and disposal technique (oil, gas, water and sewage). The assessment of the ventilation systems, air ducts and conditioning systems in private and commercial area is also of a very big importance. Transmission valve bodies are viewed looking for burrs and other debris. Valve deposits are easily diagnosed. Tubing and pipe inspection for defective welds and corrosion. Weld inspection of sanitary tubing in Pharmaceutical Plants is a Government requirement. Pumps and valves must be inspected in Chemical Plants to maintain proper opera- tion. Bearing and gear wear is a common application.
  • 15. Engine Inspection Engine Inspection is a very typical and practical borescope application. These products inspect every type of engine from a motorcycle to the jet engines of a 747. Virtually any engine can and does benefit from periodic borescope inspection. Large diesel and natural gas engines are routinely examined as part of their planned maintenance. Auto engines are viewed to find bad valves, scoring of the cylinder wall, cracked pistons, bad head gaskets and valve deposits. Turbines, both aviation and land based units, benefit from a borescope inspec- tion schedule looking for foreign objects, cracks, and signs of over heating.
